MGS4 moved 186,000 more units than 360..thats a nice chunk!
If MGS4 wasn't their biggest title of the year, I would say things are looking up for them..

Resistance 2 might be just as big

It is. GTA:SA moved over 20 million on both the PS2 and Xbox. We can safely assume the game won't get ~10 million more in sales at this point, which means it's going to have a steep drop off in sales (as in, millions less than the last game) after steadily increasing in sales from GTA III to GTA:VC to GTA:SA.

As far as we know, Resistance didn't even sell 1 million in the US. And it was a launch title. I definitely think the sequel will see improved sales, but it's not bigger than MGS4.

In my opinion, there's really only 3 stories here that stand out:

1 - MGS4: Very surprising to see it come out that strong and simultaneously pick up hardware sales as much as it did. That's close to the MGS3 LTD in the first month, on an install base that pales in comparison. A great success for Konami all around, and a much needed breath of air for Sony.

2 - DS Hardware: Okay, seriously. What the fuck. We are but simple men, and this is the Dread Cthulhu. It hasn't even hit $99 yet. When it does... well, "Cthulhu fhtagn" as they say.

3 - Wii Hardware: Finally, the Wii has taken the top billing in the NA market thus fulfilling the contract with Lucifer and sealing the fate of "hardcore" gamers everywhere. It's going to be interesting to see how MS will spin this angle in the PR, though I suspect it will simply fall back on "we're not competing with them". Nintendo says the same, though maybe not for the same reason.

As for GTAIV, it actually doesn't surprise me to see it fall out of the top 10. I didn't expect either version to remain there unless software sales were particularly disappointing, and there were too many releases in June for that to happen. Considering GTA is now sharing the wealth with both the 360 and PS3, it would take pretty sizable legs for either version to break into the top 10 with the split between them being as close as it is. At best I figured the 360 version might take the 9 or 10 spot, but with the numbers for those spots being as they are it doesn't really surprise me it has slipped. I haven't seen the extended NPD listing but I imagine the two versions combined still probably hit around 300k.

Then it comes down again to the question of why is anything non-first party not multiplatform. Presumably if it sells enough to make the developer happy, moves enough hardware to male the console company happy, and throw in a few incentives, a game becomes exclusive.

If increased sales on multiple consoles was all S-E was ever looking for, their games would have been multiplatform years ago.

PS3 fans seem to be mostly the same type of fans of 360 so genres that aren't big sellers in 360 probably indicates what types of games will work on PS3.

I honestly do not see it pushing a lot of HW for the month at least by US NPD standards and certainly not what we saw for June NPD. There were so many factors for this month, you had the Blu Ray deal, MGS4 and the Limited Edition 80gig bundles that seem to have sold a majority of the sales for June NPD. MGS4 was the biggest gun for the year on the system.
