Is the Marvel Rivals honeymoon over? OW2 ties it for viewers on Twitch

With NetEase imploding the game's future is uncertain. They laid off all of their US-based developers and NetEase might not be long for this world.

OW2 brought back loot boxes (remember when people HATED those?) and is making some big changes that seem to be well accepted so far.

Of course someone is going to post Steam CCU when literally no one who plays OW2 plays it on Steam.

This might be news to you

But those people on Twitch are watching a stream of the game and not actually playing the game

I am trying to find something nice to say about Rivals, but I can't.

If someone plays it instead of Overwatch, it must be from a position of hate.

Rivals was built for people who hate Overwatch, which is a pretty shaky foundation to build a team shooter on.

Because as OW2 is showing, all it takes is one good update to draw people back.

Is this a joke? That's the most cherry picked screenshot imaginable. Even with these updates Overwatch 2 peaked at 74k viewers last night. Rivals had 195k. OW2 highest viewer count was 132k this week, Rivals was 231k. Overwatch has been losing ground since then. Another week or two we'll be right back to before these changes and Twitch statistics prove as much.

The people who dislike Rivals really try to go out of their way to grab at anything that might show the game is failing.

It's far more fun than OW imo, and the character designs are better and have a history I grew up with. I don't give a shit about a single character in OW.

Or… They simply don't care about Overwatch, and play Rivals casually instead, like me. It's not exactly a black and white scenario here.

It's strange that I recently got an invitation from my nephews to play this game together. We had played Fortnite together before. They've never played Overwatch. You could think of it as Overwatch for the new generation. If the game shuts down, I don't think they'll switch to Overwatch though. Probably different player base.

Rivals has a drops campaign going too.
Are they asking viewers to watch for 24 hours as well?

Taking too long to respond so I'll answer for you: Rivals' drop campaign is only asking for 2 hours because they don't need to artificially inflate viewing numbers.

Ironically, this could be what saves Overwatch.

The quality of gameplay difference is just astronomical.

I literally just loaded Twitch and that's what it showed.

And you didn't think to check and see if it was a trend or anomaly? You also know NetEase and Rivals aren't going anywhere, right? NetEase is based in China, they are closing studios and production outside of China, so "not long for this world" is a hilarious take.

Exactly this.

Their market cap is north of 60 billion, the company is doing fine and show good profitability.

But this is what happens when people who don't understand how businesses operate make threads and speculate. Businesses fire and hire people all the time to which can show investors that they are either investing profits or streamlining various aspects of the business, for again, more profits. There are a number of other reasons as well.

As someone who plays both games a lot I would say Rivals feels a bit rough compared to Overwatch but it certainly deserves its success. The Team has delivered an amazing hero shooter for free, been extremely generous with their battle pass with some absolutely amazing skins and delivered content updates at a very quick pace.

Overwatch 2 has been stuck in a rut for over year. It was interesting that Junkenstein's lab came out last fall and when I played it I thought this would make an excellent permanent mode and that is essentially what they did this month.

It got old quick. It's one of the most blatant ripoffs of another game that I've ever seen. Uninstalled it after probably 4 matches.

Lmao. Or...people wanted a fun game that happened to also include cool looking popular characters?

Yeah, Twitch numbers can help point towards popularity, but I don't think it's the best avenue to use when gauging if one product is better than the other. Especially if both are still successful to some degree.

I personally feel that the use of the Marvel IP itself is huge. The game is fun, and it's oozing with characters people love or feel connected to to some degree, and I think that's enough for many.

Regardless of Overwatch's campaign, I feel I see a lot more positivity thrown around regarding Rivals than I do OW.

Netease is not imploding, they don't need us anymore.

Twitch viewers are a bad benchmark. One could argue that many are playing the game than watching it stream. SteamDB is still king.

OW2 just feels better to play while MR has a lot of fun movement and abilities to play with. Both are honestly great options to have.

Real quick on loot boxes - I loved them. With those it was easy to get damn near everything just by playing as one normally would. Coins added up quick enough you'd have an option if you didn't want to wait for RNG luck to hit. It was a significantly more generous system than we ever had with the swap to f2p and subsequent battlepass that came with it.

I think this fall off will happen eventually but not now. OW is a far superior game, but of course it is, it's been out for 10 years and had time to iterate.

Rivals is jank city and coasting on the strength of the IP.

You're in a coalmine.

You're canary dies.

"It's just a canary guys! We'll be fine!"

Marvel Rivals has begun it's free fall. Overwatch 2 will be back on top by the end of the year.

So dumb, nobody is actually watching 24 hours, they just set the their browser to a stream and go do something else for a few hours.

Knowing the poster, his narrative would have been the opposite, had Microsoft been footing the bill for Rivals. 🤷‍♂️

It's crazy how these live service games just cannibalize each other back and forth, it's almostl ike the market isn't growing and all these companies can do is leech off existing games to try to get some sort of short-term success before they inevitably die off and get shut down.

Those US layoffs are quite overblown. As the media loves to do. Those people likely had very little influence over the final game. Is half a dozen people or so, most of the staff is chinese

NetEase aint going no where.

Its sounds like they have found their goose so they dont need devs from outside China anymore other than as support.

Who would have thought that there is a finite number of consumers.

Whether people like it or not, gaas is something that is here to stay for a while. A decently large part of the industry somehow found it's way back to putting games near the toy industry feeling as closely as possible, with microwave-quality games that go out of style in favor of the next 'toy' that pops up.

The best we can do is recognize it for what it is, treat it accordingly, and look elsewhere for something more meaningful...with the most important part here being the 'look elsewhere' as a lot of people online seem to be perpetually stuck on the step before.

I've had a lot of fun with the new perk system in OW2. Was a pretty smart way to bring some people back. Optimistically waiting for next seasons stadium mode to see the full vision of their perks

I haven't personally touched Rivals as I just don't want to learn another hero shooter after memorizing all of Overwatch.

This should be required viewing for everyone on GAF, Moon does a great job explaining the basics here. While not directly related to Rivals or OW, the breakdown of business cycles is salient.

Let's not revise history and say Ow1 was shit. In its prime OW1 was a behemoth with ridiculous potential for a real marvelesque verse capable of tv series etc with brilliant aesthetics etc. Then blizzard decided to torpedo it to oblivion and bring in boring and forced characters, dei overload and so much more...currently Ow2 deserves to be thrashed by rivals but damn if I don't miss the golden days of Ow.

Marvel rivals sucks if you are focused on quality matches that are competitive. I have hit GM1. There is no difference in my silver matches versus my GM1. People will insta lock 4 dps, refuse to swap, refuse to adapt, troll, afk, quit, flame each other, etc.

A big part of the issues stem from not forcing some kind of role queue. At least cap it to 2 healers. It's insane how long a match can go drawn out for when 3 healers just cycle ults to keep a point infinitely contested. Only about 1 consistent dps can wipe a healer or two of the map with moon knight, the rest just tickle them as they heal each other.

In OW2 the game has actual pendulum swings, back and forth, require strategy and positioning.

———

I still prefer OW2, but the player base is on MR.

I don't know about the game but as far as character designs go, marvel has them beat imo, hands down.
