Does anyone know when this thing hits retails? I wanna add it to my collection! :D

I didn't even know JW was done with it. Apparently so, cuz it's leaked and hit the torrent scene like a blitz. :lol

May 2nd is the official release, with a bonus DVD.

But who's going to wait THAT long?

Yarr, 'tis a fine soundtrack, indeed!

Walmart will supposedly have an exclusive bonus track included in the copies of the soundtrack that they get.

From The Bits:
In other DVD news today, SonyBMG has announced that the soundtrack CD for Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith will street on 5/3. So why is this DVD news? Well, as it turns out, the CD will include a bonus DVD-Video disc that will feature a 70-minute presentation of some 16 newly-created music videos of composer John Williams' signature themes from all 6 Star Wars films (set to footage from the films) that takes viewers chronologically through the entire saga. Each will be introduced by actor Ian McDiarmid (Senator Palpatine) and will feature the music along with dialogue and sound effects excerpts in full Dolby Digital 5.1 surround. The package will also include a booklet with liner notes by George Lucas and a poster. Frankly, I'm as excited to hear this music as I am to see the film.

That sounds awesome. I wasn't going to buy the soundtrack, but that news may have just caused a change of plans.

Hmm, I'll experience the soundtrack only first from the sure to be upcoming 'Battle of the Heroes' music video. They had one for AOTC and TPM so ... any exact date?
I'm avoiding the soundtrack samples because of the spoilers in the titles. Any spoiler-free opinions so far?

Good score - the best of the new trilogy for sure. Probably like Anakin's Betrayal track the most, but Anakin vs Obiwan is pretty sweet too.

That dvd sounds awesome. I'm definitely going to pick it up.

Someone who has the soundtrack should call that phone booth where they are lined up for episode three and play them a song from it, I bet it would make their day.

The end credits rule.

It is 'maybe' the best of the 'new trilogy' soundtracks - it is nothing to the ones from the old trilogy.

There is nothing on the new soundtrack that even comes *close* to Duel of the Fates, and the best song on it is a medley of old music.

IAWTP, though I do like track 5.

I listened to battle of heroes last night and it did not do much for me. Since I have not seen the movie I have no context for it. The same thing happened to me with Duel of the Fates. I heard it before I saw EP1 and it was ok, but nothing special. After I saw the movie however it became one of my favorite Star Wars tunes. I hope the same thing happens with Battle of Heroes.

Yep, that's the case for most movie scores for me. Very few can I hear and appreciate without first seeing the film.

Yeah...it did nothing for me either. It's not bad, just lacks emotional impact.

I heard Duel of the Fates long before I saw the movie and loved it immediately. There are a couple of tracks on the soundtrack that are pretty good - I don't need any particular context for them. Overall however, much of it just isn't memorable.

Huh... I listened to DOTF also way before the actual soundtrack was released and while I thought it was very Williams-esque, it didn't really sound like Star Wars. In context it works better, but again it didn't and to some extent still doesn't jive with SW for me.

As it stands now, I cannot wait to hear the score in its entirety; what we have so far is really really good, and just chock full of emotional cues; the harmony of the solo violin playing over the Across the Stars love theme in Anakin's Dream is absolutely great, and the Revenge of the Sith and Anakin's Betrayal are some of the best incidental musics in the prequels. I do want a full release of the score as Williams recorded it a la the double disc scores we got for the OT in '97.

I basically have the same feeling for this one as I did for the ROTK soundtrack; it's really good, but I think within the context of the movie, it's gonna be absolutely terrific.

Not sure what you mean by that. What does something "Star Wars" sound like?

This was back in '99 so the perception of what sounds like Star Wars has changed. But back then, I remember thinking that for one the chorus was very strange; aside from the wordless male chorus at the end of Jedi, and the "Nyub Nyub" thing, it hadn't really been used in a SW film. It gave it almost an operatic tone which in some ways is understandable since Williams was influenced by Wagner and Prokofiev-esque techniques in constructing the score, but just when I heard it, it was a bit jarring.

To make my case a bit more vague (in an effort to explain my opinion :),) DOTF is a great piece of music, but unlike most of the thematic concert suites that Williams puts out, this almost works BETTER as a concert suite. In ESB, Williams succesfully blended Yoda, Luke's, and the Force theme constantly, and I just tried imagining that sort of mix between DOTF and any of the pre-existing SW music, and I came to the conclusion that DOTF, while by itself very good, was a singular entity. All of the other Menace main themes introduced seemed to work well together; Anakin's theme, Qui-Gon's theme, The Droid Invasion theme, etc. and the thing about those is that you don't have to develop those themes fully in the incidental work; you touch it, it sounds familiar, and you move on. Williams even did this with the Sith soundtrack, where he briefly touches the "escape from Bespin" motif (from Han and the Princess's theme) for 3 short notes (1:37.)

Again, I'm not sure whether I explained myself or not; I'm not gonna go into the nitty-gritty of it like talking about the different tonalities and dissoannces and shit (since I would only half know what I was talking about anyways.:)) Again, it's a great piece of work, but when I heard it, I was saying to myself "huh... does this really mesh with Star Wars?"

Seeing the elevator doors open, and Darth Maul stare out. Seeing Padme and her cadre stop, and take an alternate path. Seeing Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Darth Maul calmly, without exchanging words with each other, disrobe and prepare to fight... all this while the first notes of Duel of the Fates started to kick up.

THAT'S what made DotF a fantastic theme, imho. There are a few SW themes here and there which were stand alone and only used in very isolated locations, OT and PT.

DotF also made a fantastic music video! Hahahaha. :)

While I don't remember the order, I have no particular attachment to the scene it was used in (contrary to most star wars fans, I found the overchoreographed nature of that fight somewhat dull), but the song itself is simply amazing with or without Star Wars.

I also like the Emperor's throne room music (it's probably my favorite of the entire series, with Duel a close second), so maybe I'm just a sucker for choirs. Well, actually, I know I am.

But it's also about the tune. Duel is easily one of the most memorable songs of the star wars films, up there with the Imperial March and the main theme itself. Battle of Heroes just doesn't have the same impact.

For me, Duel of the Fates will probably end up being my favorite song of the new trilogy, and I doubt context will change that. I'm expecting ep3 itself to be the best of the new trilogy, and I consider ep1 the worst so far, so it's kind of an odd inverse opinion.

Well I've heard them all ... and no i dont feel bad for downloading them because im definitly buying the CD ... but anyways ... Battle of Heroes didnt impress me much but im sure it'll be better used in the movie ...

however ...

The 3 songs that pulled on the star wars heart strings were "Anakin's Betrayal", "Anakins Dark Deeds" and "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan"

"Anakin's Betrayal" just feels tragic ... you can feel something unsettling ... that about all I can say

"Anakin vs Obiwan" is easily my favorite ... it actually takes battle of heroes and puts it to awesome use. The best part of the track however it the how similar it is to the original trilogy. At time it switches from Battle of Heroes to full on Vader vs. Luke from ESB then to the Force theme then back around again with a frantic, epic battle feel. Its just very intense and very very Vader. No more half Vader theme nonsense like in the other prequels, the whole Vader theme is here and its here in force (no pun intended) ... oh my ...

"Anakin's Dark Deeds" ... it starts out dark and slow and seems almost exactly like the music that played in LOTR when someone was in a trance with the ring ... then it immediately picks up and flys out of control into a full fledged epic battle. Choir and everything ... then it settles into slow pace ... at this point ... I cant wait to see what part of the movie this is for because its so tragic and sad ... at times the slow pace almost reminded me of Sean Bean's death music from LOTR ... very epic ... but incredibly sad ... it must be that moment for Anakin ... or I dont know ... but i cant wait to find out

"Enter Lord Vader" is pretty good too ... has a very "oh shit!!! here he comes we're all going to die!!! RUN!" feel to it ... again the Vader tunes from ESB are used toward the end. Feels a lot like a march song ... as if Vader was marchin into someplace ... :)

Judging from the tone and the title of Anakin's Dark Deeds, it's probably when he goes on a rampage and kills a shitload of Jedi.

Btw, where's the music that played during the 2nd trailer? It's not on the OST, excluding the part that's cut out Enter Lord Vader (I think that's the song it's cut from), which plays after Palpatine says "Riiiiiiise" and Vader's operating platform is risen. The whole part of the trailer which plays afterwards has music not on the OST. Is it part of the extra 16th track that's rumored?

Heh, Enter Lord Vader sounds like Ghostbusters in places.
Other than that, the soundtrack really kicks ass.

Fuck i'm wanting the soundtrack more than the damn movie. Is there something wrong with me? I would buy a DVD if John Williams was able to make it with footage from all of the movies in 5.1 that would kick so much ass.

Does John Williams even do any concerts anymore? I'd love to see him in my time before he goes. He's one of the best composers i've ever heard.

All of the music in the two trailers is not from Episode III.

Dude, is that some sick joke?

Created especially to accompany the CD release, the thrilling 70-minute DVD features 16 brand-new music videos set to selections from all six of John Williams' unforgettable Star Wars film scores and has been designed around a timeline that will take the viewer chronologically through the entire saga. Each movement is introduced by actor Ian McDiarmid (Palpatine) and features a spectacular montage of images, complete with excerpts of the original dialogue and sound effects, set to Williams' legendary music which has been newly remixed and remastered in 5.1 surround sound. Williams' principal theme from the new score, entitled "Battle of the Heroes," will be featured in a music video created by Lucasfilm.

Nah, there's a part at the beginning of the 2nd trailer, as vader's platform "riiiiiises," which is directly out of Anakin vs. Obi-Wan
