Japan weekly sales? (Dengeki info inside though)

And the hardware deficiet for PSP in Japan is easily made up for in the US.

The storm of "great" games DS got in June didnt boost hardware sales anywhere near the level PSP is, and DS doesnt get a game that will sell decently until late August here (Madden wont exactly shadder records for DS, 05 sold less than 200k), after that they wont get a game that will boost sales until late october and Metroid, which even the series on GCN is falling popularity wise.

PSP has enough to easily outsell DS 2:1 hardware and software wise here in the states all the way up til 2006.

Is my monitor broken? Becaus I can't see "U.S. PSP Sales" in the topic title.

Dumbass.

Fantastic sales for the NDS. Sales like this will ensure a steady stream of games from the big japanese companies. That's an issue Sony might wanna start addressing soon, BTW. If their sales continue to lag in Japan like this, their japanese support might start drying up.

By the way for those who are interested, here are the EXACT numbers from Media Create:

1. PS2 Sengoku Basara 88,711
2. PS2 Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 12 57,101
3. GCN Super Mario Miracle Baseball 49,189
4. PS2 Full Metal Alchemist 3 34,429
5. DS Gentle Brain Training 33,715
6. DS Yu-gi-oh! Nightmare Troubadour 31,564
7. GBA Mushiking 31,417
8. PS2 Ape Escape 3 26,985
9. GBA Bleach 20,686
10. DS Brain Training 20,027

You can't spin it any other way. The PSP is selling great for a system with little to no selling games in Japan. It is also selling great in the U.S., but what the hell are they buying it for? Is there any bragging rights at all for saying Midnight Club 3 for PSP, Coded Arms, and Dead to Rights were high sellers?

Less game sales means less support. The DS already had its moment in America late last year and it's getting another one soon. It's why the DS had the best E3 by a longshot (besides PS2).

And it doesn't help Nintendo when they have their free Super Mario 64 DS deal go on for a month and a half at Wal-Mart, where NPD doesn't even count.

For those that want the totals for the top 10...

Software

1. PS2 Devil Kings 88,711 (NEW)
2. PS2 Powerful Pro Baseball 12 57,101 (335,008)
3. GC Mario Stadium Baseball 49,189 (NEW)
4. PS2 FullMetal Alchemist 3 34,429 (NEW)
5. DS Work Your Brain: DS Brain Training for Kids 33,715 (230,877)
6. DS Yu-gi-oh!: Nightmare Troubadour 31,564 (NEW)
7. GBA Mushi Kings 31,417 (368,868)
8. PS2 Ape Escape 3 26,985 (121,612)
9. GBA Bleach 20,686 (NEW)
10. DS Work Your Brain: DS Brain Training for Adults 20,027 (315,891)

I think it's funny people are saying that the PSP is selling well right now without any games even though it's doing worse than what the DS did when it was slumping without any games before the new colours were released. Back then they said the DS was done. :lol

Just again shows how bias people are against Nintendo.

I am Nintendo all the way!

It's not brain training for kids and adults. It's regular brain training and gentle brain training, the latter of which is more about lateral thinking skills.

So, how's fantasy land?

DS is huge in Japan. I was at the Tokyo Pokemon Center store and they sold like 5 of them in the short time frame I was there.

6 if you count my purchase. :D

The PSP has finally gone below 20K for a week.
very impressive ds sales!

hasn't the ds passed the ps2 ytd sales? 1.191 ds million vs 1.185 million [approx]?

If the trend of the whole year continues, PSP just won't stick around 20k. The weekly PSP sales went down from the beginning of the year in a quite frightening continuity(I really hope that the last two words are used correctly, perhaps it's "German english" :) ). In fact PSP broke it's own personal negative record at hardware sales the seventh time in the last 11 weeks(that's a REALLY bad sign!), whereas the DS continues to sell greatly(and just remember: Jump Super Stars launches soon with 300k units "Erstauslieferungsmenge" :D ).
We actually have this existing trend in Japan and I really see no chance for the PSP to catch up to the DS on a longer basis.
In the USA, I think the things are a bit different. Nintendogs - the game that actually changed nearly everything in Japan - hasn't launched yet, August will be a very good month, although we probably won't see very good hardware and software sales from the DS(Nintendogs, and of course also AW: DS, just launch too late). If Nintendogs more or less bombs(I really don't see any chance that this could happen, just look how they do at amazon.com) than it's the time to more or less count the DS off(of course it has other good games out - imho much more than the PSP - but Nintendogs will/shall sell to the non-gamer, to woman etc. and it will probably be a real systemseller).

I think September will be the rebirth month for PSP in Japan.
White PSP+ FF7:Advent Children UMD+ Winning Eleven Portable+ Gundam iwill do wonders for sales.
DS was selling in February/March like PSP is selling now, then new colors and Nintendogs came...

It could either be a breakthrough month for the PSP or the Micro. Sadly, I'm willing to bet that the PSP will sell because of a movie.

PSP US sales in June = 294k
DS US sales in June = 112k

Difference = 182k
Weeks in June NPD = 5

PSP lead per week in U.S. ~ 36k
DS lead per week in Japan ~ 22k

As long as the DS is selling 14k a week in Europe (which is likely enough), the DS is still pulling ahead worldwide. There's too many other unknowns at this point to predict trends. But why don't you crawl back under your bridge and come back when the July NPD comes out. We don't need to have this same conversation in next weeks Media Create thread.

Here is a list that shows how bad the DS did in it's 5 worst periods before Nintendogs came out.

April 11 - 17th : 21,698
February 14 - 20th : 22,363
March 14 - 20th : 22,446
February 28th - March 6th : 25,759
February 7th - 13th : 26,205

Average - 23,694

But for most of the time it was up in between 26,000 - 29,000.

Here is a list that shows the PSP's lowest points after Nintendogs

July 18 - 24th : 19,043
July 4 - 10th : 20,390
June 13 - 19th : 20,416
June 20 - 26th : 20,862
July 11 - 17th : 21,025

Average - 20,347

While I admit, the White PSP is sexy, I don't think it'll have that big of an impact on sales, or at least, not to the degree of Nintendo's new DS colors.

FF7 AC UMD? Are you serious? I think most people would prefer it on DVD.

Winning Eleven will be the best bet for PSP sales, as Gundam isn't as strong as it once was. Not to mention, million sellers like Everyone's Golf and Dynasty Warriors were supposed to help the PSP in the first place, but we've seen how that went.

The PSP is in a real drought there, and while September might have an increase for the PSP, I really think this year is pretty much over. Jump Super Stars is going to lead a massive DS sales explosion, which in turn will boost earlier DS games. I expect to see Super Mario 64 DS, Sawaru Wario, and Nintendogs all back in the top 20 once JSS is released.

Yes that's what I was thinking too before UMD movies have sold nearly more than PSP games :lol Plus it's FF7.

This year is pretty much over for the PSP? :D NUmbers tell a different story.

2005 cumulative sales:
DS 1.189.762
PSP 1.070.529

PSP can still be the best selling handheld console in Japan for the 2005 year.I wouldn't understimate it so much.

*surprised* I wasn't sure I'd see the DS doubling PSP's sales again until Jump Superstars comes out. I would guess the Brain Training games pushed it higher again, but I'm not sure. Can anyone give an idea of the mindshare in Japan between PSP and DS?

Nintendogs:
According to Famitsu data from July 11-17 (it's always a week behind, which is why M-Create data is used so much), Nintendogs finally dropped below 15K for a week. :-( Hopefully it'll pick back up come the fall and still reach a million this year in Japan. :)

He was just referring to this year, so his numbers are fine. However, I wouldn't bet on any kind of a major resurgence of the PSP in Japan (even the White PSP+WE PSP+FF7 UMD in September shouldn't be able to overcome the DS's continuing to grow lead), so I'd be very surprised if PSP "won" this year in Japan.

Thanks, Stopsign, for pointing out that there's a lot more to the race than "this year" in Japan, though. ;-)

If from this week on to eternity DS lead by 20K in Japan and PSP lead by 50K in America, the combined effect would be a 30K lead a week for PSP. From there I guess it'd depend on what your definition of "too long" is, since 30K a week would take PSP over a year to catch up; though of course since everything multiplies hugely in November and December that would bring things closer to the present.

Hardware Predictions:
DS 42K
ps2 29K
psp 20K
GBA 11K
GC 3K

I was spot on with the Nintendo hardware, but overestimated Sony a little. Also looks like the psp is beginning to slide again. By the time September rolls around it could be down to 10-15K a week, with the DS likely to increase even further it's weekly sales, the supposed September revival seems shaky since it's based on FF:AC(available on DVD), Gundam(already available on DS), Winning Eleven 9(superior version will be already out for a month on ps2) and a new colour(these always give a short term boost, long term it's the software). That's compounded by it all being railroaded by the GBM launch.

Man, the negativity in the above is depressing. What we need is the obligatory pic:

Is there a site with a good PSP release list for Japan? I would like when the FF UMD, WE and the new color release(and of course other games, too ^^) just to see how far the PSP could fall the week before the new color(perhaps under 10k!?).

Here's the release list for the DS and the psp up until the release of the white psp thanks to Gamescience. Note I've bolded all the major games(although note that Gundam: Girens Ambition is a psone port). The DS is gonna kick major ass in August. September is gonna see a resurgence of the Game Boy with the Micro, and also Screw Breaker is being released which could be fairly big.

Does there really need to be a "winner"?

There's no real landslide victory in either region (we'll see about Europe when the PSP is released there), and I don't see either handheld kicking the bucket early.

So as long as there are good games for both systems I declare gamers the winners.
