Is this machine really legal?

neogeo_poc.jpg

oh my :D

I'm tempted to buy one. Cheaper than the Nintendo top-loader, and more convenient than the original model NES. Hmmm....

Heh, nice. Probably not legal, but I gotta admit I do kinda love this stuff. Some of these guys are so creative! At least they're designing a new shell and everything. Probably gets mentioned all the time, but kinda reminds me of the Treamcast. Oh, how I wanted one of those when they first came out:

What the shit?
when was that made? Do they exist anymore? :o

If they don't use any of Nintendo's tech in the machine it would be legal, it's not any emulator so you would still have to have an original game right?

Please Hurry! Special Introductory Offer Price of $29.95 may be discontinued at any time without notice. Buy More & Save More!

Hmmm. Discontinued at any time (apparently not just for out of stock reasons).

I guess this was maybe a year and a half, two years ago. I don't think they're available anymore, at least not "easily" like they were then. I'm sure you could find one if you wanted it badly enough though. Here's a little blurb from lik-sang on it, looks like there's a couple of reviews elsewhere if you check google.

Yes, it's legal. They've started selling it in the US under the Yobo label - check your local mom n' pop used-game shops. They'll usually include a cartridge convertor.

The ones that come in an N64 controller-shaped shell with preloaded games, however, are not legal. (And they seem to be disappearing from malls now...is Nintendo cracking down harder, or is it just the post-holiday turnover?)

There were reports a couple of months back that Nintendo was cracking down on them.

I've bought some games from estarland before, and I've never had any problems. I think I might even buy this thing from them -- the only thing that bugs me is that it uses "odd" controller pins. If there were an NES to "this thing" adaptor, I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. I want to use a Zapper!

Edit: I just realized that a 9 pin port means the controllers are probably "hard wired", like old Atari joysticks. Each pin probably corresponds to a single button input on the controller... this would SEEM to make an adaptor for a standard controller fairly impossible.

I don't think so. I own a Dr. Boy and it has a controller port like that AND includes a light gun.

Legal or not, my boss actually ordered some of these systems about a month ago...

...and we haven't sold ONE yet. :lol The cost is way too high; I notice that the site is selling them much cheaper. The store paid about $50 for each unit, and were originally priced at $79.99, but no one is going to pay that much, so it was dropped to $69.99. Still too high. :P

We have one on display, and I have to say, it works very well. NES games look weird sticking out of it, but the system works well; the picture is very good, and the controllers are surprisingly well-designed. You don't have to constantly clean the contacts or blow into games, either.

The controllers plug in, BTW, so using a Zapper should be fine.

I'll stick with my SNES Super 8 NES adaptor for NES games, however. :)

For what it's worth, I believe that this particular item may be legitimate, because while I was in Japan this past summer, I came across this system at nearly every game store I visited. From Tokyo to Osaka. I even saw it in Yodobashi Camera, which is a very big Japanese electronics store. I highly doubt they would sell any black or grey market devices. They're (Gametech and Yodobashi Camera) reputable companies, so I doubt it.

As fen said -- anyone can make an NES with off-the-shelf parts. IIRC the patent on the Famicom has expired, thus you -- yes, you -- could make one and sell it right now if you wanted.

Yes, plus remember that the NES is discontinued now (and has been discontinued for more than a year I believe)

So tempting. A few months back I saw them online (probably due to linkage from here), but $30 is a much nicer price. Composite output only?

That actually has nothing to do with it. Rez is discontinued too, but you can't go make your own copies of it.

Composite is as good as the NES / Famicom get in 99.99% of cases.

Actually, I just ranted about this yesterday.
Yeah, kinda figured a $30 Famiclone wouldn't have the latest and greatest; hell, a GCN component cable costs that much. But as many of our older composite TVs recently got electrically zapped and replaced with sets with better input, I'm becoming spoiled by clearer edges on things. Oh well, there's always Animal Crossing.

I appreciate Engrish... but I can't even imagine how anything ended up near "Super Potato". o_O
