I don't think i have ever sat back down and re watched a RAW match on the same night
The Brodus Clay intro match was perfect and the best thing i have seen in a while

He did appear to have a real presence in the ring and it sort of reminded me of the Rock in the early days.

Hopefully they give him a longer match next week

I can see the meeting now

Vince: "Hey Brodus, forget the monster heel thing. We're going to make you a funk pimp"

Brodus: "Well Vince, isn't that kind of stereotypi-"

Vince: "We're also going to have you walk around with two sexy women in sequined skinsuits and dance with you in the ring"

Brodus: "Where do I sign"?

Enjoy, I know I will!

Wrestling Observer Radio - January 10th

Wrestling Observer Radio returns today with a FUNKASAURUS edition of the show! We'll talk Raw with the big return of Brodus Clay, the Chris Jericho follow-up, more from Daniel Bryan and the Big Show, and, yeah, another stupid Kane vs. John Cena angle. Also, a bad week for referees, WWE Network changes, TNA Impact taping results, your questions and so much more!

Both my wife and I absolutely love Brodus Clay's gimmick. The mannerisms in the ring. The swagger. The dance moves complimented by power moves in the ring.

Thanks again, Bill. Listening now

So, if I'm starting to like the way things are shaping up for the first time since like... 2004-ish, does it mean my standards have finally fallen that low, or are things actually getting better?

I like Kane's promos despite his somewhat goofy inflection.

I like that Laurinitis has been a brilliant heel in the past month without doing a single overtly heel thing.

I like that Brodus Clay is... whatever he is now. To hell with all those monster promos.

I like that Daniel Bryan is obviously turning heel, but still got a legit (squash) win over a title holder. When was the last time a heel won clean? Dear god please let Bryan continue to win clean.

I like that I have no idea where this Jericho thing is going. Like when he finally starts getting booed, will he be like, "About fucking time, you massive tool bags."

I liked RAW for the first time since... wow, I don't even remember.

The more I think about Brodus Clay, the more I love it.

Here's a guy I had Ted DiBiase-level interest in (i.e., absolutely ZERO). Seriously -- I couldn't care less about him. Ugly, generic big dude. Yawn.

Then last night happened. OMFG last night happened! When they labeled him as the FUNKASAURUS, I was just flabbergasted. My initial reaction was to dismiss this ridiculous character and claim it was stupid (just like what most us jaded wrasslin' fans do). And I did. But with each passing minute, I liked it more and more (his silly dancing, the music, the pyro, his gyrations, his random yelling in the match ("Suplex, baby!" "Not bad!"), etc.) to the point where I went from 100% not caring about the guy to 100% loving him.

I can't even think of the last time this has happened in the WWE, so as much as I hate to do it, I have to give both them and Brodus Clay credit.

I mean, shit, imagine them doing a complete 180 character change with a boring-as-fuck guy like Ted DiBiase. Wait -- that'd never happen. Lightning never strikes twice!

It's a shame because at one point it looked like they were threatening to actually give DiBiase a character and then just turned him into a CAW after three weeks.

The "dancing funky guy" gimmick has been done before, plenty of times, but I don't think it's ever been done with a guy Brodus Clay's size. I guess there's a few elements of it in Viscera's "World's Largest Love Machine" gimmick (whatever the fuck that was about) but not full on.

I assume he's a face, given the gimmick, but he's still having the monster type squash matches, only with dancing added. It's a pretty damn different direction so far, and I do want to see more of where this King Kong Funky gimmick goes.

Also there's a question about Clay, how are his actual wrestling skills?

I've seen a few of his FCW/Superstars squash matches but they don't really tell you anything, are there are full length matches he's been in lately?

Him being able to go beyond squash matches is pretty essential to his longevity. Is he a Vader or a Viscera, basically?

Well Rikishi and "the hip hop hippo" Albert were two guys who were large and danced around.

Hopefully he lasts longer than DJ Gabriel, actually i'm surprised they didn't reuse his entrance theme for Clay as it's more recent and not as well known.

Ho-lee shit, Raw was weird. And awesome.

FUNKASAURUS!

Seriously the funniest thing I've seen in ages. I cannot believe that is his gimmick after all this time. Amazing.

The Cena stuff is alot more lame than it should be. I don't see how peeping Kane is gonna turn him heel by raping Zack Ryder. Am I missing something? That gif is fucking gold though. I just wanna go round posting it in random threads!

I'm gonna ride this out, because I thought it was hilarious, but I have a feeling he'll turn out to be a Viscera.

I remember thinking, during his initial NXT(?) run, that he was pretty agile for a big guy. Viscera was ridiculously obese, and as a result, shit.

The more I think about it, the more I'm annoyed about Ziggler's treatment. As usual, they have a total blind spot when it comes to Cena.

Both Punk, the champion, and Orton, one of their biggest stars, lost to Ziggler when they were distracted. Does Cena? Of course not.

He doesn't even get counted out. Why not count him out, have Ziggler announced as the winner to add to his over celebrating show off character?

Oh yeah, I forgot, why build other stars when you have John Cena? John Cena, who will be young and popular forever and will never be booed by anyway and who ensures the company will never need another star because he will never age or wish to retire.

This bugged the hell out of me too. I was sure Ziggler was going to get the win. But of course, that just makes too much sense.

Although, it's not like some piffling, insignificant matter such as the result of a main event should ever get in the way of high drama, intense acting and tyre changing.

Yeah, that was pretty annoying now that I think about it. I mean they didn't end the match, did they?

It hurts Ziggler's credibility as a contender when he's the #1 contender and going to face Punk at Royal Rumble. :|

Also, did anyone else love the Swagger vs. Punk match? I've been a fan of Swagger since I started watching he just needs to be in matches that don't last 5 minutes.

Having finally gone back and finished ToeJam & Earl III last year, I was thoroughly burned out on the word "funk". Seriously it's like every 3rd word out of the characters mouth in that game.

But if they start calling Brodus "the Great Funkapotamus" then I'm all for it.

Also, Ernest "The Cat" Miller was released on February 10, 2004, just one month short of the "7 year rule"

It was good. Too short. Swagger is awesome though. I was one of the few fans of his title reign, and I used to laugh my arse off when he would address the fans and talk about himself. Hilarious.

Agree with you guys on Ziggler! Going into a PPV, he should have gotten the win via count out. That head stand while he was giving Cena a headlock was outstanding.

and again ... greatest thing about RAW yesterday ... BRODUS CLAY!

Yeah, see this is how I would ideally setup raw:
9-9:15 - Promo
Commercial
9:17-9:30 - Match
Commercial
9:32-9:45 - Match
Commercial
9:47-9:50 - Backstage interview, pre-match promo
9:50-10 - Match
Commercial
10:02 - 10:10 - Promo
Commercial
10:12 - 10:20 - Diva Match
Commercial
10:22 - 10:40 - Match
Commercial
10:42 - 10:45 - Pre-main event promo
10:45 - 11:05 - Main Event

You could fit in potentially 6 matches that have a length of 10+ minutes rather than the usual 5 minutes.

I didn't include backstage skits, but those could be thrown around in, but lasting no more than 45 seconds.

I cant tell if Clay is super happy with his gimmick or he is just happy to finally be on TV.

I wounder if when he is released as DLC for WWE 12 he will have that entrance music. (probably not)

I think he's happy to be on TV and that people were... shocked at his gimmick. Literally everyone thought he'd be the squash monster.

Yeah... I think the crowd didnt know what the funk was going on for the first part of that match because they where just expecting another random monster.

I think it will work out for the better for him.

I mean once the crowd got what was going on they where starting to get into it.

If he keeps talking a bunch in the ring and gets some catchphrases going he could be a fun fan favorite.

Also last nights crowd SUCKED!

Almost as dead as the chris benoit tribute show crowd.

Yeah, last night's crowd was frigging awful. :\

I haven't watched wrestling in months, but I turned to it after getting bored with the BCS Championship. I got to see the Funkasaurus. I was not disappointed.

Just having a thought about the Rumble, obviously the four guys being prepped for the main event right now are Ziggler, Barrett, Cody, and Sheamus.

I would say who needs to win it depends on what Jericho is doing. If he is NOT facing Punk at WM, then Ziggler should win it and face Punk isntead. He would benefit the most of anyone.

If Jericho IS facing Punk, I'm not sure what to do with Ziggler. He needs a high profile feud but RAW is devoid of main event faces other than Cena and Punk.

Barrett and Sheamus would both be deserving of the win. Barrett is ready for the big time, and Sheamus facing a heel Bryan at WM would make up for their match being dumped off the card last year. BOth would be great.

Cody, while he's ready for the main event, I would actually say he shouldn't win just yet, and actually should go ahead with the brother/brother feud with Goldust for WM (who really needs to get in serious shape if he's serious about this feud), and keep his IC title until past WM. After that he should lose it and move to the main event, maybe challenging (and winning) the WHC by Summerslam or so.

Of course they'll probably just have Orton win it, because he is a young up and comer who has never won the Rumble before.

I don't think I've ever been more swayed by a single debut. I didn't give two shits about Brodus coming back and he had me in stitches. Amazing. I hope he rolls with it. We need unique and fun characters for the WWE.

After thinking about it overnight, I'm still very pleased with last night's show. Brodus' debut really was something great. Talk about taking most expectations of him and turning them on their head.

I do think it's possible for someone to be a comedic type character and still be over as a legitimate threat. Hakeem the African Dream comes to mind.

I always hoped they would do this with Santino. There was a period where he was "discovering" his ability to wrestle that I really thought had potential. I like Santino way more than I should. I think his tea party ensured that I could never dislike him or Sheamus ever.

I don't like this new 'like-everything' Wrasslin thread.

Forreal.

Outside of JeriTroll and the first half of the Truth promo, I'm not sure how this was even a remotely okay RAW.

Nevermind the fact that wrestling was so far on the backburner last night, it was almost nonexistant.

I was flipping between RAW and the BCS game, but stuck with RAW in the end as it was thoroughly more entertaining than the most boring championship game I had been semi-watching in my lifetime.

Brodus Clay debut was amazing. Jeritroll. Truth. Ryder trying to change his tire was great too. It was just a really enjoyable show overall.]

Reading other wrestling forums, some people are actually MAD that Brodus doesn't have a monster heel gimmick, like they expected.

Jericho would have field day with these hypocrites. He was around as a monster last year and you didn't give a shit about him then.

He wasn't booked as one then. He got his ass handed to him at Wrestlemania and was left lying in a pool of his own blood.

The problem, as we all know, is that Vince doesn't like to think long term with storylines and where things are going. Anything could change on a dime.

I think it's time for the feuds to step up and get a lot more airtime. The biggest problem is that Cena is supposed to face the Rock as the Champion. So it almost makes the winner of the Rumble null and void challenging for the WWE Title. How Cena is going to get the belt back in the next month or two remains to be seen.

Going by what you said of those wrestlers:

Sheamus and Wade should have a heavy feud going into Wrestlemania, I really hope it culminates nicely there and that Orton doesn't come back and get involved in it. They're two big men and could potentially be a great match.

Cody Rhodes I think will be going against Goldust at Wrestlemania as Goldust's farewell match, which I think will be a great match. I think Cody should keep the IC belt for longer to keep its prestige.

Ziggler is in a tough spot. This, like you said, depends on what Jericho is doing as well as what is happening with Cena and the WWE title.

Throw in the fact that we have Jericho to put somewhere, we could potentially have Jericho vs. Ziggler while Punk does something with his titles.

All in all, I'm a bit lost as to what'll happen between now and then. When is Christian coming back anyway? He'll have to be put somewhere too.

What the hell? People want random angry giant dude #648?

Even if Jericho doesn't feud with Punk I don't think that Ziggler should be in that title match. At that point Punk/Ziggler will be getting a bit stale as a feud, even if the matches are still stealing the show.
I think the best opportunity for Ziggler is to have him and Swagger gunning for the tag titles, then use that storyline to allow Ziggs to break out away from Vickie/Swag.

Rhodes vs Rhodes should happen to give Golddust a nice WM send off.
Taker vs Mr. H's is pretty much guaranteed to happen, though I'd rather see just about anybody else against Taker (D. Brine being the ideal challenger)
I assume Orton will be in the WHC match, which is hard to get excited about no matter how you spin it.

Yeah I think Ziggles and Swag should work on the Tag Team division, they could just dominate it. Win the titles at Royal Rumble, take on any and every team and eventually lose at WM to _____ at which point Ziggler breaks off and you feud with Swagger for a few months.
