Is Metal Slug X on PS1 excellent?

It's alright, some loading times between stages. Missing some frames of animation too, but overall I thought it was a decent port

Don't they have Metal Slug 3 for Xbox?

Yes. And 4 & 5 are coming in one set in about a month. For PS2 as well. I think those are the two.

As much as I like Alien Hominid, it's not as good.

it's fine. obviously the animation is cut, but the gameplay is entirely intact, and the loading isn't intrusive. i'd rather have a compromised port of metal slug x than accurate versions of 4 or 5, but that's me.

Well, I'm no expert, just in love with the series (rather late). It seems that 3 is the high point to all pertinent parties. I'll have to pick up X given the circumstances. I just picked up the GBA game and it's a little quirky so far but fun.

3 is probably the best, yeah, but the original and X are right up there. 4 and 5 weren't handled by the original developers, and they're not of the same quality. though i'll still pick up the compilation when it comes out.

i played the crap out of x on ps1 before i got the mvs cart. it's really a strong port given the hardware, and a huge improvement on the ps1 version of metal slug 1, which actually does have intrusive mid-level loading.

Didn't the PS version of X also have mid-level loading? It's been a long time since I played it (sold it a couple years ago) so I may have confused it with 1.

Musashi, have you played the Neo Geo Pocket Metal Slugs? Very fun games (particularly the second one).

i haven't played it in a while either. if it had mid-level loads, they were brief ones at natural transition points.

well, in any case, it isn't like the ps1 version of metal slug 1, which would pause to load in the middle of the action.

Metal Slug 3 is the best imo, but what the shit, you can't continue on the Xbox version

Yeah, that soured me too. I mean the level design in 3 raped the first two (imo), but the continue issue really was a downer.

I have, they were good. It's why I took a chance with the GBA one which is a lot of fun, but strange as it has some platforming/collection aspects that make it seem a bit different. I just love 3 so much, such great attention to detail, that I just want more and more of the same. Unfortunately, I guess that's the peak experience of the series.

I'm thinking of picking up Contra:SS because I only played it briefly a while ago and I'm more up to the challenge now. Still, their seem very different games. Any other series big with Metal Slug fans?

My advice, as an ultimate side scrolling shooter fan :
Metal Slug (any of them)
Contra Shattered Soldier (very good)
Alien Hominid (quick fun, but something's holding it back)
And you need a Genesis with the holy trilogy of goodness :
Gunstar Heroes (no brainer)
Contra : Hard Corps (probably the best in the Contra serie)
Adventures Of Batman And Robin (VERY underrated title, probably my favorite of all time)

Contra: SS get! I do indeed have Astro Boy: Omega, it's fan-frickin'-tastic.

Gunstar Heroes is indeed a no brainer and one of the greatest games ever. Your good taste dictates that I go out and get Hard Corps and Batman asap.

Alien Hominid seemed really great at first. I love the humor and madcap graphics...but after a little while you realize that compared to many great shooters...it's just sloppy.

I think one of the worst problem with Alien Hominid is the scrolling. I don't know why, but it feels choppy even it's not really that much choppy. There's a part of the soul of the game, where you don't feel you accomplish something, you shoot stuff and they die, but, you don't really feel like someone who destroys a lot of stuff, maybe it's too soft for the genre.

Another note about psone Metal Slug X that no one seemed to mention, and is a big deal to me is the sound. It is horribly downsampled and scratchy, it actually hampered my enjoyment of the game bigtime more than any missing frames. Didn't matter if I played it on the psone w/lcd monitor, headphones, through my tv's speakers, or my prefered way, through my receiver, it sounds awful no matter what.

It's times like this I realize just how much I love my modded xbox. :D

Metal Slug X on PS1 is indeed excellent, despite a few compromises such as sketchy pixelated explosions. Not only does the main game load quickly and run smoothly, but the training school with the "impress Instructor Meg" scoring system and the dedicated minigames add extra play value that MS3 (Xbox) doesn't have. I still look forward to trying to get a little further in the distance run trying to score more virtual points with Meg....

Though if planning to hunker down and blast through a full Metal Slug game, the main game of MS3 is the one to play.

Just started playing my first Metal Slug --> MSAdvance

Great game, and definitely can't wait to get the collection on X-Box!

Rented and played Contra: Shattered Soldier (haven't played Contra since Hard Corps on Genesis) last weekend. I don't know, after playing Metal Slug, i find Shattered Soldier to be a bit hocky.

That's game's all bout memorizing the constant mini-boss battles rather than being about quick reflexes. I didn't enjoy the story or the hardcore generic rock music in that game either.
