Good. I hope they all lose their jobs and CR dies. They are cancer and so is everybody supporting them.
And who will localize the animes then ? Funimation is not any better. CR also funds anime production with Webtoons now.

How long does it take to translate an episode? At like 20 minutes long, I assume someone skilled can probably do a rough draft in real time, no? Even allowing 2 hours for clean up, that's $40/hr?

It takes around atlest a day. Translating, Editing, Typesetting(I have done this, its tiring in some shows and official typesetting is a joke), Timing and QC Checking. Ultimately it depends on the show. If you sub the Monogatari series like ANE/Coalgirls did(typesetting every sign you see), the typesetting alone will take more than a day.
Official Subs

Mistakes made by the club you run are your mistakes, Sanageyama!
Underwater Subs

The sports clubs are your responsibility, Sanageyama, as are their failures!
Now this is nitpicking. Most of the time it does not matter, its around a day.

That's surprising, I figured there would be software they typed into in real time that timestamped, formatted, and exported to srt largely automatically.

They dont use srt subs, they use ass subs and use Aegisub to edit them.

😂 “essential workers”

yeah we all need translations of cartoons for children.
This is a market forces issue. If there’s 10,000 nerds who learned Japanese to watch anime and jobs for like 12 of them, of course it’s going to pay shit. Get a real job, and do that a side hustle.

Crunchyroll has 2.6 million paying users and their executives live like millionaires.

80 USD per episode

Some economies can only live by exploitiong their workers or they die out.

People need to find real ways to make this possible and get rid of those fake economy processes.

On a global scale:

The biggest exploiter of world economy is still China. No country can compete globally against them when they rely on slave work and governmental pushed industries with fake numbers.

In this case it is just an exploitation of hobby. Crunchyroll is owned by Otter Media, which is owned by AT&T. As I explained before Crunchyroll is not short on money.

They are bigger than most anime studios. Stop assuming Crunchyroll is small.

I worked two years for the gaming industry as a translator.

I could not pay my bills. It was fun, but I had to leave it.

If it's something that's not sustainable, it sucks, but you can always find other stuff to do.

Executives of successful company are rich. Hardly surprising.
People have been making fan translations for years, for free. It’s really not surprising it’s a shit paid job.

And a lot of fansubbers/fan-scanlators/fan-translators make more than official translators through Patreon and donations, even though fansubbing is basically dead.

So much shit to stan for and you stan for people to be poor doing their job. C'mon.

Fansubs existed to mitigate the accessibility issue. When you have a middleman making money by giving access to audiences of that content, you deflate the purpose of fansubs.

Kind of my point. There are other things you can do and make decent money.

I guess I should complain to Rupert Murdoch that my younger brother can’t make a living from delivering his papers. It’s essential after all. Shame that literally every 13 year old with a bike can do it.
There will always be low paying jobs and high paying jobs. It’s about how many people can do it. If translators for anime were a scarce resource, I’m sure they’d get paid more. But they’re happy to suffer through it, I guess because they can’t do anything else.

Are manga publishers in the us any better, yen press actually seems more professional than alot of these dubbing, and anime licensing companies.

Don't forget them ruthlessly exploiting every 3rd World economy they can get their grubby hands on by flooding the market with the cheapest shit imaginable they know will break after less than a week.

I'm not defending paying shit wages....but this right here is all too common in some industries.
When you have an almost endless supply of young motivated people who are willing to work for shit wages to get into an industry they've wanted to be a part of for years, as a company it's easy to take advantage of them.

Reminds me about the time I worked in advertising. Ad campaigns with budgets of hundreds of thousands, made mostly by people working like 80 hours a week on a $700 salary, supported by unpaid interns (some would get paid $50). And every now and then the agency owner would come in his Ferrari to give an inspirational speech about how if you work for free doing internships for a couple of years and then spend another 10 years working 80 hours a week making the same as a 45 hours a week retail worker, you "might" make it big.

How is it not a real job? Please enlighten me.

Would you do fan translations of games on Retro Consoles if you think certain games deserve to be loved by fans?

I think doing it as a hobby would br better for you if you still crave that stuff but with no pressure from anyone other than your own time and commitment.

We really need cringe emote around these parts for this kind of shit lol.

The audience is not picky and were plenty happy consuming shit illegally with crap fan subs, so why would CR or any other place pay more? If CR went away, people would just go back to doing it for free.

Bingo.

anime fans did it to themselves.

if accessibility is the major concern, than anime fans and companies should be more focused on different and better English voice actors, so that these shows don’t all sound the same.

Only thing more pathetic than the company offering these wages are the idiots who accept them.
