After hearing so many good things about this game and its story, I buckled down and got it off Ebay. Oldskool, big box version. As someone who mostly plays console RPGs, any thing I should know before trying the game? BTW how long is it about? Please god don't let it be one of these 150+ hours Baldur's Gate kinda deals :P

Should've done more research then!:)

I was considering installing Fallout

Should I play the first then the second? Or just go right to the second.

doesn't matter much with Fallout, since both are fantastic. If you want a more connecting story-arc, start with 1 first.

Personally, I started with Fallout 2 and it didn't hinder my experience at all going back to Fallout 1 next.

Its definitely not a 150+ hour game, probably take 30 - 40 hours depending on how thorough you are. Its an amazing game, enjoy.

Yes... yes, you did.

My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I'd say the game takes 40 - 50 hours to complete, assuming you aren't using a guide and you aren't rushing to finish.

I had this game, but only played it for a couple of hours before losing patience. I don't think I have it in me to play an RPG ever again. :( But is the story actually good? It seemed like standard fantasy fluff, but does it get better as the game goes on?

isn't KotOR the best RPG? (maybe just the best console RPG)

No and it never was. People who never played a PC RPG before and suddenly got KOTOR on Xbox will tell you it is however. (same with Morrowind, Gothic owns Morrowind)

For the really, really BEST Western RPG try one of these:

1) Deus Ex
2) Ultima 7 and Serpent Isle
3) Fallout 1 or 2
4) Planescape OR Baldur's Gate 2 + Throne of Bhall

All PC games that's why console people don't give a rats ass about them.

KOTOR is good if you haven't played BG2, Planescape or Fallouts before.

Well, it has the best STORY in a Western RPG -- or any RPG, period, although that's kinda damning with faint praise. The game takes about 30-40 hours to complete, and there's almost no grind to speak of. Be sure to put lots of points into WIS!

I never got to play this game, though I really wish I had. I'm pretty sure it's a very long game in the vein of the Baldur's Gate series. When it first came out, I saw some quotes from the developers stating that the game had more text that an average dictionary. I actually like to read through my RPGs. I've heard nothing to suggest that the dialogue is anything but excellent.

I've been trying to play through BGII on my current rig in an on and off fashion to little avail. I didn't have any luck getting P:T up and running, either. The old Infinity Engine games (God bless Bioware for the little engine that could) seem to have difficulty running on newer computers (XP, I'm thinking). Do you guys have any tips for getting these to run smoothly? I'll be getting a new computer soon (X2 4800+, here I come!); I'm hoping that I might have better luck then.

If you find that you like the game - these 100+ hour games have a way of sinking their hooks into you - then you might also want to try the entirety of the Baldur's Gate series. For some shorter fare, take a look at the Icewind Dale series, Neverwinter Nights + Expansions (I've heard good things about Bioware's premium module downloads, too), KoTOR I & II, and Jade Empire. These all tend toward action more than the other Bioware/Black Isle games mentioned previously, and should weigh in at 20-80 hours (I think I listed them in order of descending length), depending on how many side quests you do. That's not to say, however, that their stories are lacking - they're just not as long.

Planescape: Torment is a brilliant game, but it has some flaws. The interface is clunky at times, and combat is lacking compared to other infinity engine games. It isn't that long and will probably only take 30 hours or so to complete.

Speaking of brilliant western RPGs, make sure to play Wasteland and Fallout sometime. Wasteland is easy to find online, and Fallout is bundled with its sequel for $10. I cannot recommend Fallout enough; it is my favorite game. If only it didn't crash so frequently on Windows XP :(

Don't cancel your purchase of Fallout. It deserves your love.

I don't know, has anyone here figured out how to play Fallout on windows xp without crashing? I've tried compatability mode, but that didn't do anything. Maybe using a DOS emulator such as DosBox is needed?

Wasteland is definately a classic, but like the old Ultima or SSI games, it's really hard to enjoy an old game if you hadn't played it around when it came out...

I really wish this game had somehow been made with D&D 3rd rules instead of the 2.5 or whatever they used in it.

I stil loved it, was absolutely glued to my PC during it (and I'm not even a big RPG fan), bt I bet I would have enjoyed it more with the #rd edtion rules, which I can actually make sense of.

I can only cast a spell a limited # of times before I have to rest? Well I guess a mage is just right out then.

I've played most of your PC RPGs. KOTOR is so highly regarded because it is somewhat like them, without being completely damned BORING, unlike say...Baldur's Gate. Stop being so pretentious.

Yeah, it's about 40 hours... I don't know, honestly, whether I'd proclaim Torment or Baldur's Gate II (or The Complete Ultima VII) as the "BEST WESTERN RPG EVER", but it's sure as hell up there.

Just be prepared to read a lot. Don't expect it to play like an average RPG. People have said the combat isn't up to par with other games, but that's because most of your XP will be gained from _actually playing your character's role_. It's an absolutely ingenious game, filled with great characters. You are in for a treat, man.

There is a patch!

For Windows XP? Do tell and possibly link!

Oh, and for an appreciation thread of Planescape: Torment with some spoilers AND a link (provided by JackFrost) to the game's great soundtrack online, check out this thread.

Yeah, that's like some Final Fantasy 1 shit right there. Fuck that.

Every AD&D game until something like 1999 had that limitation, dude... :lol

For the record, I was a fighter in Torment.

Hrm, I've been able to play both Fallouts on XP without crashing. Funny thing is I remember getting an error message during the install, but the games played just fine. I got the jewel case set which I think has latest available patch applied already, so maybe that's why. But ya, if you can bear the graphics, the game's a lot of fun. I need to get back to Fallout 2, I never did play through it the "right" way, and I think that's why I eventually lost interest.
I ran straight to the Brotherhood base far south of the map and got the uber power armor along with a bunch of advanced weaponry. Never did get to experience much of the story.

Yeah, I never played AD&D really except for the Baldur's Gate games and other D&D related computer software.

But resting really wasn't too much of a problem except for being attacked in the middle of the night.

Deus Ex is available on the PS2 and it's the better version imo.

Nothing beats playing BG2 online with a friend though. *Amazing*

Congratulations. :) Enjoy your play, and be sure to play the game with as little walkthrough help as possible.

As others have said, the story is outstanding. The ambiance and music will suck you into it's atmosphere.

Enjoy!

Heh, well 'best version' was maybe abit of but the PS2 version has changes and I picked it up two weeks ago. The new menu system, new level lay out's and small differences made the game really cool again. It felt fresh again and there just something wonderfull of hearing the theme through your home theater system.

For those who are interested, the website Gamer Girl has a two-part interview with Chris Avellone. It's an interesting read with some insight into the creative process behind Planescape: Torment.

Part 1

Part 2

Here's a great passage from the interview:

“Dogmeat” in Fallout probably represents an ideal archetype for making you feel emotionally invested in a CNPC – he’s valuable in combat and he’s fiercely loyal, and never causes you grief. The fact he’s a dog makes it even easier for players to empathize with him.

:)

Without a doubt, Planescape:Torment has the best story in a game I've ever played. It might not have flashy visuals and the interface is a bit clunky, but the music and atmosphere make up for it.

Just be prepared to read A LOT of text. Think of it has an interactive book, rather than the typical RPG game.
