Is there any real reason to use Linux if you're not a programming guru?

So I started dual booting between Ubuntu and XP a while ago out of curiosity. I'd heard a lot about Linux, but I'd never used it that much, and decided that it was time to give it a whirl.

Now, I'm no technological novice, having programmed the CMS for my website from scratch, but to me, Linux is needlessly complicated to use. My biggest pet peeve is instead of having one icon that you double-click, you have to worry about a multitude of other things when installing a new application. Dependencies, and all that.

There are a whole host of other reasons why I don't see myself using the OS anymore, ranging from the lack of games, to having to jump through hoops to do things I always took for granted in Windows. You have to install specialized software just to get the eject button on your DVD drive to work? Really?

I'm sure if I was a comp-sci major, it'd be great. I'd be able to take advantage of its flexibility and I'd tool around with shit to my heart's content. But, alas, I'm only a programming novice, and a liberal arts major at that.

So is there any real reason why I shouldn't wipe Linux from my HD? Something I haven't though of?

i went thru the same frustration a few months ago when i couldn't get my 6G ipod to work too well. if apple made a Linux itunes, that might be enough for me to switch completely. until then, i dual boot Ubuntu 8.04 and XP, and really only use Ubuntu for pr0n :lol

I'm a Computer Science major, and I have two Linux boxes that I keep around. In no way are they necessary for anything (even programming), but I enjoy using them as file and web servers mainly because I don't really ever have to reboot them.

If you're just looking to casually use a computer for browsing and/or gaming, there's no real pressing reason to use Linux.

I have a linux PC set up as a file server for my home network, and as a LAMP stack for my web development work.

i borked my linux system last night compiling/installing a driver for my hdtv card.

fedora and the rest of the open source community, i shake my fist at you!

If your needs are primarily web surfing and basic word processing/multimedia stuff, it is about the same as windows except a) it's free and b) it's not as virus prone.

For gaming or specific apps, however, Windows has it beat.

I switched my parents over to Ubuntu when they started having various issues with their network card/antivirus/Windows updates. Having to walk them through stuff every time a bubble popped up on their screen sucked. After the initial "where is ___", I've had a lot less calls from them about tiny shit.

Basically, I think Linux is a fantastic OS for people at the poles. You can make it brain-dead simple for people like my parents, and really useful/extensible for gurus. People in the middle, especially gamers may not find enough value in it.

It's safer. If that's very important to you, that's a good advantage over Windows.

hate when people say this, with common sense web practices, you won't catch any kind of malicious software on your computer. been using windows since god knows how long and ive never gotten a virus.....
