Recently, we've heard a lot of discourse about whether game pass is profitable and I heard a response being that it is still in the customer acquisition phase. This premise seems dubious to me, but what does gaf think?

Edit from jm89:
Here's the timeline of what we know of the sub numbers.

Early - Mid 2022: 25 million gamepass + 11 million gold
Feb 2024: 34 million gamepass subs(combined with gold)
Early - Mid 2025: Ms employee linked in profile saying they had 35+ million subs

If that MS employees gamepass numbers are somewhat up-to-date and not too far off then the subs haven't grown since 2022.

MS is a specialist of hiding and spoofing numbers when they are not good... and since we do not hear any official number related to Gamepass since I don't even know when... no, these numbers are NOT good.

Based on the latest numbers we have and factoring in the Gold rebranding, overall subscribers has declined slightly.

It's been flatlined for a couple of years prior to even the CMA/FTC cases, straight from Ozempic Phil's mouth. 'Strictly confidential' until Microsoft's own lawyers uploaded it online 🫢

The only 'growth' they have had was when they converted their Gold users to Game Pass Core however even then I'm sure the overall number had declined by a million or 2.

If the numbers were good they would have made them public already.

MS don't report anything accurately surrounding Xbox - we can only imagine this is because the numbers would be alarming if shared publicly.

To the best of public knowledge, the majority of GP subs - perhaps as high as 90% - are through Xbox consoles.

GP subs are predominantly on console and the console sales aren't growing - in fact they're declining. Cliff edge would be a reasonable way to describe Xbox sales drop now. It didn't sell that well at it's peak either.

So, basically no, GP isn't growing new subscribers in any meaningful way because sales of the console aren't growing.

PC is where MS may hope for growth - but it won't grow there in any significant way. GP is redundant on PC.

No matter how much some cope, Xbox wouldn't be going 3rd party if it was all sunshine and roses over in gamepass land.
There are literally one or 2 members here who you could say "cope"

There aren't many Xbox posters here and most left are very aware and also ok with what's happening.

I enjoy GamePass and playing some games on my Series X. If Xbox disappeared overnight I'd just get a PC or PS5 no Biggie. We don't buy games on the green side so have no worries about losing libraries ;)

Senior Business Manager says over 30mil, most likely dropped a ton of subs.

Goes up when a big release comes out, then peters out for a while until the next big release. Rinse and repeat.

adamsapple keeps making new accounts and buying game pass so I say it is increasing.
I wish he would start gifting us all game pass subs the way that Marston gives out GAF Gold.

CMON adamsapple adamsapple !

My friend Tommy recently bought 3 months of game pass, so consider that a +1.

Its gaining and losing subscribers who do this:

The number of head-shots, distance traveled or enemies killed isn't even high enough to report anymore.
Yeah that's true! What happened with that trend of devs sharing dumb metrics about the stuff players do in the game? Been quite a while since I saw one of those.

I resubbed a few months ago and even left recurring billing turned on for the first time. I think they're finally cooking. Might be too late, but the value is finally there in spades. I would like a written apology from every gaffer who gassed up that Indiana Jones game though. Fucker stinks worse than Avowed. Maybe even Immortals of Avenum. But there's some good stuff on there. Got WRC loaded up right now, and I'm kinda fiddling with Avowed. Still remains to be seen if I'll stick with it. Honestly not looking good on that front, but I haven't uninstalled it yet!

I believe Game Pass was reasonably successful on PC? With that being one of the million reasons they're going to focus on that platform more.

Nope. We'd have heard about that otherwise.
  • They stopped sharing numbers at 25 million subscribers.
  • They lost ~2 million subscribers after that.
  • Then they merged ~11 million XBLG with Game Pass and revealed 34 million subscribers.
  • They shut up again.
There is no growth whatsoever.

I feel like whatever numbers they would release are meaningless. I mean I've gotten about a year of Gamepass out of $1 subs in the past and a few 'free' 3 month subscriptions via some piece of hardware I may have purchased. I would probably be dumped into the pool with people who subscribe all year around or do the churn thing. The amount of people who are actually pumping money into it month around, year around, probably isn't high enough for Microsoft to openly express, so they don't.

Console sales have flattened so the growth isn't there on that front. And personally, as a mostly PC player now I'd rather just go onto a Steam key reseller site and buy the games I want dirt cheap than pump money into a recurring subscription. That model may work better on a closed platform where the customer's options are more limited, but that platform first and foremost needs to be desirable on a mass scale and MS has fallen on their face with the Series consoles.
