Next Generation Magazine - When they changed covers from the lovely matte finish to the horrid glossy shit. It was all downhill from there.

Plus they changed the name from Next Generation to Next Gen. Horrible, horrible.

>>>Starfox -> Starfox Adventures.<<<

Starfox was a gameplay disaster that was only even noticed because of novel (at the time) technology. Seriously, it's the worst game Nintendo has ever published. When was the last time you played it?

Actually, it was when Blasto was on the cover.

FF - FF8's orphanage scene
Seiken Densetsu - The whole of Legend of Mana
Contra - Legacy of War
Zelda - Wind Waker
Starfox - Starfox Adventures
Nintendo - Connectivity
Sega - When they went multiplatform
EA - When they released their first yearly update ever for a sports game :P (I can't remember them ever being good)
Squaresoft - Kingdom Hearts
Capcom - SSF2:T

Sonic: every character after Tails
Re4:
Salazar. I mean fighting midgets is fun, but who would really give one that much authority
Zelda: The art style of Wind Waker. Say you love it all you want, but you know you were disappointed when you saw it, and overjoyed when you saw the new one.
Halo 2:
The whole grabbing the bomb and jumping out of the ship cinematic. Lame
Nintendo: N64. It killed the company.
Sega:Third Party
Sony: Relying too much on third parties

A lot of you are missing the point of "Jump the Shark." It's not what product sucked, it's more like an embarrassing moment that ruined a game, franchise, character, or whatever. (Just like Happy Days couldn't recover after Fonzie jumped over the shark.)

Naming the "missing headphone jack" in the Gameboy Advance SP doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Sure, it was a bad idea, but will that mark the beginning of the end of great Game Boy products? Well, that remains to be seen.

A good "Jump the Shark" nominee:

A direct Final Fantasy sequel with J-Pop shit

A bad nominee:

Zelda: Moblins falling Wile E. Coyote-style off cliff
Konami: SURPRISE YOU'RE A GIRLY MAN WITH WOMAN HIPS
Nintendo in general: Peach in hot pants in NBA Street 3, and weird looking Little Mac in Fight Night
Square: Kingdom Hearts

Speaking of Jumping the Shark when the hell are we getting a next gen Happy Days game? :lol

After Grim Fandango, Lucas Arts began to sink downhill. Same with Sierra, no more adventure games just wasn't cool.

Well, that's because the market for adventure games dried up because PC gamers were more into RTS and FPS games. Grim Fandango was an excellent game.

Waluigi Rocks though. he might be pretty obvious, but man he's just hilarious :D

I'd say when they decided to bring back Baby Mario into the side games. Seriously, What the Hell? Hey! Lets destroy what thin line of "continuity" we have! Bringing back Baby Bowser was crap as well, while loosing the Koopa Kids >: (

IAWTP. Baby Mario & Luigi totally suck, but Walugi is freakin' hilarious. I'd take him over Wario any day. He's far more pathetic than Wario, and therefore funnier.

Most of the examples in this thread are stupid. You guys are reachign way too far to find "jumping the shark" references in gaming. Mario with a water pack.. okay there.

>A direct Final Fantasy sequel with J-Pop shit

Agreed 100%.

For some people, MGS2:
-when you realize that the main guy you play is NOT Solid Snake
-when the Colonel starts going crazy in the end

I didn't mind, but I'm sure a lot were not happy about that.

And of course...
Halo - flood
Halo 2 - flood again (when does Bungie learn we dont want flood shit anymore!)

Mystical Ninja Goemon series - PS2 game with terribly redesigned characters, followed by GBA game with even more abhorrent redesigned characters - both equally sucky in gameplay. Upcoming DS game may revive franchise.

Mario Sunshine - not because of water-pak, Mario games traditionally have thrown in some new device/suit adding to gameplay. Mainly because (save for the bonus stages) it didnt feel like a Mario game due to lack of familiar characters. And I hope those things with palm trees on top their heads quietly return to Nintendo's stable of forgotten characters.

Zelda never jumped. The next game in the series is possibly the most anticipated Zelda game to date. Series is strong.

I think another thing to be cognizant of here is that people didn't sit and watch Happy Days that night, see Fonzie jump over the shark, then look at each other and say "Well, it's over." It's only after a period of time has passed by and you know the series has irreversably gone to shit that you can look back and say where it jumped.

Considering how awesome MGS3 was, it didn't jump the shark when Raiden took his Snake mask off. Maybe it tripped over a largemouth bass. But it got right back up again.

Maybe if the next Mario game has all of Sunshine's faults, but more so, and they never make another good one then you can look back and say "Well, the decline started there." But in that there hasn't been a new Mario game since Sunshine, you don't know whether or not Nintendo's taken the complaints into account. (Which you have to figure they are considering what happened to Celda.)

Video Gaming General: Introduction of PlayStation/End of solid state memory storage of video games.
PC Gaming: Quake 2
Turok: Turok 2
Atari: Release of Jaguar
Amiga: Release of CDTV, then CD32 (yes jumped the shark twice!!!)
3DO: Trip Hawkins Birth

Silent Hill 4 :

It jumed of the shark when you had to replay the entire set of levels again AND escort a broken AI character . As a (once) really obesssed, crazed, fanatical person of the series, this was completely dissapointing . You keep playing though, hoping for some kind of payoff, storywise or ... anything that was remotely unique or innovative . Never comes .

Lets hope the higher ups at KCET pay attention to the pitiful sales of SH4 and realize this is NOT the team to be working on the next generation SH .

What happened ... rushed ? Lack of Masahiro Ito & Hiroyuki Owaka ?

SH2 AM KING

Xenogears: the introduction of chu-chu
Hey, I liked those little dudes, they rocked! :D

Nintendo - Connectivity
Agreed, everything I've seen come from connectivity looks like it would be 10 times better online and twice as practical.

FF - FF8's orphanage scene
That was weird, but I did love how the personnas of all the characters remained intact. Like Siefer still pushing Zell around, I loved that.

Mine? LoK Defiance pretty much did it for me with that franchise. That game totally sucked out all the cool mysticism surrounding Kain and the reaver. One of the most ancient and powerful blades in the world, and I have to wack a mindless bushmen with it nearly 15 times to kill him. Not to mention the whole game was just shitty period.
