...Eurogamer: What makes a next generation game?

J Allard: It's a lot of things. Obviously the visual fidelity is the one thing you can take a screenshot of and publish it in your magazine or on your website. People are drawn to that, we're visual thinkers. But, you know, honestly, for gaming, the real magic in gaming is the experience itself and the interactivity. My view is that the visuals, aside from being the thing you can print in a magazine very easily and recognise, historically the visuals shatter the illusion that the creators try to generate. I've played the same level of Call of Duty 2 that we showed off, with all the smoke in the building at the very end. Just the intensity of that experience; I'm no longer looking at poly counts. The graphical fidelity is now sufficient that the illusion is not instantly shattered, and that's where all the other magical components come in. Cutting the controller cord is magic; it just makes it that much more immersive as I don't feel like I'm tethered, it's not dragging across the carpet or across the coffee table. I'm more in the experience. The audio: Kameo's full orchestral score actually draws you into the game even more, and finally the community is the underplayed part; the part we don't know how to talk about yet. As much as and as passionately as I believe in it, I think it's hard to articulate what the community does...

...Eurogamer: You don't expect Sony and Nintendo to do a worldwide launch, do you?

J Allard: I don't know! They've got an awful lot of claims lined-up. What they have claimed versus what they have shown is a very big gap. In order for them to show all of the things they've claimed, they're going to need an eight hour press conference sometimes in the very near future to give everyone confidence that Spring 06 worldwide is going to happen.

We tried to keep the (X05) conference as short as we could, but unfortunately we had a lot of stuff to show. We didn't show Arcade, we didn't show family setting - a concern that a lot of parents have when we talked about getting more Live subscribers on. We've done a phenomenal job of letting you control what your child might be able to do on the system and given you more comfort with the content both offline and online. We don't even get to tell the whole story. We're giving you a whole day here not only to talk to us, but to go and play the games because there's a lot of meat to this story.

I think Sony's talked a lot more than they've shown, and it's hard to line-up their claims versus Spring 06 and working out how they're going to get there. It's very ambitious. I still can't buy a 1080p television set in the US, let alone two of them to enjoy it! I don't have Gigabit Ethernet in my home, so I can't enjoy that, and they don't have vent holes on the side of their console yet so that air can flow through those very very powerful chips, so it still feels like they have a lot of work to do. They have nice movies though! Very nice movies!... [laughs]...

Part 1

I've just played through Kameo - I haven't played a game like that [before]. The closest thing to it is Zelda, but in Zelda you just play one character with one gameplay mechanic throughout the entire game.
Lol.
He always brings it in such an entertaining way.
'They've got that, and we've got it, but we've got it + THIS!!'

yeah, and considering he says he's played loads of games he obviously hasn't played majora's mask ;)

If you see Perfect Dark's co-operative mode, you say 'wow, every level I can play in single player I can now play co-operatively'.

Isn't that... kinda the whole point... of co-op?

Has counter-op been confirmed or denied?

Who's bitching now? Shut up, please. All he did was point something out.

It's a board dude, live with it.
Eurogamer: Are you integrating all of [the new Xbox Live features] with MSN Messenger?

J Allard: Yes, we're doing all of those things to try to increase the community. So between all of those thing where you remove the credit card requirements, you have a free entrée, you have easier trials, and you also have the web aspect so you can start growing the community there and connecting the dots for people who aren’t ready to bring their console online, I think we will overcome the hurdle and get to a critical mass in the different non-English-speaking territories and Europe more generally and really get the ball rolling. Europe is very important to us, not just with consoles, but Live growth as well.

How about this one:

I think Sony's talked a lot more than they've shown, and it's hard to line-up their claims versus Spring 06 and working out how they're going to get there. It's very ambitious. That should get the thread to a solid three or four pages alone.

Good interview, the requisite oddball comment aside.

...?

the nintendo bit is irrelevant. allard's making himself, and xbox, to be this exclusive thing that's already alienating non xbox gamers!

all the interviews i've read of his are making out there's only one kind of rational gamer, an xbox owner. but by doing this how does he hope to expand xbox's market share?

i would like to see 360 gain ground on ps3 but, imo, 360's approach should be more welcoming, and not so aggressively anti everything non xbox related.

Well if you're gonna go relative, then comparatively speaking PS3 has pretty much no vents. Of course 360 has a huge amount.

I love it! Reminds me of the Sega vs. Sony (vs. Nintendo) period of 1994-1996.

I want to go back to the days when Sega dropped golf balls with the DC logo on it in the middle of a Sony golf game.

That was competition.

Show me exactly where Allard is implying that the only rational gamer is an xbox owner and exactly why the hell should he talk up the competition? I wouldn't expect to read positive comments about the 360 from Iwata or Kutaragi 'cause, just like Allard, they are trying to sell their product, not their competitors. This is a freakin' business not some game of grab ass in second period social science. From what I've read, the Xbox people have been no more "aggressively anti everything non xbox related" than the fine people over at Sony have been aggressively anti everything non Playstation related.

He makes a good point about the vents.

:lol - Replace "good" for "retarded" and you're half way there.

from the recent interviews i've read my view my opinion of allard has changed. you like his approach, fine, i don't.

I you have a crazy nutty idea with three friends in a garage that wants to do something "genre-busting" breakout that's going to broaden the audience, you should give me a call and you could do that with a hundred thousand dollars. You could go and invent a breakout kind of game.

:lol :lol So three friends in a garage always have a hundred thousand dollars just lying around? I want to live in america if that's the case!

This is a fucking message board. It's where people discuss ideas and opinions. What spurs conversation is the difference of opinion.

Take your bullshit to about:blank and stay there. It's the perfect board for you, no bitching at all.

it's good that the BR drive is near some vents, but what about the CPU/GPU ?

That's pretty weak, even for you.

1) You have no idea of the internal layout.
2) Ever hear of managed/ducted airflow?
3) Even if this isn't the final locked-in-stone design, do you think placement of the vents is something worth even bringing up, seriously?
4) You're retarded.

"Cutting the controller cord is magic; it just makes it that much more immersive as I don't feel like I'm tethered, it's not dragging across the carpet or across the coffee table. I'm more in the experience."

I guess Nintendo is leading the next gen race with GameCube. M$ should just cancel Xbox 360 since they're already so far behind.

3) Even if this isn't the final locked-in-stone design, do you think placement of the vents is something worth even bringing up, seriously?
Of course. Looking at the PS3, it will be hard to have 9cm fans, it will probably be something smaller -> more RPM -> more noise. The vents are on the side and near a spinning drive, again another source of noise. I dont want to watch a BR movie with the sound of an airbus in the background.

I think J. Allard is just bringing up vents as a way of saying that the design of the PS3 is far from finished and hence the release date of the PS3 will be further away that what Sony say it will be (i.e. spring ). I don't he was in any way that vents is what will will somehow be the key to winning the console wars. :lol :lol :lol

I think he's bringing up vents to draw attention away from the fact that X05 was an abysmal showing.

OMFG not this goddamn vent shit again... people please shut the fuck up about the goddamn vents.

Uh.. But he said it.

In an interview.

Which this thread is about.

As long as he keeps repeating his retard-speak regarding the vents, he SHOULD be ridiculed for it.

He's hip, he probably has an assistant to read GAF for him. Maybe he'll figure it out.

Blame the politician, not the pundit.

What a dumbshit paragraph.

I still can't buy a 1080p television set in the US,

Hello $1500 37" 1080p LCD panels. Right now. Far from perfect sets, but we're likely almost a year away from a NA PS3 launch and the tech will continue to get better. Oh, and that's right, sony doesn't do 4 year console cycles! In 2010 will anyone want to connect their carbon nanotube displays through COMPONENT? Thanks for the choices, MS.

let alone two of them to enjoy it!

Most likely we're going to see the majority of PS3 games in 720p, but with the potential to use the PS3 as a cell-based linux workstation, dual monitor support at 1920x1080 suddenly doesn't sound so useless.

I don't have Gigabit Ethernet in my home, so I can't enjoy that

You're a corporate VP for microsoft, talk about nothing but high technology, and don't have a gigabit lan? Thirty dollars, Allard. Thirty dollars. Or maybe the concept of gigabit lan at sub-astronomical prices is foreign to you, given that $100 usb wifi dongle for the 360.

and they don't have vent holes on the side of their console yet so that air can flow through those very very powerful chips, so it still feels like they have a lot of work to do

*makes jack-off gesture*

They have nice movies though! Very nice movies!... [laughs]...

You guys had some nice movies to show too. Like this one. Floorgirl says hello.

So does this mean all the people who buy the retard pack with its wired controller aren't getting the magic?

No I don't have a problem with him saying it... it's a dumb statement... I have a problem with some of the tards here actually BELIEVING it as some big sign that the PS3 is going to go under more heavy revisions..... I mean that whole paragraph is incredibly dim witted... the fact that people are going "yeah he's right".... ridiculous.

But the point of him saying it is to get some of us believing it. Thats marketing for you.

Yup it's the whole Xbox 1.5 thing... from the other side.

I've just played through Kameo - I haven't played a game like that [before]. The closest thing to it is Zelda, but in Zelda you just play one character with one gameplay mechanic throughout the entire game.

Someone should tell this bitch that Kameo borrows heavily from a little game called The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask(a Zelda game which *GASP* also feature the ability to transform into different beasts, each with different abilities), and in fact three of Kameo's transformations are direct ripoffs from MM's. J. Allard making a fool of himself again? Who would've known!

??? wait, he said he's not sure if Nintendo and Sony will launch worldwide? Lol, what a great line. He's like the Don King of video games.

He meant launching worldwide on all markets at the same time. He was pretty level-headed there actually, he could've said that since they've never done that before, ever, there was little chance of that happening

Allard is making an ass out of himself. You don't judge the physical design of a console based on what is shown at an early trade show appearance. Even if it didn't have ventilation, you can bet the final, fabricated design would.

Yeah really. I cant see them really making the comment and believing it but this is twice now. I'll give them the bennie of doubt and say it's just a joke.
