My new PC is built, but prior to that, I was heavily into PC RPGS, like Diablo, Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, and Icewind Dale 1 and 2.

I'm looking to play a good and fundamentally sound FPS, though, and was wondering if Counter Strike, a game I've heard a lot about, is worth playing? If so, is there an option for LAN or TCP/IP multiplayer in the game? I'm not interested in playing with strangers, so a few friends and I have decided to give this one a shot.

No. It's dated, and the community that keeps it alive is almost completely populated by l337 d00dz who like to talk about how much of a faggot you are. Basically, it's like the online Halo community, except ten times worse. That's all from my experience though.
 
Actually, the only real option is to play it online or LAN. There is no single player.

It really is a very well designed fps though. The weapons all have learning curves to them, and tactical play rules all. It really is more of a thinking man's fps vs. your typical fast paced twitch tedium.

I never played Counter Strike either...i felt like i missed out on a whole online playing segment of my life :lol

Ummm, he already said that he's not interested in playing with strangers.

If you have a group of friend willing to give it a shot, you should definitely go ahead.

Though, CS has lost much of its greatness since the glory of the beta days, it still remains a fundamentally sound team-based competitive game. Basically, it WILL be fun for you guys. Especially if none of you had ever tried it out before.

Yes, there is LAN play (with decent bot support if you want to fill up both teams).

CS gets a lot of the same tired hate over and over again, but it's still a fantastic game. It can be daunting, particularly if you play public servers because you'll wind up being a corpse for most of your experience.

Yes, it does still get a lot of hate, for good reason. Log on and you typical experience will probably go along the lines of someone team-killing you at the start of the match followed by them spray-painting a penis logo on your face and telling you to "stop sucking dick faggot". It's a wonderful online experience.
 
CS has a lot of assholes playing it, at least thats how it was the last time I played which was many years ago.

I'm sure it hasn't changed. There were also a lot of cheaters too.

I don't know how many thousands of hours I've logged on CS, but I really don't remember instances like this happening very often. My experiences have been pretty damn good, with the rare asshole ruining it for a few minutes until an admin fixes the problem or I find another server.

That said, I've had miserable experiences in dozens of online games.
 
you guys jump on some terrible servers :lol ... there are plenty of decent servers out there, but then again a n00b would probably get his ass kicked on one

I agree - to be fair, I haven't really played in a while, so the community might be more mellow by now. But this is why I'm terrified that MS is pushing to allow "user customization" in online games. Just more ways for lamers to put penises into games and new ways for them to call you a faggot.
 
Thanks, guys. I'm going to pick up some copies of the game today. They should be cheap now, I'm guessing.

Reason I'm trying to switch to FPS for a bit is due to my general disenchantment with current PC rpgs. Every multiplayer PCRPG these days is a goddamn MMORPG, like these developers never heard of other multiplayer options. Baldur's Gate 1 and 2; Icewind Dale 1 and 2; Diablo 1 and 2...great games that I can play exclusively with friends over LAN and not--like someone pointed to earlier--have to worry about someone spray-painting a penis on my character's face, advising me not to do something that I already don't (i.e., sucking penis).
 
Nothing compares to Halo 2 though. Worst community ever.

Original release of CS. I'd probably pick up Half Life 2, with CS: Source, but my PC's glaring weakness involves its video card.
 
Actually HL2 is the price of what most new games when they debut, for another 10$ you get everything in the back catalog except CS:CZ. Only ripoff with HL2 is the gold package, though when you think about it's optional and they do give you a lot of junk. Playing CS now is a mixed bag, due mostly to whining, scrubs, and hacks along with the occasionally admins who just don't like you. Want to ensure you never have a bad CS experience get your own private or public server. I would debate which community was worse but I recall the fact I didn't renew my xbl account because Halo2 was a complete disaster.

:lol :lol This is so funny, sad and reflective of the online FPS experience 90% of the time.
 
Going back a few years, my and a bunch of friends used to go and play CS at the internet cafe nearly every week-end, we got so many of us coming that we would have the best LAN games. We finally stopped doing that when we realised that we spent waaay too long playing it and we looked like complete losers:P.

I really enjoy it. I play it from time to time and even though I suck compared to some people, Its still fun. I recommend that you give it a go, its fun when you play it with friends, but dont play it online, I find it really boring playing CS with no one you know.
 
CS is fine, you could play with me if you want to.

We had a CS get-together a while back, not sure if anyone's still interested.
 
If you really get into it, Counter strike can provide one of the most rewarding experiences.
Granted if you are just looking for simple fun and relaxation , CS is not for you. The previous statement really reflects most of the posts in this thread, having a hard time hanging on because alot of players are very proficient. CS has been around for about 5 years, keep in mind you are entering an arena where some players have had enormous amounts of play time.

I must admit that some of the community is immature but that does not reflect the majority. Actually to truly grasp the incredibly deep mechanics you need a semblance of maturity and cognitive ability. The game depends alot on sound, you can plot a situation in your head of what is going on simply by knowing the maps and analyzing the sound generated by footsteps and shots. Every gun has an individual recoil pattern and range capacity, which greatly expands the areas of expertise. Also if you really enjoy the game there are many leagues in which you can compete.

I agree except that I started playing CS for fun. When I started, I played with very experienced players and it helped me get better at the game. I recommend bots if you want to learn the recoils and how to run n gun before entering the fray. The game isn't very easy, so a lot of players get frustrated their first time out and just quit. You can also join noob servers if you're really weaksauce. We didn't have those when I was starting out :(

About the jerk players: It's usually just rampant in retarded clan servers. And most of the time it's an admin or admin's friend with a small dick. If every single game those things that were mentioned in this thread happened, do you think there would be such a vast community to this day? It's not like Halo 2 because there's moderation. Just stick to regular pubs and organized clan servers and you'll be alright.

Silver package does have CS:CZ and CS:CZ deleted scenes.
 
Counter-Strike, at least the versions prior to Source, has been my favorite online multi-player game ever. I've made so many friends from all around the globe in my 5 years of playing that I couldn't imagine any game as fun while messing around with them. It helps if you have your own server and friends to fill it up, that way you can control the idiots as well as customize everything to your liking. A lot of people complain about the community, which is easily justified base on the tons of immature players out there, but in my opinion, the other part of the community is the best thing about it. If I never made the friends that I had, I would have stopped playing years ago. These days, I play to play with my buddies, I couldn't care less about the actual game I was playing.
 
Custom maps keep it fresh. I rarely play normal maps anymore. Except for the "new" ones they release like compound and assault.

Right now I'm on a glass map kick. The maps are based entirely around glass floors. With beams, usually destructible, in between. Great fun. Really improved my skill and respect for the FAMAS too.
 
If you play in public servers, you're bound to run into whiners, cheaters, lamers, campers and all the lowest forms of internet-fauna.

However, if you play it with some mates, or semi-serious players, it's quite probably the best multiplayer FPS on the planet. It really shouldn't be after all these years, but I'll be damned if it isn't.

Halo PC online would maybe have it beat if it weren't for the god-awful netcode.
 
counter is the greatest game of all time. i dont give a fudge what u guys say, ive been hooked for 3 years and counting.
 
Counter-Strike is really freaking abnormal, first, and it's the game where you're least likely to be able to transfer skill to another FPS from.

That said, it all depends on the server. I have fun with CS over LAN, and I never have much trouble finding a completely tolerable server to stick around on.
 
I'm a 3 year Day of Defeat player ... and I think CS has a pretty steep learning curve.

Besides the fact that you play with guys who have been logging in 40 hours a week for 5 years into the game, you have jackass players, and it takes a long time to learn which weapons are worth buying.


That's why I like DoD better. Its still "fast" like CS, all weapons are effective (and the nades actually kill people :) ), and it is more team orientated. So even if you suck at first, you can pick up and MG42 and help defend for your team, or become a mad flag capper and help your team win.

It just seemed easier to pick up and not get mired down in frustration. The community is much older and has been around for 4-5 years now. There are probably over 30 excellent custom maps available if you get tired of the 30 stock ones.

But you know, like others have said .... you don't really get to appreciate a game until you join a QUALITY server. Just joining any server that plays Dust 24/7 is probably going to give you a bad experience.

I've already forgotten the layouts to maps like torn and storm and stuff.
 
CS is not a bad game if you're playing with a steady amount of players like a regular server and regular players. As most have pointed out, the average CS experience is pretty damn awful so keeping with folsk that play regularly is your best bet for fun in the game.

As for the game itself, Source is much easier to play than previous iterations, almost to the point that it's ludicrous. I went back and played some recently with the regulars I used to play with a few years ago and I was getting kills much easier than I used to with the weapons that were ineffective (although I used it for them for the sheer fun and challenge) back before I stopped. On the flipside, the original versions of CS were awful in their weapon balancing, plagued with some nasty bugs, and a host of other nuisances. Despite that, it was still a fun game because of the pacing.

Question....

In Half-Life/Counter Strike, can friends go online and go through the missions against bots or AI players, without having strangers come into the game? If so, is this feature available in Counter Strike and Half-Life or just Counter Strike?

:lol That's like EVERY Xbox Live enabled game. :) I was playing several games on Live last night, and while I realize that Sunday night isn't going to be the best time to play online, I had the misfortune of playing with a bunch of SCREAMING 11 year olds in Timesplitters FP, dumb hicks in Splinter Cell CT, and then a rather boring game of deathmatch in Doom 3, where the other 2-3 guys just spent the time HIDING in the level waiting for someone to come to them. Yeah, real fun with 4P guys. :/
 
I haven't played Counter-Strike in years, it was pretty fun but made me suffer from a bad case of the "I'll just play one more round" syndrome. Actually, the reason I stopped was becuased I was putting way too much time into it, and to play better games :D
 
I had never really played it up until maybe a year ago when I started playing with GAFfers. That quickly grew old as they took advantage of the fact that I was never interested in devoting as much time to it as they had, and it was really my first crack at the game while they were way passed the curve. Yeah guys congrats on beating a n00b then bragging about it. :rolleyesIwishyouwerehere

It is a blast when it's just a group of guys looking to have a fun time.

this is why we need the rolleyes back ...

And I guarantee you that if you just use gamespy to find the lowest-ping nearby server instead of going for one that you know is filled with quality people you will end up on servers like I described on a relatively consistent basis. As I said, this was a few years ago, so the community is probably a little different now, but it's still filled with elitist pricks who love to do stupid shit like that to newbies.
 
The thing about Counter-Strike that's great is that almost all of the retards that made up the dreaded CS community everyone complains about stuck with 1.6 instead of moving on to Source. It's pretty much like Source got an upgraded community as well as an upgraded engine. I rarely run into the type of lowlife cheating losers you see in 1.6. Go with Source or don't bother, unless you've played other games with similarly terrible communities (Gunbound, every Blizzard game ever created that uses Battlenet) and think you can stand it.

Yes, just password protect your server and only tell your friends what it is. In order to play Half-Life cooperatively with friends, you need the Svencoop mod.
