Okay, I know this question may not be the best one to ask HERE, but I would still like some input...

School application time is comming up, and I've been wondering where to apply to. So the issue of HBCs came up, and I was wondering, is Morehouse a good school? Anyone here go there? Is it hard to get into? Please, fill me in. Thanks!

As their admissions page implies, it is full of guys trying to look tough and glancing to the left of the camera everytime someone takes a picture of them. Sounds like the perfect place for you!

I'm trying to resist the urge to twist the name of the school into something funnier and dirtier.

...still resisting...

GAH!

Dude, if you go to Morehouse you would be living in Atlanta...

Morehouse sucks. Stay far, far away.

Why do you hate Atlanta so much?

For a black guy, Atlanta is heaven. Lots and lots of broads. And that is what your education comes down to.

I don't get it...

I can barely navagate those sites... all premium shit.

Without paying cash you can find out that the average SAT score to get in is 1080, average ACT is 23.

You can also find out that it's a Tier 3 Liberal Arts College... which is not very good. But, hey! if that's where you want to go, so be it.

Your SAT and ACTs are better than that, right?

Depends on what you are going to school for Sirpopopop analysis is only halfway correct. Morehouse has partnerships with all the schools in the Metro Atlanta area. Morehouse engineers actually go to GA Tech for their schooling. Also if you want to get a foot in the door in Black Atlanta Business circles Morehouse isn't that bad off.

That being said it is chocked full of homosexual and bi sexual black males. So good luck with that. If you are looking for a HBCU that is better from my point of view I would look at Hampton, NC A&T, FAMU, & TSU in that order. I graduated from TSU so I'm extremely biased.

BTW, most HBCUs are loaded with opportunity and may not be anywhere near the class of top schools but it is all about what you can make of it. But I think that is common in life. I say go for it due to all the other things you can learn. Plenty have found, including myself that friendship and the experience are what define your college education at a HBCU versus the . My confidence and attitude toward life was molded at FAMU and they are worth more to me than learning the Kreb's cycle, which I might add, is necessary but overrated.

My college education was based more on learning to be a man, confident in my abilities, smart enough to understand my place in the world and that only I can place limits on my achievements rather than my Alma mata/race/location and all other superficial considerations. And I don't think I would have gotten that education at say a Florida State. I may be wrong and Florida State is a good school but there's more to education and becoming successful in life that what is found in any book.

Finally, Morehouse is a weird situation since they are not coed, even though Spelman girls take classes on their campus. But unisex education just has a weird feeling to it, no matter what the school is.

Yeah... sites tend to be very subjective, and there are tons of problems with U.S News undergrad rankings. Often the best way to get analysis of schools is to hear it from people like Tommie here, who lived in the areas where the school is located. :)

Edit: Scoot - There are a lot of undergrad schools where the average SAT and ACT needed to get in is around that range, yet the GPA necessary to get in is quite high.

Your post requires evidence.

Yeah, it seems most of the people going to the top tier schools: Columbia, Harvard, Yale etc. (Not like I could get into those school :lol ) have very few good things to say about the undergrad experence. Same could be said for UofM even... maybe I should go the first two years instate to save some $$$...

If that's what it takes to rationalize your mediocrity; preach on, da illest.

Ditto what that man said even though I'll take TSU in a heartbeat (until FAM gets some dancing girls you all will never be able to compete against the Aristocrats!). The HBCU experince is unlike anything will ever expereince and it is largely what you make of it. TSU doesn't even come close in ranking to a Columbia, a Yale, or anything like that but the life skills I got from school were priceless (similar to Skinny). That being said if you are looking for financial advancement IMO it will always be what you make it. I didn't go to a Yale or a MIT or a Harvard but, 8 years out of College I'm making several hundred thousands of dollars to do what I do. That's not because of the school I went to but because of the man I am.

That's my .02 you can leave it on the table if you want to.

Skinny Now I see where your name comes from.

or FAMU down in Tallyhoe.

I would say 75% of all HBCUs within driving distance of ATL are good enough. I mean I from there so it was like going home for me but, when you have those big classic weekend it helps to be able to drive to the ATL.

one of my very very good friends from childhood goes there. he likes it there but wants to transfer once his 2nd year is done.

he said the good thing about morehouse is that a lot of colleges go to that school and basically will accept any person going to morehouse just so their college doesn't lack minorities.

I'm not mediocre, it's just that I haven't heard too much good about the undergrad experence at any of the aformentioned institutions. Hell, my dad is in higer education, he says they're a waste of money. I have three relatives that go to Harvard, two of them transfered from Jr Colleges. Go figure.

BTW: Is that you in your avatar, Heezzi?

Most colleges and universities are a waste of money if you are going for pure education.
