I just finished playing the Legacy of Kain HD collection of Soul Reaver 1 and 2 that came out last year and it was the first time I had touched these games since back when they originally released. Going back to them after all these years was honestly a really interesting...experience.
I say "experience", 'cause these are clearly old games and that shows in plenty of ways...The controls can feel super clunky, the camera can be God awful at times, the combat is absolutely terri-bad (those Sarafan knight battles at the end of SR2, lmao) and some of the mechanics haven't aged very gracefully, still, I ended up enjoying them a lot more than I expected - something which I didn't exactly expect since I was very wary before jumping in again after 20+ years...
The exploration, the way the world is structured and the sense of discovery are things that still work remarkably well even today, plus, that art direction and amazeballs OST man...still amazing.
The story is where the games really (still) shine though :
The writing and voice acting are still excellent, and while the performances are very... "theatrical" (?) - sometimes almost to the point of being over the top - that exaggerated delivery is part of what gives the series its identity and charm and frankly, It's rare to see that level of commitment to tone and atmosphere anymore.
From what I understand, the Soul Reaver 1 & 2 HD collection sold fairly well which at least suggests there's still interest and I also know that footage leaked years ago from a cancelled 3D Legacy of Kain project that never saw the light of day which makes the whole situation even more frustrating in hindsight.
There's clearly STILL a lot of potential left in this universe and I really don't get how or why we didn't get anything new whatsoever related to this franchise and it's a G'damn shame, I refuse to believe that there's zero interest in dark, Gothic worlds with the heaviest dose of Vampire lore sprinkled on top in an era where WH:40K and Dark souls games sell well, hell, we even got Bloodlines 2 before a LOK one and I just don't get it...
Do you believe the series still has a chance at a comeback, whether through more remasters, a remake, or something entirely new?
LOK Blood omen 2 + LOK defiance are 99% coming in a 2nd HD collection (since the 1st one sold well) but, I'd really, really like to see something new in this universe.
Pour one for my boys Kain and Raziel...
(still one of the most amazing and recognizable tracks in gaming history).
