Is Pirates! worth $39.99?

... I've been trying to track down a copy of World of Warcraft to no avail, and I might just wait until after Christmas when I get my inevitable flood of gift cards to buy it.

I have a gift card or two right now, and I could really go for a fun PC game and I see Best Buy has Pirates! for sale.

... Worth it?

Well the Spanish might take over your English town right before you can stop them causing your English lady friend to disappear forever.

Haven't played but I've read all the threads about the game and they have been glowing.

Knowing the taste of these boards... I'd consider the game strongly... especially for $40.

I would prefer to buy World of Warcraft, but getting a copy at this point seems impossible.

If Mike and MAF like it, chances are I will too. What's the replay value like? Is it open ended? Etc.?

Yeah, it's as open-ended as just about anything. You can do the quests you hear about or you can just make money trading & plundering. Like any of Sid's games there are several yardsticks by which you can measure success.

I can't imagine you not having fun for at least one Pirate career. Longevity really depends on how much you get into the game, I suppose, but the game is strong enough to support as much replayability as you are willing to put into it.

You should buy Civ III or Alpha Centauri too. :D

The fact that you are uh, acquiring the game through a... traditional method of software product delivery means that you've pretty much already failed the 'fuck around, be a pirate' test Willco.

I really just like pirates and games where you can fuck around. And be a pirate!

Pirates! will be fulfill both these aspirations handily. It isn't super detailed or really all that complicated, but it definately satisfies the pirating itch.

Buy it. I recommend Pirates more than any other title ever produced in the history of interactive entertainment. It's THAT DAMN GOOD.

Yep. I've loved it on the PC and enjoyed it enough to go ahead and put in a reserve for the Xbox version. It's a game that I'll never tire of and one I'd rather play on a TV on my couch. Hopefully the controls will be tolerable.

The minigames seem like they'd be well suited to gamepad controls. Sailing and dueling, in particular. The whole game has a certain cinematic flair that'll look good on a big TV screen, I think.
