It's horses for courses - when I am on PS5, I just want the optimum settings the dev thought represented their vision - maybe let me choose between performance and quality, but even then I would prefer not to - when I am on PC, with a £1k graphics card, you can be damn sure I will be in the menus eeking out every last fucking frame out of that thing!
The worst thing with PCs is that when you do eek out 120fps with everything on, you will start a new level and get some stutter/glitching and then back into the menus again and online to see how best to manage the vram! Then a month later either the devs or nvidia patch it when you have finished the game. I guess we love it though.
I dislike it when it seeps into other art forms too. 2 hour movie or 3 hour Director's cut? Well I have to watch the Director's cut now, but it obviously has it's issues too. Four version of a song - one with a great solo and the other with a great intro. Aaaah! Just make one thing the best and I will consume that. You don't have to pick between three Mona Lisas.
