Is We Didn't Start the Fire peak Billy Joel?

River of the Night probably made him more popular than the rest of his catalogue combined.

We didn’t start the Fire is badass though, and REM blatently used the fast tempo and lyrics (and current events) to propel themselves to stardom using the same ideas.

Are you suggesting that REM ripped off Billy Joel?

Nah he had peaked already. Piano Man, My Life, Honesty, Uptown Girl... but We didn't start the Fire was a nice come back, put him back on the radar, that whole album was pretty good. I like Downeaster Alexa. If it weren't for my parents I don't think I would've known his music though, he wasn't really putting out any stuff when I was a kid getting into my own music.

We Didn't Start The Fire is peak contemporaneous Billy Joel.. stunk of the time it was made in.. No for me the best of Billy was the Piano Man album, or An Innocent Man. Imho.

I think "peak Billy Joel" is his early 80's stuff, but I still like his later stuff too - even off the River of Dreams album (though I dont like that actual song).
