The Twilight Samurai is absolutely wonderful -- definitely one of the best films to come out in America last year. I am quite excited about his new film that's hitting the various festivals now.. another story of a humble samurai.

That's a damn fine pile of DVDs right there. You're going to love the George Smiley minis.

I heard the picture quality is not that good on the R1 dvd. Can anyone confirm this?

I've seen Prime Gig, it's a decent movie, if a bit predictable (the only reason I can see anyone saying anything bad). Gives off that Glengarry Glen Ross feel, and the acting is pretty good all around. I certainly liked the movie more than Confidence, which is another similar movie.

Not for a while. Tartan Films is releasing it theatrically in the US in a couple weeks (March 25th in NY/LA). So some time after that.

Well... lets see. Seems like the Digital Bits posted their DVD awards today! How convenient! Surely such a fine film would be awarded many "Bitsys," right?

...

Yup.

The Twilight Samurai (Empire Pictures) won:

WORST DVD - OVERALL

"One of the best samurai films to come out of Japan since the glory days of Kurosawa and Mifune, and this is the best disc Region 1 viewers get? Mediocre, non-anamorphic video, a flat 2.0 audio track leagues short of what it could be and a pair of interviews comprise the sum total of this blown opportunity. Empire needs to start over from square one and produce the kind of special edition DVD that The Twilight Samurai deserves.

THE RUNNERS-UP

None. In terms of its mediocrity, The Twilight Samurai is in a category all its own."

WORST DVD - STANDARD EDITION

"There's a bare minimum of requirements a standard edition DVD has to meet in order to impress us... and The Twilight Samurai failed just about every one of them."

WORST DVD - VIDEO

"Are you sensing a pattern here? Empire's The Twilight Samurai looked like it was mastered from an analog videotape in letterboxed widescreen only (shameful given that non-U.S. versions of the film on DVD feature a high-quality anamorphic transfer)."

WORST DVD - SOUND

"Okay... the disc includes a Dolby Digital 2.0 track in the original Japanese. It's solid if unremarkable. But how hard would it really have been to re-mix the film in full 5.1 surround? Not too hard apparently - international versions of this film on DVD feature both Dolby Digital and DTS audio.

THE RUNNERS-UP

None really come to mind. Certainly, none were more disappointing than this."

MOST DISAPPOINTING DVD

"We're not even going to talk about The Twilight Samurai anymore."

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/bitsy/6th/page2.html

Yeah... so I'd say Empire might've bungled that DVD release. Just maybe. :lol

I've been dying to see this, too.

I figured as much. I guess I'll go with a different region for T.S. Anyone have any recommendations as far as Twilight Samurai goes?

Edit: Shit I just read the link to the digitalbits awards and they mention one of my favorite movies, Charley Varrick and it got the runner up to the Worst DVD Standard Edition. Another fucking studio travesty.

A pic for those not in the know

Harry's monthly picks always lead me into buying at least a few DVD's I had never heard of. Harry's March Picks

Usually I stick to the Criterion Collection discs, just because I am afraid of getting something of questionable quality... Just picked up "The River" today based off of the new March pick list.
