He knows anything he touches. He created VR (I owned the dk1), he created 3d graphics(well not really buy you know), he worked on rockets... and now he works on AI.
And this means that it's no joke and he will make it happen. He is genuinely a genius.
But seeing how swole he is now... maybe his mind is in the wrong place? why would a geek focus on his looks?

Just watching the first part of that video: how many fields of technology has John Carmack worked in? Video games, areospace, VR, now AI? That man is legitimately a genius.

Yeah maybe you haven't really been paying attention, but.... we're all fucked.

Where do you get your news from?

We got bodybuilder John Carmack before GTA VI

The man has the Midas touch. If he is working in AI, he will surely come up with something special.

Truly one of the brightest minds alive

Imagine trying to shame someone for being in great shape, lmao.

Everyone should focus on their physical health. Lift a weight, you doofus.
Yeah, OP is a dum dum or trolling. There are countless studies that show the mental benefits of physical exercise.

lol being this swole is not great shape. It's steroids. Natural great shape is not this wide

Assuming that everyone that looks buff is taking the same type of steroids seems like it is along the same lines as assuming that any or most AI advances means that we are 'all fucked'. We can better contribute to our conversations about such things with more thoughtful commentary, rather than panic-driven generalizations.

He had a good post about the subject a few months ago

While I understand what he is saying, he's speaking from the mindset of a passionate programmer when in truth we know every company out there is salivating at the thought of using AI to get higher profits by eliminating paid workforce entirely.

In a clean pure world where things like loyalty, fairness and truth are what matter, AI would be used as a tool to enhance the worker's project and lighten his load.

Unfortunately it's time to snap back to reality and understand that the world we've allowed to take shape in front of us for years is built on easy profit, narcissism and selling one's soul to get to the top.

Carmack is the creator who is surprised when his creation replaces him one day... because he was too busy passionately crafting that creation to have realised he'd created his own replacement by doing so.

Exactly. That Jensen CES speech last year was nightmare fuel. AI robot arms cooking food. AI cameras detecting warehouse workers not working fast enough and alerting management.

But as you say I think Cormack is thinking about this strictly as a longtime software engineer.

It's easy to have his idealism and viewpoint when you also have his networth. Things like losing one's job is not something that really concerns people on his level.

Life will be so automated, it mostly can be already. Really wonder what this all looks like in even 5 years.

From a software engineers perspective the current state of AI is exactly analogous to power tools. Power tools didn't eliminate construction work, it made construction massively less expensive and more capable. You don't need thousands of stone masons working for decades to make a modern sky scraper. What AI will do for software engineering will be to massively increase productivity, but like construction the downside is now you need access to the tools and skill to use them.

While everyone is pessimistic about AI, I think it is a pretty large step up in productivity. Yes increase productivity enough there is likely some short term pain, but long term this just means more economic growth and an even larger gap between the have and have-nots.
