Juan Soto signs the biggest deal in sports history. 15 years $765 million to the NY Mets

Yankees offered $760 million over 16 years.

I am glad he turned us down. No player other than othani who pitches on top of hitting like an Mvp is worth $760 million.

He's also a bad defender. Cost us 4 runs in the world series. 2 in the first game alone. He's also a terrible baserunner.

I am glad they didnt get him. he's also at least 30. not 25 like he says. he's maybe a top 3 hitter in the league but not worth that much money.

15 or 16 years is so long to be tied down to one player especially at $50 million a year. At least with Ohtani the Dodgers are only tied down for 10 years which is still a long time, but better than 15. He'll be 41 when this contract expires. I hope for the Mets sake his play doesn't drop off.

Crazy.

All it takes is a bad injury and he's done Check out Anthony Rendon.

He's a player that has power and can get on base by walks, and scores a lot due to Judge HR and protected by Judge. His other seasons on WSN and SDP arent as impressive.

He's still got a rock solid 162 game avg line, but not worth $50M/yr. But like always, key MLB cities seem to have bottomless pockets.

That’s insane, but the Mets are trying to win now and those are probably the only terms Soto was willing to accept. He’s a generational hitter with the best plate discipline in baseball. Doubt the owner of the Mets gives a shit about the long term cost if they can win at least one World Series and get 5 or 6 productive years out of Soto.

As a huge Mets fan, I admittedly have mixed feelings about this. Obviously, he's a tremendous hitter with generational talent who makes the team much better, but that's just an insane amount of money. It's more a principle thing with the thought of paying any one player (not named Ohtani) that much, as the reality is Cohen has endless cash and this really doesn't disrupt anything in the way of the Mets offseason plans to improve the team on multiple fronts. They had $180M coming off the books going into this offseason, so there's plenty more to work with just to even match last year's payroll at minimum.

The Yankees also offered basically the same amount with others in the $700M range, so it's not like it was the Mets alone throwing amounts out there that nobody else was even considering. This is also a symbolic FU to the Yankees - the little brother crawling out of the shadow of the big brother to swoop in and claim a coveted prize, and one the Yankees gave up players for including a terrific pitcher in Michael King, just to see him walk in favor of a crosstown rival a year later.

Bottom line, only time will tell how this plays out. Who knows how this contract will stack up in 5, 10 and 15 years from now? I remember thinking the Lindor contract was absurd but here we are a little while later and that has actually looked like a bargain.

If you're a fan of the yanks, an actual fan from NYC, this is a tough one. To acquire the guy giving up valuable assets for one year and show him mystique, aura, tradition, pride, monument park, da bronx, judge, history, 27 titles*, and then watch him walk across town for the same money....brutal.
When you combine this with that WS 5th inning after this guy was the difference in them going from a non playoff team to their first WS appearance in 15 years and lose him. Not because he doesn't like NY and he wanted a quieter place or warmer weather but because he didn't want your organization. It's as devastating a move that has ever happened.
Real yankee fans are crushed today. If you're from a different state or country or just a jay z fan then you don't get it.

He was never interested in the Yankees. This proves it. I called it as soon as I saw reports that they were both at $700 million and he refused to sign. he just wanted the most money from Mets and he used the Yankees to up their bid.

Now I agree that the yankees are no longer the premiere franchise that everyone wants to go to. Every japanese player wants to sign with the dodgers. Remember Othani told us no back in 2018. Yamamoto used us to up the dodgers offer. It sucks but you cant blame Hal for this. I mean Soto chose the Mets, not the dodgers lol. He doesnt care about winning. he just wanted the biggest paycheck.

Regardless, as much as it sucks to get passed on repeatedly, i dont think any one player is worth that much. Othani yes, because hes a cy young caliber pitcher and an MVP DH. So you can say he's earned 2 $350 million contracts. Soto? He's a defensive liability. he's clutch but there are many other clutch guys that you can get for 1/3rd the money. he walks a lot, great. But there were times when judge was struggling and i was like you gotta go out of the strike zone and be the man. he doesnt do that.

The padres got better without him. So will the yankees. Mark my words.

They still wont win until Boone is fired but i feel really good about this.

He was. They just didn't want to spend the most because they are stuck on their tradition and aura speeches. They traded for him because they thought it would give them an inside track and a discount. Didn't work out. They needed him more than he needed them.he took them to a WS and performed in the postseason. He basically called a shot in a LCS game and put them in the WS.

Players never took discounts to go to there. They always paid the most. Now other teams spend as much and they aren't as attractive. History is history.
He doesnt care about winning. he just wanted the biggest paycheck.
The difference in both offers were negligible. Given the fact that he was there for a year and went to WS the truth is the Mets offer was even closer after the yanks had to give up assets to trade for him.

Soto? He's a defensive liability. he's clutch but there are many other clutch guys that you can get for 1/3rd the money. he walks a lot, great
His career so far is pacing with Ruth, Williams and Frank Thomas. His presence is lineup-changing. And his career numbers at Citi Field are insane.

They won more regular season games.

There is not a free agent in the near future that compares to him. Most of the younger players were locked up with bought out arbitration years. Cohen missed out on Machado and Harper because the first deal he had fell through and then bought the team a year later. He didn't go after Judge because Hal was one of his backers when they were going through the ownership approval process. Ohtani was never going to NY. He turned down the yanks when he was posted. This was the guy and he went out and stole him. If you're the Yankees, you can never let money be a reason. They wanted him back and were initially not prepared to go over $600mil and went $150mil higher and lost out. Now they have to find someone to pair with judge so that they don't waste his time left as a top 3 player and Coles ace years. They just had him. Soto was the guy. Lefty in Yankee stadium who performs in the biggest moments on the biggest stage. Now the Mets get him and they already know he can play in NY when most players face adjustment year/years or never work out. Do you live in the tri-state area?

I grew up in Queens but now i live in Ohio.

I am not disagreeing with you. I just think $760 is a great offer from Hal and if he wanted to play for the Yankees, that shouldve been more than enough. I was pissed at Hal for letting Bryce Harper, Machado and Freeman slip but $760 million is an insane offer and Soto will come to regret it.

I dont think any one player is worth that much. especially a guy who is clearly lying about his age like Pujols did.

P.S He still signed Judge, Cole, Rodon, and took on Stanton's monster contract. We have four players making $30-35 million a year. I dont think Hal is cheap or incompetent. We can still get Max Fried, Bellinger, Burnes, Alonso. I also think Dominguez, Wells, and Volpe will have breakout years. You cant replace Soto's clutch but you can probably field a better overall team now that you dont have to pay one guy $50 million.

The Boss, when he was alive would have gotten at least a Freeman, Machado, Harper, Seager, and maybe even Ohtani when he was posted. They wouldn't even be in a bidding war with the Mets over Soto, because 1 or 2 of those free agents would have signed with the Yanks, and probably no trade for Soto giving up prospects and players. Hal is right about one thing, he said he isn't his father.

Unsung players like Rameriz on Cleveland, and vlad in Toronto are less talented but I think are better every day players. I wonder if hiding away in NY Mets will keep Soto engaged, Lindor I think is cursed, leaving Cleveland looked smart but if I had to decide today Mets fan not winning this upcoming season is their best chance.

Mets made the NLCS this year. Delusional take.
