Just Cause 5 Was in Development at Sumo Digital, But Got Cancelled

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

The information comes from the profile of a former Sumo Digital employee, who worked as the Vehicles Feature Team Lead on the project from 2021 to 2023, before it was ultimately canceled.

The mention of Sumo Digital is particularly intriguing, as Avalanche Studios has traditionally been the primary developer for all main games in the series to date. This could suggest that Square Enix, being the owner of the IP, opted to outsource development to Sumo Digital. Alternatively, it could just indicate that Sumo Digital was collaborating with Avalanche or another studio on the project. However, given that Avalanche has been focused on developing the co-op title Contraband since 2021, their involvement in this new entry of the series seems unlikely, although this is purely speculative.

I had an absolute blast in Just Cause 3, blowing up anything red (at a cinematic 12 FPS) on my Xbox 360

Would love to see a modern version of that

On and this. We need more of this:

Sumo was working on this? Why not Avalanche?

I liked all of these games as brain dead action games that let you get weird with the tools. Like attaching guys to missiles with grappling hooks.

Hopefully Avalanche come back to the IP well into the next generation. The interactivity and simulation needs every bit of hardware juice it can get; and it'd allow them to really push the boat out.

"My naaame is Bolo Santosi."

I will never be able to erase that voice from my head, it's permanently etched into my memory.

Holy fucking shit, you're not gonna believe it but that was the exact soundbite I was thinking of when I made the post, lol.

"I fight for the peopleeee of palauuuuu" or whatever the name of the place was.

Wait JC3 was on 360 and PS3?. Werent the XB1 and PS4 versions already pretty terrible for frame drops?. Cant imagine how bad the game must of been on 360/ps3. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Honestly I'm in two minds about this.

Just Cause is great fun.

But when I was choosing my last JC game I went for the cheaper and more complete 3 rather than 4 because I wasn't aware of any notable evolution in the gameplay. I may or may not be wrong, but that's the reasoning at the time.

If 5 was just more of the same it might not have done very well. But I'd have enjoyed it if I played it, for sure.

JC3 was a great time. The wingsuit mechanic was perfect for the silliness of the whole thing. Its no masterpiece but I spent a ton of time just flying around and enjoying the scenery.

Terrible final boss fight though and JC4 was an abomination in comparison. This series should remain over.

For me the series ended with JC2. It was incredible fun to explore that map and destroy stuff.

I hated most of JC3 (plus it ran horribly on PS4) and that resulted in skipping JC4. Wouldn't mind if the series got a complete reboot with Sumo Digital or some other studio behind it.

Just Cause 2 was the definition of a fun sandbox game back then. Also dat cuda water on PC 🤌🏻

It was a shame what happened to the franchise. A next gen (well, current gen) Just Cause could have been amazing.

Are 3 and 4 really that bad?

Weird dev choice.

I have both 3 and 4 on PC, came in bundles or for free at Epic. Are they any good? Played a bit of 2 on 360 and it was preety dope.

They just said they cancelled the game, probably the last we will ever see of the franchise man what are you doing "we need more of this", it is over

Awww shame I would have really wanted to see what Sumo was gonna bring to the table.......maybe they could have captured the magic of Just Cause 2.

Just Cause 3 and 4 pretty much killed the series for me after Just Cause 2 was one of my favorite Xbox 360 games.
I dunno how they regressed with each subsequent entry remembering that the jump from Just Cause to Just Cause 2 was absolutely massive.
Some of my earliest gifs were actually of Just Cause 2 because the water was so impressive at the time.

^Forgive the quality and optimizing as I said they were some of my first gifs.
I really should start making game content again.................

I was actually upset when I 100% the game because I needed more.

I think the series was running out of ideas and part 4 wasn't that much fun.
I guess the team must be up to their eyeballs with Contraband and rather they finish that off and also never a fan of developers outsourcing their IP either, though to Sumo's credit they did a ace job with Crackdown 3 (single player)

Man, I have vivid memories of JC2 being so amazing back on the 360. Terrible voice acting and all.
JC2 was one of the best open world ever made imo it seemed to incorporate every type of biome in a seamless way, was a ton of fun playing the combo grappling hook/parachute for the first time in my case, and the B movie feel was on point

Good. I have to assume JC3 to JC4 sales trended downwards.
And mechanically so sound it needs to run 'flawlessly' to highlight its main selling point. Grappling two helicopters together is not fun at 25fps.

Will they ever come out with Contraband ? anything more than 4 years means its in for a rough time ahead with huge sales expectations.

Endless fun in JC3:

That said, JC2 had a much stronger identity. Remember playing that 30-40 min demo to death on PS3.

2 was so great. 3 was pretty good as well. WTF did they do to 4, it was boring. Maybe a new studio would have turned things around. I guess we will never find out.
