Is there an easy/reliable way to digitize VHS tapes?

The Light of El Cantare
Basically, I have a ton of VHS tapes that I need to convert to digital format and I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience doing this. I've already read various how-tos online and I've looked at several capture devices so I know how to perform transfers in theory, but I'm not sure what to trust as most of the devices available online look kind of cheap and I'm pretty much priced out of the most reliable-looking capture cards/boxes.

I mostly have a bunch of home movies along with a few things recorded off of television whose awesome vintage commercials I just want to upload to youtube, but with previous capture methods I've attempted I've sometimes had difficulties in overcoming Macrovision protection on the tapes, even with things home-recorded on blank VHSes (which, in these instances, may have been a result of using capture devices with built-in overzealous copy detection features like DVDRs). I can't find a lot of information on whether or not capture devices/software are able to consistently and reliably prevent Macrovision from interfering with the capture process or if it's even an issue at all, but I'd definitely hate to purchase something and then have it not work.

If anyone has any foolproof (and relatively inexpensive) methods for this I'd really appreciate any and all information. I've put it off for a couple of years hoping that one device or another would become the market standard but as it hasn't happened and I'm mostly left with the same assortment of slilghtly shady-looking little bundles of cords on Amazon, my current recourse is to seek some outside help. Thanks GAF!

I used to have a VHS to DVD player that would make dvd copies of my vhs. You could get one of those, then just rip the dvds? I did this one summer with home videos for my moms birthday.

I'm sure there's a much more efficient method, but thats what immediately comes to mind =p

I used a little USB dongle thing, and captured using Windows Movie Maker. Worked great.
