Is the 911 the most boring sports car around?

I've just been looking at reviews of the new turbo S, and sure its super fast and all, but god damn the same old 911 shape is boring as fuck. There's is no sense of excitement with these things. And 6 cylinders? gross. This fucker here costs $500,000 Aussie dollars. For the same or less than the price of that you could get one of these chad-mobiles:

Usually when people talk about the 911, they talk more about how it feels to drive it than they do about its look.

It's probably shaped the same way every year because if the aerodynamics ain't broke why screw with them

I can understand how the normal Porsche models seem underwhelming and come with the cold german style. But when you look at the RS line, you find crazy looking, sounding and performing cars.

The GT3 RS is basically a GT4 race car with a naturally apsirated racing engine for the street.

And then you have the GT2 RS. Similar to the GT3 RS, but another league in performance. Coupled with the MR package from Manthey Racing (who are running race cars for Porsche) it becomes one of the absolute fastest cars you can drive on a track.

They build high luxury cars that are mostly used as that, but their track oriented cars are one of the best.

The 911 Turbo gives you hypercar performance in a reliable, refined car you can daily drive. 911s are about driving experience, not gawking at in front of the club. That said, the current Turbo is way too expensive and the Carrera level is also turbocharged now, and a Carrera S has as much performance as you'd realistically want in a sports car.

I wouldn't be caught dead in one. id literally rather die by getting hit by a porsche than drive one. if someone gave me one for free id leave it on the street with the keys in it and walk away before someone thinks im an accountant having a midlife crisis

And then ending up in a yellow Chevrolet Corvette with the hardtop off. Much better!

so when youre sick of being a chad and want some meaning you look for the truly finer things in life and you get a 911

at some point the car stops driving you, and well..

you start driving the car

alright alright alright

Good thing VW bought the Lamborghini, because their concept car before that was ugly as hell, but I cannot find it

I remember when it was called a perfection in design, so of course they stick with it, why change perfection, you at least know it will be smooth to drive.

I used to dislike them as a kid, but they're kinda growing on me. Yeah they're a bit boring to look at, but I still kinda dig them.

I wouldn't buy one though.

What's 500.000 aussie dollars in grown up money?

Still a lot, even after taking into account conversion rate, cars in Australia are often just shy of twice the price in the US, especially on luxury or sports models.

As to the Porsche, yeh they arent as in your face as other super cars but they do apparently drive amazingly.

But are you an accountant having a midlife crisis?

about 10 years ago i drove at sebring, it looks dated but drives fantastic, although i would never buy one

Different cars for different types. In the Lambo, you'll be afraid of speed bumps an have it in the shop all the time. The 911 can daily drive and still also be insanely fast while hugging the road.

Doesn't Porsche have a form follows function design philosophy ?? Like they're made to be driven for a long time and be efficient ?? That mercedes one is funny why is the front so long lol

I'd take a bog standard Carraera 991.2 or 992 over a Mercedes AMG GT! Even a used 997 Turbo over AMG.
Porsche GT2/GT3/RS? you might as well forget about them. Too hard to get one new and used are over priced.
996 are also good and cost effective, especially if you want something different to Nissan GTR. The 996 Turbo is a real weapon with upgrades.
You can also drive a Porsche and put miles on it with out much depreciation.
In England you can now get McLaren 720s for £100k used. But that is a different ball game to Porsche.

It wasn't boring to drive a 911 Turbo on a track, I can tell you that.

..they spin because of snap oversteer. Or, at least they used to.
More like lack of driver skill caused by lifting off the throttle mid corner.
Lots of people also crash front engine rear wheel drive by not knowing to accelerate and counter steer when you loose rear traction. Most people just mash the brake in and crash instead of driving through it.

I think all car enthusiasts should experience at least once in their lives a taxi lap around a F1 grade race track or the Nurburgring with a professional race driver in a race car or at the minimum a race prepped road car.
I've had a passenger lap at the Nurburgring with Apex taxis in a McLaren 675LT. Cost £375 for a lap and will never forget it. Amazing.

No, not dead. Just bound and gagged in the boot... and the boot is cramped. How dare you talk about a classy lady such as the 911 like that!

You know what? This makes me so angry that the gag has been upgraded to Melissa McCarthy's spent sanitary napkin. The bitter taste of obnoxiously unfunny comedy will leave you begging to be caught dead in a 911!

Has anyone seen where my gum went?

Uhh If you crash from it, sure. Snap oversteer is just a phenomena that some cars are more prone to; usually in older rear engined or mid engined RWD cars.

I think there are times when it still happens, but, things have been worked on over the decades to help prevent / mitigate it absolutely - so don't see it as much in newer cars
  • Suspension geometry
  • Extended wheel bases
  • Moving the engine forward while still being RR (I think the 991 moved the motor forward that it's sitting on top of the axles)
  • Vehicle weight balancing
  • etc
That said, 991 911 does feel like an RR, just not as much of an RR as say a 997...and not quite an MR like a Cayman either

Yeah, I havent driven any newer 911 but everything Ive heard is that they've dialed it out pretty successfully. Most cars these days are pretty "safe" so that your average schlub can wing one around at a pretty good speed without getting into too much trouble.
