It's Official Madden 2006 is broken...

For the first couple weeks of online play the games have been really strategic taking advantage of all the great new gameplay mechanics. But like 2004, 2005, and now 06 there are cheesers online exploiting glitches in the game that ruins it for me. I would detail all of the glitches I have seen during my last five games, but I worry that I would simply motivate potential cheesers to rape the game somemore. Thank you EA for taking away a choice between football games. How many games have to be released where someone can nanoblitz, block punts, rocket receivers, and do disconnect glitches. The 360 version better have its shit together man 'cause I neeeeeed to have my football fix.

There's a league with real players who play real football, and it's right here on GAF.

PS: The 2K series would do you no better and no online game is without cheaters.

I don't wanna sound like a troll or anything but I am just tired of these losers online ruining what is an otherwise good game.

Hasn't Madden always been "broken" in this way? If it's not an actual "glitch" it's some poor design choice that gets exploited.

And it's not just Madden. You just hear about it with Madden more because there are so many more people playing it, and because the 2K camp is so ridiculously supportive of the game that it could set their system on fire and they'd find something good to say about it.

Oh c'mon do tell, I find stuff like this interesting. Who plays games with random folks any more and expects to get a fair match anyway?

This has nothing to do with online, but how in the hell do you return punts in this game? My blockers don't-you know-block, and if I try to control a blocker, he won't engage the nearest guy, and if I don't control the receiver and fair catch, he fumbles the goddamn ball. I practiced returning punts for a half hour the other day, and never got more than a two-yard gain. I know there's something I'm missing here, right?

It is not interesting when it is happening to you, trust me on that buddy. Usually I do not expect to have a game degenerate into "I'm gonna exploit this glitch all game long" kind of thing. I can't wait to see if the new X360 viewable feedback actually works. If they emmulate how Ebay does their feedback system, people might actually be scared to cheat. I might join a league like one of you mentioned

ESPN 2k5 was broken too but due to the fact that the game was much more playable there was always a counter. You could play random guys online and still have fun. AI glitches in madden have always been a bigger deal for me because the game controlls like crap.

Halo 2's feedback system stopped no one. Also, you can leave negative feedback on any innocent folk.

:lol

But couldn't they patch Madden 06 and fix some of the glitches like Bungie did with the big Halo 2 auto-update? Oh wait, this is EA we're talking about... ;)

Apples and oranges dude. FPS is alot more random in nature than football games. In football you can read feedback from others and see if they exploit glitches etc. It would be helpful in looking over the bredth of comments and deciding to play. I think it could work.

Halo 2 feedback was never visible to other players, and the random matchmaking never really let you choose who you played against. If you could see someone's feedback before you agreed to play against them in Madden, I think it would be a different story.

From the few games I've played on Madden, it seems liek people REALLY hate to lose. Everytime I go up by more than 1 touchdown (yes, 1...) people get "disconnected"/ turned off their Xbox in frustration. If I ever start to lose, I stick with it. There's always a chance. I don't leave while losing in a back and forth game(I score, he scores, repeat) by 2 touchdowns in the 3rd quarter. I dunno, maybe I have to play with a few more people, but that's happened pretty much everytime. Never seen an exploit though.

Also, although the online menus and stuff are much sleeker than the normal ones, it just really kind of breaks up the 2 too much. I dunno how to explain it, but the online menus just seem so out of place compared to the rest of the game.

no, you're not missing anything, it sucks. go for a punt block everytime, that gives you an extra second or two.

Doesn't Halo 2 just use the same general feedback system as the rest of Live? There isn't really a game specific feedback system in it from what I know.

Haha, wow, I noticed that too. I'm almost never able to return punts. "Blocking" has never exactly been a strong point in the Madden series...

Wow that's weird considering I get good punt coverage most of the time and have returned 2 kickoffs for TDs in about 12 games...let's make up some more shit about the game!

stop your whining. every online game in the history of gaming has had cheats, glitches or cheesy play. if you don't want to put up with that crap, join the gaf madden league.

the difference between the joke of a game nfl 2k5 and madden is that you can actually control what you are doing in madden. you have to make an attempt to play like a cheesy asshole in madden. in nfl 2k5, who the fuck knows! hey, you caught an 80 yard TD cause your opponents DB went into some weird matrix animation? you cheesy bitch! oh, you see a wide open running lane... but you're using the bills? TAKE OFF DREW! it's free 25-yard gain day! have a wide open receiver? throw to him, perhaps he won't try to catch the ball with his elbows! oh wait... he will.

yes madden has exploits, just like every game. there are options to avoid those exploits. i have NEVER used any of those exploits online, nor do i play in a cheesy fashion, and i'm consistently ranked in the top 200 on xbl. not bragging, just saying you can have an enjoyable time while keeping your ranking up without playing random assholes or without resorting to cheats

Nothing you can do. This same bullshit was in last year. At first I thought it was shitty blocking by my Rams Special Teams (since their Special Teams sucks in real life anyway), but it happens with all teams.

Returning punts is complete crap in Madden. Good luck if you can get your Punt Returner to average even 2 yards a season.

Yes, because when things happen to me, it's making shit up, but when things happen to you, it's fact. I like that logic.

punt kicks? I don't believe you.

Well he has played a whopping 12 games... I played more then 12 games before I returned it and went back to ESPN 2K5. The punt and kick returning blocking, JUST LIKE ESPN 2K5 SUCKS. Unfortunately getting a Madden diehard to see the error in Tiburons ways is a waste of time and effort.

I mean the glitch where you can see what play is being called (run/pass) via the Defensive Coach's Cam is just assanine and poor testing. But I am sure one of the Madden Crew will find a way to defend it here.

The Punt returns are quite hit or miss, emphasis on miss of course. The kickoff returns work nicely I've found, you can really find the seams and no players seem to magically catch you out of nowhere.

The one glitch I've seen exploited really isn't so much a glitch as it is abusing the moronic CPU speed. Some guys will punt the ball straight up in the air so it goes about 15 yards downfield. When it comes down there's a huge mass of wiggling humanity waiting for it and then there's a 50/50 chance the punt team will recover it after it bounces off eight of the return team's players.

Not a lot of people use this, but it's really effective. Generally, if someone pulls this crap I disconnect immediately. In fact, the minute I see anyone abusing/glitching the game I quit. I could care less about my ratings. I'm just looking for a fun, balanced game of football.

Agreed.

As mentioned before, it's easy to find gaffers to play with in Madden, so just do that.

Also, did you guys know that the GAF ESPN NFL 2K5 League was far and away the most popular sports league in GAF history? http://www.ga-forum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=8&daysprune=-1&order=desc&sort=replycount The proof is in the pudding. Please don't accuse us football diehards of not playing NFL 2K enough.

Bet that was a blast, if only they had recorded convos of a few of you playing

GAFER 1 - This game sucks.
GAFER 2 - God I hate this why are we not playing Madden?
GAFER 1 - ?
GAFER 2 - ?
GAFER 1 - Did I mention this game sucks?

GAFER 2 - God I hate this why are we not playing Madden? (After my CB AI decided to go into a retarded animation, giving up an 80 yard TD)
GAFER 1 - ? (How did Bledsoe just run for 40 yards?)
GAFER 2 - ? (I dont know, I'm still trying to figure out why my All-Pro LB couldnt catch up to him)
GAFER 1 - Did I mention this game sucks? (After finding out theres no QB Spy option)

There ya go.

Why don't you read the fuckin' topic if you're interested in what we said about the game. Contrary to what you may think, a lot of us had a lot of fun despite Duce using Josh McCown like Mike Vick.

bdoughty, I distinctly remember you telling other 2K fans to get over the license thing and move on. Why the hate now? There are plenty of ex-2K guys playing in the league and having fun.

I used to play a lot of NFK2K3 on XBL and that's how it always is with people. They're just sore losers.

A kickoff return is different from a Punt Return.

There is no defending it, the punt returns in the game are broken. The game is not without faults. Like, I find it annoying how sometimes after I change a WR's route or have him run to the marker the damn passing icons disappear when the ball is snapped. I've taken several sacks because of that. Also got a delay of game once or twice because sometimes after you audible or fake an audible, the ball won't snap upon the first press of the X button. They're minor, but they're obvious problems that should have been rectified....especially when they didn't exist in last year's version.

Hmm.. I noticed you mention the x button. This may be PS2 specific because I've played a full season offline and numerous online games and never seen this on the XBOX.

EDIT: not the punt returns, the icons and audible thing.

Yeah, I played a whole season offline on the PS2. Maybe it is PS2 specific. The first time they happened, I thought it was just a fluke. But I've had both issues repeat two or three more times after that.

Yeah, sometimes it hangs on an audible. I think the game sometimes misses the audible you called and thinks you're still picking the audible play when you hit the X button - thus no movement.

Hate? Just pointing out facts. I tried Madden and decided to go with NFL 2K6. Updated rosters and the Flying Fin editor that lets you play this years schedule. I was tired about people blaming EA for getting the NFL License (had nothing to do with this).

As for Wellington I have no need to read what I already know. Same group of people ranting about the same things. SOme people are more open minded then others. Proof is in this very thread.

damn reading through some of that thread brought back some great memories about how stoked I was about the ESPN league.........until it actually started. I cant believe how badly Sega/VC fucked it up.

this also makes me wonder if EA will ever step up to the plate and offer leagues with the features that ESPN had but didnt execute on. hell I would settle for something as simple as the play by play for every single game that we got with ESPN.

dude, are you that much of an idiot to believe that 16 people who "hated" nfl 2k5 before they even bought it would waste their fucking time going through the problems of setting up a league, scheduling games and putting a lot of effort into getting it going JUST to say "whoaaaaaa hey fellas we tried it! lets go back to madden!"

you have to be fucking kidding me. nfl 2k5 was broken into a million piece jigsaw puzzle. the game was no fun and it seems like the only 2 people who had any kind of prolonged fun in the league were the 2 people who seemed to have ignored every gamebreaking flaw there was (duce and konex)

Speaking of those who do not have an open mind about football games... When in doubt and in the wrong be sure and resort to name calling and profanity. Somehow other gamers on the sports only forums I attend are able to appreciate the game for what it is. Some hardcore sports gamers, some not. Many who played the game through college in real life, a few that are still active in the game (coaching/scouting). Feel free to continue to convince yourself that the rest of the world agrees with you, minus a few mindless idiots. I will keep enjoying what I consider the better overall football game.

I have 2 beefs with Madden's gameplay. I am not sure they can be disputed.

The first is punt return blocking. It is just terrible. What is odd to me is kick returns are fine.

The second is the dreaded Mario running. It really sucks when you are running a sweep and you run into an o lineman and the tailback just sits there running in place while the 10 foot gap is closing on the left. In some ways I think that is why some people think the running is overpowered in ESPN, is because the runner will actually run around crap like that.

Yep, those are two of the big problems I have with the game as well. I don't have a clue as to what's up with the blocking on punt returns - it's just freakin terrible.

As far as cheesers online, it happens every year with every football game. Not much you can do about it but play with a group of people you know.

The best players have to learn those glitches and or exploits though...because that's how you win 50G's! 2k5 shouldn't really be mentioned in this thread though, a different year could've meant an improvement. We all knew that Madden 2006 was broken to all hell way before the game came out, and I have even given a couple of reasons why we should expect that, every year. I'll repeat them here for those who missed it.

The development cycle makes it almost impossible to make a new game each year, and have it glitch and expoit free. Not only that, the game is seemingly not tuned for high level play, just for casual play. Give EA and some of the best glitchers and cheesers and real gameplayers for a few months, and they'd iron out most of that crap (you'd think). Though the game would have to come out every 2 years, or allow the game to be patched and updated, or allow sliders to be used online in leagues. Whatever the solution, EA isn't doing it, and with the latest sales, won't be doing it. Why should they, they own the market and the license.
