'Renowned horror manga author Junji Ito (Gyo, Uzumaki, Tomie) has no shortage of excellent works to adapt into anime, but other than Gyo his stories have primarily served as inspiration for live-action projects. That's about to change according to Asahi Shimbun's Junji Ito's Haunted House site, which revealed that his manga is set to make the leap to anime.

The picture on the site doesn't just focus on one of Ito's works, and includes imagery from Tomie and Slug Girl, among others. With that in mind, maybe it will be an anthology rather than a single work, which would be amazing'.

Well, safe to say I'm looking forward to this. Need some deliciously vile anime!

A Junji Ito horror anthology anime series is a perfect idea.

Imagine if we got an animated version of The Enigma of Amigara Fault.

Uzumaki is one of my favorite Manga's of all time. SPIRALS!!!

But an anime version? Will they be as violent and weird as they need to be? I'm dubious about an anime version.

Well, we have that live-action version. I saw that before I read it, but it was fucking weird and trippy shit still.

Did he have a manga where there was a mountain with holes in it in shapes of people? That was a very strange manga, I forgot the details though.

Adaptation of some of his short stories. Hell yes!

EDIT: Do I see the guy from "Long Dream" hanging on one of those face baloons? HELL. YES!!!

In the top right-hand corner that's Souichi's
wife, Miss Fuchi,
right?

I wonder if they'll adapt multiple Souichi stories how they'll present them considering how weird the connection between the
adult and child
stories were. If they wanted to they could present them linearly.

....ehh. It'll probably be difficult to adapt that style of shock horror to an anime.

Would love to eat crow, but I have little faith in this.

If they really wanted to do his works justice they would make a black and white version too.

I'm both excited and dreading to see this. No other artist has scared me as much with his work.

Excited, but also worried they'll either water it down too much or over-do the violent parts. Hope they handle it with some nuance.

Man I'm so in for this but I have to wonder how they're going to translate the...visual style effectively. His stuff is so effectively stark in black and white pen

The starkness reflects his nihilist themes well but the use of color can open up a whole new world of horrific angles to his existing work. I'm picturing what Hellstar Remina would look like in color.

Anyway, this is amazing news. Junji Ito's work is legit amazing.

Remina could definitely be better in color

But I want Uzumaki!

I love Junji Ito.

I don't really like manga, but he's fucking great.

Long Dream, Uzumaki until it gets kind of stupid, Hellstar Ramina.

I've read most of his works to be honest.

YOOOOO

A horror anthology series based on Ito's works would be one of the dopest things mankind could possibly produce

I'm in

I'm so in

It makes sense too because Ito is primarily known for horror anthologies, not long volume-spanning stories.

I get the feeling that would work better as an old school, gritty adaptation in the vein of 90's anime films than a modern one. Either case, I'm in.

Also, I just googled some Gyo jifs and I swear to God I don't remember the original material being so full of tentacle rape/fan service.

OMG, I don't know how to feel. On the one hand, I'm excited. I love Ito's stories. OTOH, anime adaptation tend to be inferior in terms of design....

OTOH, Mushishi seems to be okay so maybe this will turn out fine too. But I want them to cover the entire Uzumaki stories. ALL of them! Then let's go to Hellstar Remina.

The dream is that this is hand animated and drawn like something like AKIRA, that wonderful gritty aesthetic and attention to detail as well as the character designs.

Ito's work lends itself well to 80s/90s anime aesthetics that they should go full bore with that and depicting the horrors/transformations from the manga.

I just want to see shit like this:

In color and animated in languid Lynchian shots.
