Is Kingdom Hearts really all that confusing?

Well, then you should read the Duckroll thread and freshen yourself up. This isn't some hotshot group that sprung out of nowhere. Being based on Osaka has little to do with it - rather, they seem to have been THE KH team since KH2, which is a tad longer than 'nowadays'.

Okay, so I noticed your edit only now. While yeah, they've been developing KH games since ReCoM, they were kind of the "sidestory" developer who weren't going to be given an actual mainline release. While BBS is important and, really, no lesser than KH or KHII, Nomura still didn't consider them as the actual KH team, just a team he could get to develop these other KH projects while KH Team was busy with Versus XIII.

It's kind of like how Tabata was originally "just" a handheld/spin-off FF director, but has now been lifted to the big league with co-directing a mainline FF. Much in the same way Osaka team "only" developed handheld titles, but have been deemed to know what they are doing with the KH series and have now been put on an actual mainline release. And, like I said, Nomura himself has only said within the last year or so how he considers the Osaka team as the KH team _nowadays_

There are two types of people on the planet: those who think Nomura is a genius and then there is the rest of us.

The ability to skip cutscenes is essential.

:-)

Bleh, that's so untrue that you should be embarrassed of making such false statements. Last I checked, like, 80% of the stories of the last few games were basically about going through Disney storylines, with the remaining 20% being spread out to the beginnings & endings of each world + the last world with no Disney.

Just look at the character art as shown in this post.

Look at the introduction of new characters, especially Organization 13- it's just like any typical anime plot!

The Disney aspects are being condensed and pushed aside more and more with every game. Even the Final Fantasy elements become more obscured by all the 'your heart is a light in the darkness that you need to find friendship light heart dark light heart dark dark.' monologues you have to grind through with each cut scene. Even the game itself seems to be less and less interactive with each installment. I remember forgetting all the controls for KH2 but it's okay because you just need to push triangle and watch all the pretty colours. Dream Drop Distance went so far as to give you a cycling list of 'special moves' that just fill the screen with particle effects and weird rainbows until you win.

I bet the next game will have Sora power up like Goku only to transform like Sailor Moon.

Don't get me wrong, I adore the series and think it's one of the most appealing things to come out of the games industry- but it seems to be becoming more and more unoriginal and safe with each new release.

Why do I need to look at character art? The characters grow up and wear smaller shoes, big deal. Ansem in KH1 didn't have huge shoes... >_> And Sora still has big shoes, only Riku doesn't

It's still a fact that a majority of every KH games story STILL consists of going through Disney worlds which have Disney characters going through the storyline of their respective Disney movies. And with games like BBS, those events have a clear effect on the main characters. The Princesses of Heart aren't part of the main villains masterplan, that's pretty much the only major difference from KH1. Still, based on DDD, it seems like KHIII might bring them back in some capacity.

Look at the introduction of new characters, especially Organization 13- it's just like any typical anime plot!
And this differs from the first game... how? It was just as "anime", Sora is just like any Naruto or other shonen heroes.

And I'd hardly call the way Org XIII tries to manipulate Sora in different ways (Namine + Riku replica in CoM, Xion in Days, helping them without even knowing in II) as super typical anime.

Everyone just calm down, take a deep breath and read this google doc.

What in the fuck am I reading? This is Kingdom Hearts? Man, I only played the first one lol.

Welp, can't say I didn't try!
Now you're just getting ridiculous. The shoe size of ONE character is hardly of any kind of representation of how much Disney is or isn't a part of KH nowadays. Why not actually try to respond with some reasonable arguments?

Only played KH2 and plan on getting KH3. Not even gonna pretend to know what the fuck is going on. I just wanna fight shit with Donald and Goofy and visit Disney worlds.

It's not just the shoe size dude. The entire character has been redesigned.

The story isn't confusing, just poorly written and frankly, stupid. KH is of fanfic-level tier that incites even worse fanfics.

Yes, because he GROWS UP. Anyway, your argument is that the series has less Disney with each passing game and you have absolutely nothing to base that argument on, except one character's character design changing. Just because a character grows up and looks a bit different means jack shit in the bigger picture. A majority of the games' worlds are still Disney and have more or less impact on either the story or the main characters (or both) of the games.

I watched the Gametrailers retrospective, and I have some questions on rules of the Kingdom Hearts universe. I never played 358 or DDD, so sorry if these are dumb.

So there should be 7 light keyblade wielders and 13 dark keyblade wielders, I take it?

Who are the 7 light holders? Riku, Kairi, Mickey, Lea, Ventus, ?, ?

Who are the 13 dark holders? Resurrected Master Xehanort, Venitus, ...?

If Org 13 was meant to be the dark wielders, why don't they have keyblades? Even Roxas only used Sora/Riku's.

One keyblade can obviously take multiple forms. Can it be in multiple instances simultaneously? i.e. can Riku and Sora both wield Riku's blade? Are Aqua and Terra both keyblade-less now?

Was Venitas given a keyblade by Master Xehanort? Does he just have all 13 dark ones in his pockets?

What other techniques are there for gaining a keyblade? Sora got Riku's through purity of heart; did he "steal" Riku's or conjure up a new one? If the latter, is this one of the 7 or a new keyblade altogether?

Are these 20 keyblades all parts of the X blade?

What happened to all the keyblades that belonged to masters fighting in the Keyblade War? Were these just not passed on, thus only the X-derived keyblades remain?

Does the 20 keyblades rule hold over time travel? What are the implications of 12 new keyblade-wielding Xehanorts showing up? Do they all just share Xehanort prime's keyblade?

What are the various techniques of opening Kingdom Hearts? So far, we've seen:
1) single keyblade (KH1)
2) princesses of heart (KH2)
3) use the X-blade, which can be created with clash of 1 light/1 dark keyblade wielder (BBS)

What stops Master Xehanort from using techniques 1 or 3 again? Why does he need to have 20 keyblade wielders clash this time?

Was Venitus a heartless? If so, did Ventus become a nobody when Venitus was split, or is the Venitus/Ventus split a unique thing?

Are the powers of Namine the result of a rule, or is she just a unique instantiation that's unjustified?

Okay here we go. Quite a few spoilers ahead so skip this post if you don't want to be spoiled.

So there should be 7 light keyblade wielders and 13 dark keyblade wielders, I take it?

Not exactly. There's seven warriors of light whom posses keyblades. The 13 Seekers of Darkness don't all wield key blades but some of them do. It's not a requirement to have a Keyblade to be one of the 13 darknesses.

Who are the 7 light holders? Riku, Kairi, Mickey, Lea, Ventus, ?, ?

This is something fans are trying to find out too. It's been made vague on purpose. It's supposed to promote discussion on the topic. My theory is that Sora, Riku, Kairi, Mickey, Aqua, Ventus and Lea are the 7 Wielders of Light.

Who are the 13 dark holders? Resurrected Master Xehanort, Venitus, ...?

This is also not been mentioned probably because they want to roll out these 13 bosses throughout KH3. But so far we know that: Xehanort, Young Xehanort, Ansem(Seeker of Darkness), Xemnas, Braig and Isa are all part of the "new" Organization XIII and part of the 13 Seekers of Darkness.

If Org 13 was meant to be the dark wielders, why don't they have keyblades? Even Roxas only used Sora/Riku's.

Explained above.

One keyblade can obviously take multiple forms. Can it be in multiple instances simultaneously? i.e. can Riku and Sora both wield Riku's blade? Are Aqua and Terra both keyblade-less now?

Are you asking if Sora and Riku can hold the same Keyblade at the same time in different areas? If that's what your asking then no. Sora can use Rikus Keyblade and vice-versa but there can't be two Kingdom Key(blade)s being used. Each Keyblade is unique. They can't be magicked into being in two places at once.

As for Aqua and Terra. They still have their keyblades. Just because they both performed the rite of succession on Riku and Kairi doesn't mean they can't still wield their Keyblades. If that was the case then Master Eraqus and Xehanort wouldn't have their keyblades.

Was Venitas given a keyblade by Master Xehanort? Does he just have all 13 dark ones in his pockets?

One would assume. Usually one has to have the rite of succession performed in order to obtain a Keyblade. This is why Sora is so "special" because he obtained a Keyblade without the ceremony ever performed on him.

What other techniques are there for gaining a keyblade? Sora got Riku's through purity of heart; did he "steal" Riku's or conjure up a new one? If the latter, is this one of the 7 or a new keyblade altogether?

The Keyblade Sora has can lock and unlock any door or chest. Lame I know but it explains why you can open up everything in the game. ;)

Every Keyblade is special with what it does.

He didn't steal the Keyblade per-say. The Keyblade sensed the darkness in Riku's heart and moved to the nearest pure heart which at that point in the story was Sora. At that point Sora became the (that particular) Keyblade's master.

Everyone has a unique Keyblade. The Keyblade doesn't make a wielder one of the 7 lights. It just lets them fulfill the basic requirement of being one of the 7 lights.

Are these 20 keyblades all parts of the X blade?

I think you are placing too much importance on the Keyblades each wielder holds. It's when an equal strength of Darkness and Light clash is when the X-Blade is forged.

What happened to all the keyblades that belonged to masters fighting in the Keyblade War? Were these just not passed on, thus only the X-derived keyblades remain?

They are all in the Keyblade Graveyard. And if you have your own Keyblade why would you want to pick up an old Keyblade when you have a perfectly good one?

There are no X-blade derived Keyblades. I don't know where you read or thought that but that's not a thing.

Does the 20 keyblades rule hold over time travel? What are the implications of 12 new keyblade-wielding Xehanorts showing up? Do they all just share Xehanort prime's keyblade?

Like I said before your placing too much emphasis on the Keyblades. Keyblades are just very useful weapons within the world of Kingdom Hearts. Beyond that they hold very little importance. Now the X-blade can unlock and open Kingdom Hearts. That's why such great emphasis is on that particular weapon. Plus it packs a punch and looks awesome.

What are the various techniques of opening Kingdom Hearts? So far, we've seen:
1) single keyblade (KH1)
2) princesses of heart (KH2)
3) use the X-blade, which can be created with clash of 1 light/1 dark keyblade wielder (BBS)

All ended in failure and some of them are "fake" versions of Kingdom Hearts. We haven't actually seen Kingdom Hearts yet. So we assume that the proper method hasn't been found but this new plan that Xehanort has made might actually open Kingdom Hearts this time. Guess we'll find out in KH3.

What stops Master Xehanort from using techniques 1 or 3 again? Why does he need to have 20 keyblade wielders clash this time?

Because the other times it wasn't the "real" Kingdom Hearts or it ended in failure. Again it's not 20 Keyblade wielders. It's 7 lights, 13 darknesses.

Was Venitus a heartless? If so, did Ventus become a nobody when Venitus was split, or is the Venitus/Ventus split a unique thing?

Ven was never a heartless nor did he ever produce one. Xehanort took the darkness from Ven's heart and gave it form in the form of Vanitus. This weakened Ven and is why when Sora's heart on its way to being born saw Ven's fractured heart and merged with it for a while so Ven could recover. When Ven recovered Sora's heart went on to be born inside Sora. This is why Vanitus looks like an evil Sora. It's also the reason why Ven's heart when it was fractured again at the end of BbS was able to find Sora's heart when he was little and took refuge within Sora and is also the reason why Sora's nobody Roxas looks like Ven.

So in short, it was a unique... experiment done by Xehanort on his pupil.

Are the powers of Namine the result of a rule, or is she just a unique instantiation that's unjustified?

Namine can affect Sora's memories because she is the nobody of a Princess of Light (Kairi) and thus has special abilities not usually shown from a nobody and because of Kairi's special connection to Sora and because she cares about Sora so much Namine has the ability to alter Sora's memories.

Whew. I hope that helped answer some of your questions.

Kingdom Hearts is pretty much the Game of Thrones of gaming.

What the fuck i am reading.

Game of Thrones is logical and not confusing to people who actually read book or watched actually whole seasons one after another.

Kingdom Hearts story after 1 is just one big mess which points that story writer just mashed up some concepts and connected dots making up stuff on the go. KH story can be explained but actual story itself is one big mess for non other reason than just to fuck things up and make people believe story is so awesome that people can't even grasp it fully vide original Evangelion ending (which made people nuts how Nietzhe it is) where in reality they simply didn't have money for last EP.

I love KH games for it's gameplay and characters and humor but characters reasoning and actual story is cringeworthy material.

It's not confusing really. If you followed the games, it'll make sense to you. It just became ridiculous and stupid to the point of parody.

It doesn't and we're talking about a series that spans multiple games, with multiple perspectives from multiple characters.

...who are sometimes the same characters, clones of other characters, dreams of other characters, alternate-timeline version of other characters.

The biggest problem with KH is the same of many other works in many different media: in order to explain characters and concepts created without the necessary forethought, they add even more characters and concepts, also created without the necessary forethought, with then need their own explaining later. Then stuff starts piling up and eventually someone needs to resort to time travel or alternate realities.

I used to love this kind of shit when I was a teenager, but after a few years I can't get past the ridicule anymore.

I used to love this kind of shit when I was a teenager, but after a few years I can't get past the ridicule anymore.

Because it is most of the time result of shitty writing than actual planned plot. Something doesn't add up ? Make alternate reality or time-travel

It's only confusing to people who didn't play

chain of memories
birth by sleep
dream drop distance

I'd say most of the story is told within these three games that goes a long way to filling in any blanks.

After finishing dream drop distance I felt completely up to date with the story and from here on there isn't much that hasn't been explained.

Sucks for those that think it's too complicated as i'm super pumped for KH3!

Xblade. Wasn't that some shitty action game with a protag that wearing a thong?

KH series isn't really too confusing, but having to own almost every console of the last 2 gens to 'get it' kinda sucks.

From my personal experience, I love the details and quirks the story has..Its pretty complex and gives you something to think about as you play through. Nothing bad about that at all. I also enjoyed KH2's story the most cuz of the larger cast and branching story line.

I am pissed at the handheld sequels being spread over too many consoles, though. But really the story is a lot of fun.

Its worth noting that I haven't played 3D...That's the one that seems controversial I guess.

The plot reads like it was written by a collective of mentally ill people. It is just absolute terrible nonsense at this point and fairly embarrassing.

I used to find it part of the charm, but after trying to read whatever the fuck happened in Dream Drop Distance, its gone out the other side of "so bad its good" and just evokes disgust from me.
