Is the Fallout series worth playing?

Perhaps theres a good game under the layers of dirt that have built up over the years but I got tired of digging and gave up.

What is this "digging" bullshit. The game still rocks. Dig harder, I guess.

my point is I think anyone playing fallout for the first time nowadays is pretty much guaranteed to have many more substantial complaints than someone that played it back when they were new.

Fallout just really didn't do anything for me. And I just booted up Wasteland and played with it for about an hour. This is what you guys call one of the best PC RPGs ever? Did it seriously just tell me "Read Paragraph 57."?

True enough, that said I played Fallout 1&2 for the first time maybe two-three years ago and I couldn't find anything wrong with them. Found them to be awesome in every way. Maybe it's because I'm so old (25), if I play a old game I don't compare them to modern games, at least not the same way as them young ones seem to do. If I'm not making any sense I'm sorry. I'm incredibly tired for some reason and my post seem coherent so far, but I can't be sure :D

Are you talking?

Then cuz I liked it enough I went back and played the original fallouts. Well not so much played as *tried* to play. But they just felt soooo slow and clunky that I couldn't tolerate it after having playing the real time mode of tactics.

No, you missed the point completely. The turn-based system is one of the best available today. Good ranged combat, good use of AP to regulate the number of actions you can take, skills and perks to make characters unique, etc. IMO it beats the hell out of most RPGs today as far as fighting goes - and that's not to mention the well-done setting, bizarre characters, the healthy dose of comedy, and for that matter, the instruction book that looks like something out of the 50s.

There are two camps regarding the Fallout series.

Camp 1. You love the games.

Camp 2. You, as a person, truely suck on various levels, not the least of which being your horrible taste.

Or as my father used to say: "Son, there are two kinds of people in this world. Those who like Fallout, and those who are GODDAMN FOOLS."

Thanks.
Look, I enjoy a good read as much as anyone else, but I'm not about to go pull up something to reference in the middle of a game. You're gonna sit there and tell me how it pulls you in while I'm flipping pages to reference 36? I can't believe that. Maybe the battle system is awesome, but I didn't see it when I just walked into a town and got shot down by nuns wielding machine guns. And I'm hardly a graphics whore, but the game just looks terrible. The colors just pain the eyes,

Quite true. Quite true indeed.

God, the sprite animations for the Fallout games are so great. Especially when you get a random ultraviolent kill.

By the way, a note for Mac owners: the Mac versions of Fallout and Fallout 2 are OSX native (not Carbonized) and run on low-end G4s (I ran Fallout 2 flawlessly on a 400MHz G4 TiBook). Those games should be in any Mac owner's library--Fallout 2 even comes with the full printed paperback manual (which is half the fun).

There is also a nice mod community at No Mutants Allowed.

Here is a nice mod that allows you to continue playing Fallout when it would normally end.

Yet more reasons why the Fallout series is worth playing. Anyone that says otherwise is a dirty poo-poo head.
