Jhonatan Blow share his experience getting cancelled by ... everyone!

Yeah, I feel like I've heard enough of this guys voice an opinion for a lifetime already. I'm good without watching this or any future video of him. So…… I'm happy for him, or sorry that happened.

He cancelled himself with all his drama and nonsense.

So at the beginning of the video it sounded like he would cry at the Gamergate boogeyman... But actually not the case, he legitimately got harassed for no reason it seems. And following that he got bullied by 2015 era SJWs for the usual nonsense.

I like the guy.

Never seen this before. Pretty crazy to be upset that people thought your game was great and had great reviews.

"It was just superficial praise, they didn't understand the true meaning of the game".

Gimme a fucking break.

  • He doesn't seem to be crying or whining about anything. He's just describing some experiences he's had and observations along the way.
  • He seems pretty down to earth with what he's talking about here. There are unreasonable people who act like total assholes online, and having them focus their attention on you sucks. He's right about that.
  • People may not like his games, or his voice, or his face, or whatever. But I'm not hearing anything in the content of what he said that seems wrong. Internet mobs are bad. The SJW thing went too far and was filled with know-nothing, self righteous jerks.

Same. Every interview I've seen with him leaves me with the impression that he's very down to earth.

Pretty interesting (the part with his interview at least). I think he needs to be more open minded. He made a special game and was looking forward to discussing about what he thought made it special, but struggles at realizing how it was special/good for others in other ways. This is the real lesson, and certainly the harder. When you think you are good at something, but people in the end reveal to you that you are good at something else, yet you don't really understand how or why you are good at this. And how do you build on this, even if it is counter-intuitive for you as most certainly outside of your comfort zone.

Personal note : I have myself released a game, certainly not the the success he had with Braid lol, but saw some people not getting the final message of the game. So I simply explained it to them, and they were always "wow"ed by it when they understood. But in the meantime, I had the most compliments I think on... the music of the game lol. And I am not a proper musician nor composer, just did everything by ear, on a freaking Game Gear of all consoles. What really matters is to accept these feedbacks positively and build on it, that's my point.

What a pity he spent so much time on making his own coding language. Sometimes he is just too much a coding nerd that just want to code for the sake of it.

I think with age he became less of a dick. In this video he saying interesting and reasonable things about indie games, Steam vs consoles and his experience on his past 2 games.

He hates C++ so much he's rage-creating his own programming language to use instead for game development. Laughable and respectable at the same time. Hopefully it'll be shipped some day.

Dude is based.
Made two great games with a cool sounding third one on the way this year, what's the problem here?
- He's not woke, in an industry dominated by purple-haired loons.
- He and his games are very smart, and he's never been afraid to tell people that.
- He pissed people off by making a programming language instead of a game.
- He was once on a panel with somebody who mocked Japanese games.

Blow at least has/had some talent, unlike Phil Fish.

I just think he should have kept his ambitions in check given the ultra-niche nature of his game ideas.

Braid was overrated and its success was largely a product of the hype machine around "indie" titles when they were flavour of the month way back then.
With the cadre of para-social types the scene attracted I can somewhat forgive him for getting gassed-up, even I have nothing but eternal contempt for that whole disgusting "popular-kids club" mentality where friends were handing out awards to their friends and having their friends in the media make it out like they were superstars and revolutionaries.

J-Blo is the good kind of retard. He's just largely disappointed with the bad type of retard. Remember GAF, the time will come when you have to look at yourself in the mirror and decide, "What kind of retard do I want to be?"

Be the retard you want to see in the world.

he is totally insufferable, so full of himself.
for the last decade re-inventing computer science from scratch, creating a programming language no one will ever use, for his game-jam entry looking sokoban clone, (because reasons).
probably his last game too, with the rate is going.

he can create neat puzzles games once a decade though, i give him that.

I don't know too much about the guy, knowing more about his reputation than his work. I played a few hours of Braid. It was fine, but I felt like I'd seen enough and never cared to return to it. Guess it just wasn't my thing. Didn't get far enough in to see the deep meaning or whatever he wanted people to see.

He hasn't posted here since October. I wonder if this thread will draw him back

I generally agree and I think he gets far too much hate from most people who seem geared to attack him from the start. Most of his political takes are fairly moderate and just don't happen to line up with the in crowd leftist value of the week.

With that said Blow going on a tangent about mRNA vaccines being gene therapy is definitely a step too far into whacko conspiracy theory territory for me. It's fine to have political views about masks / mandates and what we ought to do as a society in response to a pandemic, but he's on some truther shit sometimes.

Yeah, I rolled my eyes at that as well. But if I plot his words on a graph between pure scientific rationality and just how far the craziest of the crazies have become (secret cabal of pedophiles who drink the blood of children in the basement of a pizza restaurant), I can get past what he said enough to listen to the general point he was trying to make.
