Japanese PSP already sold out online???

For what it's worth, this past Sunday, I was contemplating purchasing a Nintendo DS ( I still plan on purchasing one eventually). However, since I work a full-time, 9am-5pm job, I really didn't have the spare time to scour all the Best Buys and Targets in NYC looking for a store that had a DS in stock. So just for kicks I browsed the GA forums, when a GA poster, posted some new Japanese PSP commercials. I downloaded all of them, and after viewing the one that displayed Ridge Racers in motion, I was sold. What can I say? I'm a hardcore Ridge Racer fan.

In any case, I placed my Japanese PSP pre-order with Play-Asia.com. This will be the first time I've done business with them, however, I hear they're reputable. They were they only online retailer I could find (this was Sunday) that actually accepted pre-orders for the PSP. So I placed my pre-order for the system (@$220) and Ridge Racers (@$50). I figured, what the hell, this is my best chance, since they'd probably be near impossible to obtain at launch.

Today, I check online for some PSP news, and I read that they're sold out all over the place. From every retailer on the net, to all the brick-and-mortar stores in Japan. I check Play-Asia, and it's the same story. Talk about perfect timing. Is anyone else grabbing, or trying to grab an import?

PS: Sorry for the lengthy post, but I seldom post here.

Yes, I'm aware of this as well. Which begs the question: How reliable are these websites that accepted pre-orders for the Japanese systems, and guarantee to ship them immediately following the Japanese launch? I'd hope that everyone who pre-ordered the system would be guaranteed to receive one at launch. Have you, or anyone you've known done business with Lik-Sang and/or Play-Asia?

i've used play-asia a lot, and i find them very reliable, but i doubt they're going to be able to fill all their preorders. there are only 200k units total at launch...how many are they likely to have? in the past i've had to wait for second shipments when i placed a preorder late. in those cases, it was a matter of waiting a couple days. it'll obviously be longer with the psp.

i placed my psp preorder with them almost as soon as the page went up. :D now i just hope they don't jack up the price. only a few weeks left!

some big stores (notably Bic Camera) haven't started their in store preorder campaign, and i'd assume they have a fair number of units on order.

Getting a preordered PSP was indeed an adventure!

Me? I like Play-Asia. They've served me well. As has Lik-Sang.

Oh boy, this is good to hear. I just ordered Super SmartJoy (USB-SNES controller adapter) without really knowing much about it. Anyway, PSP appear to be very popular, but according to a recent Famitsu poll retailers think DS will do better (they are more "excited" for DS).

I know! Only two weeks and change to go, and still no preorder scheme. I hope Sony doesn't fuck this one up.

Well, I placed a preorder with Lik-Sang, as play-asia seems to have indicated that they ran out of pre-orders, considering the PSP hardware is no longer under pre-order status, but "out of stock." I'm sure it'll be hard to get anything from the first batch, but I'm just curious as to how long it'll be before they get to the second batch and so on...if its not long after the initial shipment, I don't mind waiting an extra week or two.

I could've pre-ordered weeks ago at NCSX.com. I didn't cause i figure i wouldn't want to buy two systems again. Recently i heard that there's no region coding or something so woe is me.

i'm waiting for a psp just so i can go on every long line there is, just for the hell of it.

Motor Vehicles ain't got shit on me!

Those first 200,000 are gonna be gone in a blink of an eye. That absurdly low though, I wonder if Sony is fibbing a bit. There'd be riots even for a Sega console if they only launched with 200,000 units.

Sony always and I mean always releases a small amount first to create hype,
stating that there's shortages etc. . . when we all know they have 1.5 Million units in storage.
This keeps the prices high and word of mouth & the media will say "it must be so good, they're all sold out. . ." :lol

That's basically what I was trying to get at. If I already placed my order with Play-Asia prior to them allegedly selling out, I'd hope that I'd receive my system on time. If I'm not mistaken, the limited supply of the PSP systems has been known for quite some time, so perhaps they just sold out of the amount they were expecting to receive. In any case, if I had to, I'd wait an extra week or two. With that said, I'm also hoping they don't try to inflate the price at the last minute. They said they'd sell it for $220, and that's the price I wish to purchase it for.

Thanks for the input guys. I appreciate hearing all of your experiences.

I placed my pre-order before all details were known, but since I could always cancel my pre-order, that wasn't a problem. Well, good thing I did, because looking at those Ridge Racers screens and movies got me hyped up big time.

That's what I'm saying. Ridge Racers is the game that sold me on the system. It looks amazing, even if it were a PS2 game (let alone on a portable system), and is the only game that I find on the system to be graphically impressive (Konami's FPS excluded). The other launch titles appear to be graphically unimpressive, considering the system's power, and artistically boring. After watching the Ridge Racers movie, I immediately placed a pre-order.

I swear, all this RR talk is convincing me to change to that game over NFSU: Rivals. I hope you all don't disappoint me

My reason for wanting Ridge Racers over NFSU is simple, and has nothing to do with the graphics: RRV is my favorite racer this gen, while NFSU couldn't hold my interest for more than 30 minutes. But if you didn't like RRV, I doubt you'll like Ridge Racers.

I never played one honestly, but what the hell, I'm might as well try now

If this is online, I'll have more people to play with it seems

IceBreezy, I agree with what Miburou said. I'm a huge fan of Ridge Racer 5, so it's only natural that I purchase Ridge Racers. With that said, I was also unimpressed by all the NFS: Underground games. I thought they grew old rather quick. If you purchase NFS: Underground, you'll get more tracks and cars, but if the framerate at TGS was any indication, you'll also get a shoddy port as well. I think Ridge Racers is just the better buy. Sure it may have less tracks and cars, but it looks and plays better than NFS: Underground, IMO.

doesn't RRzers have 26 tracks or something like that?

NFSU is a game that I'd want in English. Plus, I'd expect a somwwhat TTT-like improvement from EA since the US is its target market.

If it is as good as NFSU2 I would buy it on day one.
