My parents being from Zimbabwe it just sickens to see whats going on down there. This used to be most prosperous African nation but in just a few years the government has managed to destroy and take the country down the drain. The government is is punishing the poorest people for voting for the opposition. The government went to rampage destroying homes and left almost 250 000 people homeless without even providing temporary shelter. I mean how does a government treat its own citizens like that. I still have few relatives still living in Zimbabwe. This picture brought me to tears;

This two kids are brother and sister and are orphans and they were being taken off by a woman whose was burnt down by the government. Just sad

I really think people in America, speficially white people, would do more to help Africa if its problems were brought to them in a manageable, reasonable manner. Rather, the whole continent seems like an out of control, super-poor, super diseased crazy continent and you can't help but feel overwhelmed by all the problems there. Rich and powerful people seem to respond well to problems if they have a singular catastrophe or context to cling to.

They should either send someone in to assassinate mugabe or help create the conditions for him to be deposed by military coup. Stopping people from growing their own food in poverty stricken areas, the uprooting of families, destruction of homes (operation take out the trash? wtf!), re-allocation of land, oppression of the opposition and their supporters.... someone, maybe within their own ranks has gotta be itching to off this guy surely?!

The G8 should exert their influence on African nations and convince them to alleviate the plight of Zimbabwe's people in this event, and hope that they could help bring it about.

He's definately got to go.

The situation isn Zimbabwe has been horrible for years now, and the lack of any real action against Mugabe not just by rich nations like America, but other African countries is telling. Willco makes a point, but I think the bigger problem in dealing with Africa in terms of aid has been a lack of consistent focus and responsible aid. There is tremendous potential in the continent, the countries, and its people, but it's long been neglected and mired in local turmoil, much like former Soviet republics, Eastern Europe, the Caribbean countries, and Central and Latin America to some degree. Unfortuantely, it's not going to get better any time soon, particularly with this administration which can't see beyond the tip of their collective nose. The Sudanese genocide provided an invaluable opportunity to rally behind noteworthy causes and reinvigorate African aid, and Blair certainly deserves some credit in trying to push the issue (though he did rather miserably in the end), but ultimately, it seems things will only get worse before they get better.

Unfortunately no one gives a shit about Africans, especially western nations.
All i keep hearing on the news is what a horrible person Saddam was, and how we "had to step in" to stop him from murdering innocent people. Well, Africa is primed and ready for the US to embark on another mission of good-will.......but alas.

Maybe africans should pretend to have WMDs, hijack a few planes and blow up somthing valuable, the same way the Albanians got our attention in the 90s.

Or maybe the African Union should do something. Or Europe. Or Russia. Or China.

We aren't the only country in the world capable of providing help.

You sure about that?

Yes compared with other third world countries. Back in the 80s and early 90s, Zimbabwe was a model of a succesful developing nation. However that is all down the toilet now.

To compound the matter, there is still the AIDS situation which has ravaged Southern Africa. I think most of us who are privileged take if for granted that there other people in this world who live in fucked situation.

I was actually just wondering if you'd heard of a little country called South Africa.

...

What's ironic is that Africa is the source of plenty invaluable material and resources. In theory, the continent should house among the more richer countries anywhere. Gee, I wonder where all those resources are being hijacked and by whom...

but of course we forget what happened in Northern Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe back in 1960) with Minority rule. Of course Mugabe is a freaking over-compensatory psycho - but what Rhodesia had to go through was worse; suppresing black education so you could effectively control their lives?

The problem is not the Zimbabweans themselves - their education system is one of the most advanced within Africa. They are capable of taking care of themselves and establishing economies of scale in farming - the problem is Mugabe, the man is crazy and needs to be assisinated. Or something.
