Saw him at the Hollywood Bowl in 2018. Spielberg was the MC.

He ended it with his usual Star Wars suite, but NOTHING could have ever topped watching Williams conduct the entire finale of E.T. live synced to the movie with Spielberg sitting on a chair on stage watching the monitor and being as giddy as a school boy.

Even though the Star Wars sequel trilogy was a mixed bag I’m glad he got to score one last outing with the Skywalkers: given how many celebrities in their 60’s 70’s and 80’s are passing away recently we really have to cherish his musical genius while he’s still around and capable of producing it.

Ludwig Goransson scores the Mandalorian and has done a good job I feel. But nobody will ever fill John's shoes. As OP says he is the best.

Maybe Hans Zimmer or Ennio Morricone would fill his shoes.... but then again, we're talking about MASSIVE shoes.

Kudos to one of (if not) the greatest soundtrack composer of all times.

He hasnt made a good soundtrack since Jurrasic Park. It's been all hans zimmer since the mid 90s.

Shouldve retired a while ago.
Harry Potter wants to talk to you.

Amazing composer and a living legend. My father was a music teacher and I grew up with Star Wars, the leitmotifs in it and of course Superman and Indiana Jones. Dad even used his compositions at school to teach children the beauty of music.

Williams phoned it with the sequel trilogy sure but Zimmer has just been spraying mediocrity everywhere the last decade. Zimmer scores actively push me away from films these days.

his HP theme is iconic. But the rest of the soundtrack is very meh. The only HP OST I bought was the Azkaban one.

Couldnt disagree more. His collaboration with Nolan in the last ten years has produced some fantastic soundtracks. Inception and Interstellar alone are better than anything Jon has produced since Jurrassic Park.

Schindler's List
Star Wars Ep. 1-3
Harry Potter 1-3
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Minority Report
Catch Me If You Can
Memoirs of a Geisha

are all excellent, imo

Would love to see him conduct live, I get salty every time I see that he holds a concert on the West Coast, luckily I had a chance to see Hans Zimmer live and that shit was insane, I bet seeing John Williams is just a straight heaven experience.

Listening to the Berlin Concert now in ATMOS

Prior to COVID he would always do a few shows every September at the Hollywood Bowl. Very easy to plan a trip with that reliable schedule. Pretty sure he'll do it this year.

I'm actually going to see John Williams in live concert sometime in April. One in a lifetime opportunity!

I guess you're just not very musical, then

There's a difference between being musical and musically memorable. The PT wasn't memorable for me, even the ST I couldn't name a track. As previously mentioned I have an ear for music so that's even worse.

Watched all, remember no music.
Ah that one I do when I hear it alright. Couldn't hum it if my life depended on it though unlike the OT scores.
I remember pretty much everything I hear, whether 'memorable' or not. :p And being memorable is not the only (or perhaps even an) indicator of good music.

Duel of the Fates is indeed iconic, as is Across the Stars

How can you not remember Hedwig's Theme? I could probably transcribe it on paper from memory

Or Double Trouble?

Buckbeak's Flight

etc. etc.

An incredible and touching interview between film composer John Williams and french conductor Stéphane Denève (filmed in 2016).

It's possible to not be impressed enough to care.

I never said I thought he was a bad composer, I specifically said I quickly forgot the themes from the prequel Star Wars. Of course he is a legend. The other films you listed, I didn't do repeat watches on. I'd say that probably played a huge part in that. Didn't even know he did the music on most of them.

Shit, used to walk about the house when I was a kid humming 'Indiana Jones' like everyone else when I was in Junior/Primary school. (Goes 4-12 age).

There's no harm in that. I was never much into soundtracks apart from Star Wars really and the OT's themes. Some people are and that's awesome I simply said "me". I can hear a song on the radio and if it clicks be able to repeat it enough to find it. No ap for that those days. Yahmaha keyboard from Santa, was the best Christmas present ever.
