My mother who's been an adult longer than I've been alive chimes in "Oh, I've never even gotten a summons!"

i gotta go tommorrow. Fuckin sucks. I've got to figure out a way to get off their "list". I should tell them im a racist. Or have ADD. Or am a racist with ADD.

My dad says bring a book because I'll probably sit around for an hour or two until they tell me to leave. UNLESS...

Just tell the judge that you hate all women and ethnic groups.

My neighbor did that and they enrolled her in a class for racial equity and tolerance. She didn't have any other option to contest it either. ^_^

Isn't that against freedom of speech and opinion? If you tell the government you don't like ethnic groups, as long as you don't hurt anyone, you should be legally allowed to have that opinion.

If your state opposes the death penalty, say you support it, and vice versa. You are not in tune with your state laws, so you are unfit for duty. It should work.

If that's not the type of case, then dress REALLY REALLY SMART. Act REALLY REALLY SMART. Lawyers don't like smart-types on the jury; they know too much and may sway the vote against them, whatever the decision may be.

So be smrt.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Like I have always said, if it involves a black person, just so "oh I'm so fond of niggers!" You'll get pegged as a racist on a technicaityh, but at least you had something positive to say.

Haha, seriously.

Honestly, I'd be very interested in being part of a jury once. I'd like to see how some of that works firsthand in real life.

Being on the Grand Jury is where you do all the interesting stuff. My G.J. term lasted a month. At first we had cases to listen to every time but as the month went on it was only every other day or so. They'd call us and ask if we could come in the next day to listen to a case. If we felt it had enough evidence, we'd make sure the charges weren't too severe and aprove it to go to court.

We had one road rage case once. Teenage girl pissed off a motorcyclist so he was following her really close down a road. She claimed that she "tapped" her brake to scare him, but he ended up rear-ending her, flying off his bike, and the result was his paralyzing injury. We had to listen to his girlfriend's account of the story (even if she wasn't even there) and she was saying she was going to break up with him because she couldn't stand being with someone who was a vegitable. No idea if the guy ever recovered.

You see a lot of stuff on the Grand Jury. Rapes, child porn, spousal abuse, etc.

The new definition of hell...."reprogramming."

Who the fuck is the govt. to tell me what my opinions are on people and how tolerant I can be?

Don't know, we didn't sit in on the case during the trial. We just determined if the case had enough evidence to go to a full jury trial.

The teenage girl wasn't completely telling the truth. We could tell she didn't just "tap" her brakes and her horn to give him a warning, but we could tell she was scared of the guy who was following her. She initiated the whole conflict by honking her horn at him because she felt he was driving "too slow". It was the fault of both parties; the motorcyclist could of just ignored her but he decided to turn around and tailgate her.

I'm definately more cautious about honking my horn after having to sit in on that one ;P

I got paid by my employer for taking the time to be in the Grand Jury. Even if G.J. was only 2 hours long for a particular day, my boss had to pay me my full 8 hour shift.

If you get Jury Duty, Grand Jury is the place to end up

I'm sure they do it only to fuck with people who waste their time with the "I'm super-racist!" dodge to get out of jury duty. If it's anything like the similar sounding thing my friend (works as a sheriff at the law courts bdg) told me about it's a seminar used on ppl who are guilty of minor hate crimes and stuff. The government's not going around signing ppl up who send in letters to the editor complaining about immigrants, but they will use it on folks who lie in court about being an idiot to avoid their civic duty. My friend says it's hilarious - usually 3 or 4 super embarrassed folks who thought that saying 'I hate darky' would get them out of jury duty and a few stupid ass teenagers who huffed some paint thinner and knocked over a couple of tombstones at a synagogue or something.

I wish I'd get called for jury duty, but I'm not 100% sure I wouldn't just get an unpaid leave from work I'm not sure how that works here.

I got called in for jury duty before. It was just the initial screening but if I got picked, who knows how long you're gonna be there. I've heard many stories of staying there for 4+ hours to get interviewed and there are subsequent screenings a few days afterwards. They give you $3 Canadian for lunch.

So anyways after receiving the letter I just called them and said I had exams, although they were 2-3 weeks away in reality. I had a letter typed up explaining my case which I had to fax to them for proof.

But it was pretty easy, without questioning me, she just said it was okay and I didn't have to show up and asked to fax the sheet. She also said I wouldn't be qualified to be selected for another 6 years :D

you can get fined and/or go to jail. I remember my dad forgot to go once, and they gave him a summons to go before the court in Sacramento (the capital) or some shit like that. My mom though, just called them up and said it was her fault cause she forgot to give him the jury summons when it came in the mail, and they gave him a pass.

You never know these days :D

Two hours sitting in the Alemeda County Jurors room filled to the brim with 300 other people and I get to leave, woohoo! They told as at the beginning that 80% of the people were going to see the inside of a courtroom, but one of the cases settled. The people in the last call had to wait until 2 PM to even start selection though (they called them at 10:30), hah!

In reality, most likely nothing will happen if you don’t show up. The reason why they give you grief if you call to try to explain why you can’t come is, well, if you care enough to call you care enough to come.

And it’s really horrifying to see so many people trying to get out of doing their civil duty. It’s important guys.

Well they do issue a warrant for your arrest if you don't show, but I guess if you never get pulled over or anything you're good!

I did federal jury duty for 3 weeks once. It was pretty fun. I made lot's of money too. My job had to pay me full pay and I got paid for the jury duty and travel. It was pretty interesting. It was a big consipracy to sell and distribute cocaine case. The defendant actually flew in a lawyer from California. The guy was wearing armani suits and had a ponytail to his ass. It was a pretty interesting case involving beeper codes and even had some drama where a witness got caught lying on the stand. During deliberation women were crying and people were always yelling at each other. We diberated for like 4 days. The pay for federal jury duty was much better than normal jury duty.

I had to go 2 weeks ago. Waste of time. Had to go for 2 days and didn't do shit, literally. On the bright side, I got to put some serious time into some GBA games and I found one of my friends there, who was actually assigned to same case as me

They dismissed us on the 2nd day cause the two sides settled to an agreement. Complete waste of time

I actually got out my summons a few weeks ago. The summon I had on the back had 2 lists one for diaqualifications and one for exemptions. The exemptions had things like school, taken care of someone etc. The disqualifications had list with being felon, non-citizen, and mentioned something about not being mentally sound and no good morals. So what I did I checked the box with no good morals and faxed it in becuase it gave that option. Didnt have to show up or anything.

Wow, I was reading this thinking it was a new thread and was momentarily shocked when I saw my own reply :lol

Anyway, not sure if it's unconstitutional, but she went to class for claiming her racial intolerance. Maybe I should ask her to get more details because I'm only recalling this information from what I was told by my mom. There's a definite possibility she could have remembered wrong. Jury duty is a requirement unless you have a valid excuse for exemption -- perhaps they saw the class as an acceptable alternative for 'replacement credit' and she happily obliged? Who knows lol ^_^

All day, and NO - they will confiscate it. Don't bring a cell phone either. The last thing you want to do is get a contempt of court fine when you're not even the one on trial. Don't try sleeping through it either.

More than likely they won't do a damn thing. Unless you live in a small town where they need jury members, they'll just cross your name off the list and send you another summon a year later. Trust me on this one.

What the hell kind of logic is that?
Since when is having the common decency to call and explain you don't have the ability to do something a sign that you can?
