Some more impressions would be nice.
It's a pretty basic game... girl dog gets dognapped, guy dog (you) go on a quest to save her. Each level has very similar objectives, but the locale changes (ie, one guy wants you to find batteries for his amp, but later on you find pieces for a snowman, etc).
To complete certain objectives, you switch to a first-person "smellovision" that not only lets you follow footprint trails to find items, but also allows you to see different colored "scent" clouds which you collect in order to complete the levels. Finding all of a certain color will either give you a bone (you collect bones to increase your "status" in the game), or it will trigger a mini-game between yourself and another dog, either a
- digging contest: dig x amount of holes before the other dog does
- peeing game: pee on corners of various grids to claim the most territory within a time limit
- tug of war: you know tug of war
- doggy doo: it's like a game of Horse, but with moves your dog can do. The other dog pulls off a string of moves, then you have to copy it. Successfully completing these unlocks new "beg" moves, so you can get NPCs to feed you with treats.
Some of the objectives have solutions that are kind of tricky to sort out at first, but it's never frustrating. As far as free-roaming goes, you can bark and growl at people, pick up rats and cats and throw them (even into traffic, though they won't get hit), and do poop-related things (poop on a hill, and it rolls down the hill; poop and then take control of another dog, and you can make him carry your poop in his mouth, that sort of thing).
It's by no means a killer app or anything, but I had fun just playing a game that wasn't taking itself too seriously and just did its thing. It's fairly short (I haven't played it every day, but I think I polished it off in about ten hours), but it's a nice ride while it lasts.
