Get yourself a 512mb or a 1gb SD card before you start loading up your 650 with stuff. Also keep in mind that you're going to likely have to pay for almost every program you get for your phone.
If you don't have an SD card reader for your PC/Mac, you might want to consider getting one, if not, make sure you get a program for your Treo called
FileZ, which lets you access the phone's memory without having to synch it and let's you delete stuff from the SD card via your phone. You can also get instant messaging programs like AIM and Verichat (supports several IM clients all in one) as well. IIRC if you search google for the UK/European version of AIM, you'll find a freeware version you can use; it works, but it is outdated.
Here's some extra entertainment-type crap that I use:
-pTunes- MP3 player for the Treo. Some other programs require that you have this to work. I use the regular version, but if you get the deluxe version, you can get streaming audio via shoutcast.
-MP3 Ringer- Uses pTunes to let you use sound files like .mp3, .wav, etc. for various functions such as alarms and to take the place of the crappy midi files the Treo uses for ring tones. There's another type of program that's similar to this one, but MP3 ringer is more stable from my experience.
-MM Player- A movie player for playing .avi files; works great and everything is very easy to see on the Treo 650's screen. You'll need to get a program that will convert other media types like .wmv and scale down the movie size to fit the Treo's memory and its screen. I usually use "
Pocket Divx Encoder," which is free. Also make SURE you get
Pocket DVD Studio for Palm OS; it's another free program that rips and converts DVDs to the correct size for your Treo; works great and a full DVD at decent quality will only take up around 100-200mb!
People's opinions on Media Players will differ; try the core media player first since it's free(?). Just avoid Kinoma Player; they use their own stupid file types and whenever they update the program, you have to buy it all over again. Rip-off.
Also for gaming, go to
www.kalemsoft.com. These guys have great emulators for the
NES, Master System/Game Gear, Gameboy/Gameboy Color, and Turbographx-16. You do have to purchase them all, but you can get a package deal for a decent price.
Handmark also has a great version of
Tetris that they sell for $14.99 IIRC; I like to play it with MP3s going in the background; it does slow the phone down a bit when you do this, but it doesn't affect Tetris in the slightest.
I leave for Japan on Tuesday. I'm going to miss this phone.
