There's an entire color spectrum of noises. White noise is the sound produced when you select a channel on your tv that doesn't come in clearly. There's a white noise generator for Winamp if you're curious. Pink noise is the noise used in receivers to test that each speaker is functioning properly. Black noise can supposedly cancel out other sounds. i think it's used is noise-cancelling headphones. i'm not sure exactly what brown noise is. My uncle made me a 30-minute brown noise WAV that i sometimes use to sleep with. It seems lower in frequency and flatter than white noise.

There's several pages that define the color noise spectrum, like http://www.ptpart.co.uk/colors.htm, but it's not exactly layman material.
