It's FIXED CAM-TOBER!

(Apologies if I'm missing some kind of formality here, the last time I posted something on neogaf was in the Fixed Camera Angles Appreciation thread...! Let me know if there's something I should add, remove or change)

Wanted to bring the amount of new fixed camera games coming out to the community's attention - I'm a big fan of this approach (I run the Fixed Camera Appreciation Society on Steam), and I figured some here might be interested in the new wave of exciting titles.

Coming soon...! (In order of release)
Greek Tragedy - out 30 Oct 2025!

Recent releases...!

As somebody who enjoys games made with this approach, it's really heartening to see so many high quality titles coming out, including re-releases (Fear Effect!) and sequels (Tormented Souls 2!). Here's hoping you find something interesting to play or think about here...! =)

(And, again, let me know if I'm screwing up some kind of rules here)

Woulda been nice if the games were spread across fixed-camtober instead of all being crammed in the last 12 days.

Totally. I am committed to getting Tormented Souls 2 and Echoes of the Living in the near future but it would have been nice to have one of them to play in full at the beginning of the month when they were not competing for my time with other big releases.

P.S. Despite it being a bit old and having uneven presentation I would also recommend Them and Us to fans of the genre. The secret ending is awesome. It goes on sale frequently.

P.S.S. GOG currently has it on sale for $10. https://www.gog.com/en/game/them_and_us

Yeah, we're pleased but a bit worried in the Fixed Camera Appreciation Society, tbh - these are some highly-anticipated titles, but it seems like everybody was desperate to grab that Halloween spot. I'm a big proponent of fixed multicam design, but I'm not sure that there's enough of an audience to support all these releases at the same time. On the other hand, maybe so many fixed cam games at once will get these games some more mainstream attention...!

Really looking forward to Echoes of the Living (sounds like it had a tortuous dev cycle) and Tormented Souls 2 (the first one was fantastic!). And, yeah, Them and Us is great fun! ...and if you're on GOG, consider checking out the original Resident Evils - #2 is a no-holds-barred classic.

There's a demo, but I haven't played. I don't know about its release date, I'm afraid.

The same. Yeah, it's been developed for a long time, but the same with Stay Out of the House and it's one of the best Puppet Combo games. I think it will be released this year, maybe?

I haven't played this RE clone, but it was released this year.

These games are from 2020, but I think they still deserve more attention:

Hell yeah, (semi) fixed camera is awesome. Couple that with tank controls and it's just perfection.

I'm going to get Tormented Souls 2 for sure, I've finished the first one a few days ago. I have added some of these games to my wishlist, thanks OP for the thread.

Excited for Tormented Souls 2, liked the first one even if it had of some really janky gameplay sections and obtuse puzzles and backtracking.

Heads up that OG RE123 are up on PSN and free if you owned the PS3 versions i think.

I could only found OG RE1 if I searched for "resident evil director's cut"

F freemandos - Loved The Mute House! Could have done with more characters to talk to, but it's a beautiful-looking survival horror...! And if we're talking about Puppet Combo, man, I can't wait until we get that Glass Staircase remake/Steam release (the gameplay is questionable, but the atmosphere is fantastic...!) Some great titles in that list, thank you!

mèx mèx & Rocinante618 Rocinante618 - Did you try the demo for the second one? Some interesting ideas there...!

Echoes of the Living looks great. I think I heard about it on one of the Last Stand Media podcasts being gushed over and yeah, it looks like a love letter to the survival horror of early RE.

Hey folks, if you're looking for more fixed camera games, check out our Steam Group or our Curator - we've tons of lists in the Curator breaking down fixed multicam games on Steam into different types , and our Group has the most complete lists of fixed multicam games on ANY platform (see our discussions forums for those lists).

...Also, just learned that Sanguine is coming out in a few days, so added that to the list.

I did not, I'm going in blind. Saw the trailer though.

I have been playing RE 1/0 HD remakes and need something similar, really great genre. Niche but has passionate fans.

This is maybe a bit pretentious, but I tend to think of fixed multicam more as an approach than a genre - you don't only have to do survival horror with it (though that's pretty great). People do seem to be quite passionate about it, though, I agree - either for it or against!

True, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a good example of a game using a semi fixed camera to enhance the atmosphere. Worth a playthrough just for that, the game still looks amazing thanks to the camera direction (and the art style too obviously).

I've never played Lords of Shadow! I'll throw it on the wishlist - we have Devil May Cry 1-3 on our lists, so we're definitely not opposed to character action...!

These games aren't from this year and I don't have them, but:

Interesting choices! The Fear Business was fun, but I think the main gameplay mechanics got stretched out over a bigger game than they could support. If you're interested in Tomás Esconjaureguy's brand of horror, may I suggest you check out,
- which is basically a perfectly formed package of indie horror.

Kwaidan is a lot of fun, but the control system is utterly bonkers. On the other hand, there's great puzzles and a lovely story that really engages with Japanese folklore.

If we're making general recommendations, I'll just take a look at the 'Discount' tab of our fixed cam curator on Steam...
Dordogne is a beautiful but linear reminiscence of a childhood in rural France - great sense of place and very cute, going for €5.99!

- For my money one of the best-written games ever made (thanks to Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin (of Idle Thumbs) and Gary Whitta (Rogue One)). Lots of scares and heart for €1.47!

- Yes, it's directed by David Cage. Nonetheless, the opening chapters are some of the most dramatic, exciting narrative gameplay you can play today (and this came out for the PS2!). Uh, however, I disavow everything that happens after the first hour. €1.99!

I could go on - but I'm curious, what other fixed multicam games do you think are essential to play?

The pre-rendered Final Fantasy games for sure (VII, VIII, IX).

EDIT: The Baiten Kaitos games too. There are quite a few JRPGs with fixed camera or semi fixed at least.

Ooo! Didn't know about Baten Kaitos, I'll look that up, might add that to our list on the discussions pages.

We mostly focus on fixed multicam games on the Fixed Camera Appreciation Society (so, "games with direct character control and multiple predefined third person views per room"), but we cover games like the pre-rendered Final Fantasy games in one of our discussion lists. Some really gorgeous FF PS1 backgrounds, though - and Chrono Cross too...!
