Ideally no, as by the time a dev copies or traces a trend, a new or better one is already being created or worked on, so you're naturally behind. It would typically have that " oh this game is good, but 'x' game did it first and is better.
However, I think their can be some rare exceptions. While I really did enjoy the latest two mainline zelda games, I actually preferred immortals fenyx rising over them. And while that game is awesome, it CLEARLY mimics what BoTW did before it.
