Before we start yes, I know that Windows 10 mobile isn't "Windows Phone" and Windows Phone died with 8 and that before Windows Phone 7 it was Windows Mobile and Windows 10 mobile is part of that series of products but not the Windows Phone, but everyone calls it windows phone anyway and Microsoft was completely inconsistent on this issue and made a lot of other dumb mistakes with Windows Phone. Word salad, Word salad. Moving on.
Microsoft has revealed their new upcoming smartphone over a year early (why?) the Surface Duo. Finally, the Surface phone we have all been waiting for, with a design completely abandoning the now dead trend of folding phones with one single plastic screen, smart.
Windows 10 X (ten ten?) is a new operating system that simplifies Windows 10 for tablet devices. However, with phones often being 5 to 6 inches or longer these days, that can easily work for a phone, especially a phone that folds into a tablet.
Microsoft announced the device would launch with Android for now, but it may be a better idea to make Android an optional OS and make Windows 10 X the primarily OS. Here is why after throughout research.
For one, Windows 10 has many apps from the biggest companies out there, apps people actually use. Add in integration with other Microsoft devices and you basically solve the App problem. Not completely no, but they won't have to start from scratch like with Windows phone and Windows mobile. You also make a good case to sell the phone to business users since Windows 10 X is compatible with all corporate tools and azure.
Since Xbox One has integration with Windows 10 devices, you could push the Surface Duo as a gaming phone as well with real games instead of the money grabbing android stuff. With Xcloud this makes even more sense because then you can easily stream Xbox One games to your Surface Duo.
This goes for Sony as well since Microsoft isn't competing with them in the phone space, so there could be a PC PlayStation app you can download and then stream hit games like Haze from PS Now right to your Surface phone! Of course the device will also have it's own exclusive titles that take advantage of the phones touch screen and other assets.
Since Windows 10 X will be static ported through X86 or X32, Microsoft could charge a very cheap fee to allow other phone manufacturers to slap Windows 10 X on their phones, and without the red tape you get with Google or Apple. This could help quickly carve out 15% of the phone market or more in a short period of time allowing for competition. This will result in the industry becoming more healthy ad no longer staying stagnant.
In the end everyone would win. Let me know your thoughts.
