Do you guys ever "research" into bans? Like say someone said something, then later on appologized or backpeddled do you take that into account? Or do you just wildly slam the banhammer around?
Without knowing the exact moderation practices (group modding), how can you say this for sure? Just because it doesn't openly influence you, doesn't mean it doesn't subconsciously influence your decision. Seeing 5 posters call for a ban might certainly help that tiny little nagging feeling in the back of your head whether it's just quite over the line or not.
Eh I don't know about that. Government places require you to hand over your facebook.Just because the internet gets treated as public property in casual usage doesn't actually make it public, else Facebook would be the digital commons
HAHA Glad I'm not the only one who thought that.Ya'll gon' make me lose mah mind

Bish doesn't follow my policies ;b
More accurately, he has some autonomy to do things like this when things get dire.
Well, I can only speak for myself but usually I am either reading the topic, in which case, yes, I'll most likely see what you're talking about or it was reported to me, in which case I'll read the conversation leading up to the post and afterwards, in which case I'll probably see what you're talking about.
Though it's always possible that I miss something, yes.
I can't really know whether something affects me subconsciously, after all, so no comment on that.
But I am aware of the possibility of being wrong or overreacting to a post or even, yes, just being misled by whining, and I am more than solicitous of other moderators' opinions as a result. For instance, there was one topic where nothing in particular was way over the line, but the entire tone of the topic was infuriating and had me seeing red. I knew I wasn't really the right person to actually moderate that topic, so I asked another moderator to look at it instead.

Ugh, no not my curiosity. Now I have to know what it was!
So Bish is basically Judge Dredd.

This is fine and all; I get Gaf isn't a democracy when it comes to moderation policies, but posters have a point here. Why give such contradictory messages with what happened here today?
Placing 2 soon to be graveyard threads in the 2nd most visible spot on the entire forum with a final message of "Pray to whatever deities you prefer" most certainly seems like a spectacle to me.
He's known for his unpredictability in my mind, so the fact that even you can't really see what's coming with him makes it all the better. :lolBish doesn't follow my policies ;b

I don't know, I just consider if you've posted something on the internet somewhere, it's public. You can't take it back, and everyone can see it.
Possibly not forever, but personal attacks are frowned upon.
You can do that as well. Have it so only the poster sees their own posts and noone else does. That way they will slowly go insane. They just enter another dimension never to be seen or heard from again.

Unless you're Devolution.
I seem to remember a forum, where banned users didn't know they were banned and continued posting happily, but no one could see their posts.
Hellbanning is a practice used by some online community managers for protecting a community against Internet trolls. The practice involves making a user invisible to all other users. From the hellbanned user's perspective, however, they seem to be participating normally in the community. The purpose of hellbanning is to make it impossible for other users to respond to a particular user by rendering their contributions invisible and thereby enforcing the community best practice of "not feeding trolls".
Hellbanning is sometimes also called "Coventry" or "ghost posting" or "shadowbanning".

Here is a good example of a ban sheet for reference:

THANKS A LOT SENTRY....
More like GAF's Hulk.So Bish is basically Judge Dredd.
What? I've been there since 2007, what? Anyone who's being racist gets banned lickity split. For the record, I agree with you about the idea of a ban record as a warning to other posters, but you picked a terrible site to reference. SA is a horrible site of racists and genuinely terrible people as moderators who operate under personal vendettas. Like Reddit/4chan/that style of site, there's good and bad subforums, and man, there's a lot of bad there.
As for the hellbanning idea, it's been dropped by all the sites that used it as it has the aforementioned flaws.
Perhaps linking to the post with a tag "REPEAT OFFENSIVE JOKES ABOUT SENSITIVE SUBJECTS" or "REPEATEDLY MADE SAME UNFUNNY COMMENT OVER MANY THREADS" would illustrate what posts can be tipping points.
Also I've decided the comments should be in caps because they convey a sense of power.

The more transparency, the more people will start threads arguing about bans. It's more efficient for everybody to constantly live in fear, not knowing where among them the Bish will strike next.
Basically, GAF posters are a superstitious, cowardly lot.

I'm hoping it's all tongue-in-cheek, or else I'll be disappointed. I hope we're for the most part of above begging to the mods "PLEASE BAN THIS USER YOU WILL HAVE MY ETERNAL LOVE morseo than you already do", especially since we have a perfectly fine ignore feature if you can't stand their presence.

Unless you're Devolution.
This thread has gone on for 83 pages. Mission accomplished.
I heard that if you engrave Elebreth in the sand the great Bish will be unable to swing his mighty banhammer for twelve hours. Of course, he can still hit you with his ranged lawnmower, but it's something.
Yeah, because it's a thread in which the mods came in (like fifty pages ago) to offer some transparency about the process.
Hypothesis confirmed!
Don't get me wrong
Asking for us is great holding Grudges and dropping names when no one is doing no wrong not so great
Do we have a final body count on today's this weekend's double graveyard? Any perms?
