Is the "Cell" another "Emotion Engine?"

So what`s the deal with the Cell processor that powers the PS3? They hyped it up a ton and said it`s been in development for years and then finally when they reveal the specs of the PS3 it only seems to be moderately more powerful than the Xbox 360. Is this just another case of Sony pulling an "Emotion Engine" where they over-hype on a processor and then under-perform? Wasn`t the Emotion Engine supposed to "display real emotions" and all other sorts of mumbo jumbo BS like that? I`m no techno-expert but can someone explain what makes the Cell so revolutionary (if it is at all)?

Yes, in that it will be a very successful in making PS3 a kick ass gaming console, but fail just as none-evenfully as EE in becoming a workstation chip.

pretty much EE redux, especially since it has no use in the computing world.

Most of it's self-championed greatness was how it would revolutionize Sony's electronic's corp. Of course, until it has valid use for consumer electronics other than PS3 that is a moot point and idealistic DREAM of ken.

I have been wondering the same thing. EE = fantastic in some ways but hindered by design choices, allowing PS2 to be superior to other consoles in some ways but inferior in others. Will cell do that too for the PS3?

We wont know til we see actual games.

OH...MY..GOD.

Where the hell do you people get this shit from?

If you aren't technically inclined in this area, don't even bother talking about the Cell.

Cell != EE

Period.

Cell is a much advanced CPU architecture in which I don't have the time to explain. Use google and read about it yourself, that is - if you can understand the tech jargon.

JUST LIKE MIPS AM I RITE?!? LOL

If the GPU is the bottleneck, why don't they decrease the CELL power, like lower the Hz or something to save money... or is it more complicated than that?

I'm skeptical, IIRC, the original PS2 demos were not indicative of launch games (though admittedly, final software was pretty close in quality). I expect PS3 stuff to look good, but mostly, in final product form, I expect all next gen stuff to look more like the 360 goodness, rather than the ps3 demo extra-goodness. There was so much hype for PS2 that wasn't delivered on, I truly expect PS3 to be the same way.

Pretty much, the GT demo back then is probably comparably to GT4 (oh yeah, it took them like 5 years to get to that level of eye candy).

You'll get the real deal when people (or you yourself) physically have the controller in their hands and play. Until then, who knows what kind of nonsense you're being fed.

While I don't doubt that the level of detail in the next gen games will be mind blowing, there's no point in being naive. Some GAFers no doubt are still waiting for their "Toy Story" graphics on the PS2 and/or Xbox. Pity the fools. :lol
