Just Got Treo 650, what can it do?

Too dumb for the internet
I got it for some of its basic functions, and it has a really nice camera, but it seems like it can do a whole lot of other cool stuff. What applications are out there that are good? Is there a good site for info on it?

Also, they told me yes, no, yes, maybe, when I asked about being able to open word and excel documents. Then they said I would probably have to download something. Does anyone have experience with this? My provider is Verizon, if that matters at all.

Thanks! :)

welcome to the club dude. this by far is the best phone ever. pretty much any palm software can be ran on it. treocentral is the best for info. first thing to get is callfilter, then a good mp3 program like ptunes. also if you buy mmplayer you can watch dvd's on it

Cool, thanks guys. I know I can do a google search, but people here seem to be good for filtering out the bullshit. :)

I paid $399 for it. Kind of a lot I think, but I wanted to do it in-store, and like I said, it did everything I wanted it to do.

It can do just about everything, but much of the good stuff will require an expenditure of funds. Start with treocentral.com or mytreo.net

I would get one, but I dislike the current US market's obsession with slow internet access over CDMA (stuck with Sprint for the PCS-to-PCS minutes), and it costs way too much. Besides, work is letting me use a cellphone for free. :)

A free open-source media player for Palm/PPC: http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/about

Verizon's got some pretty damn fast service in most major cities, and even their regular access speeds seem to smoke what I've seen from T-Mobile. I am very impressed.

Get yourself a 512mb or a 1gb SD card before you start loading up your 650 with stuff. Also keep in mind that you're going to likely have to pay for almost every program you get for your phone.

If you don't have an SD card reader for your PC/Mac, you might want to consider getting one, if not, make sure you get a program for your Treo called FileZ, which lets you access the phone's memory without having to synch it and let's you delete stuff from the SD card via your phone. You can also get instant messaging programs like AIM and Verichat (supports several IM clients all in one) as well. IIRC if you search google for the UK/European version of AIM, you'll find a freeware version you can use; it works, but it is outdated.

Here's some extra entertainment-type crap that I use:

-pTunes- MP3 player for the Treo. Some other programs require that you have this to work. I use the regular version, but if you get the deluxe version, you can get streaming audio via shoutcast.

-MP3 Ringer- Uses pTunes to let you use sound files like .mp3, .wav, etc. for various functions such as alarms and to take the place of the crappy midi files the Treo uses for ring tones. There's another type of program that's similar to this one, but MP3 ringer is more stable from my experience.

-MM Player- A movie player for playing .avi files; works great and everything is very easy to see on the Treo 650's screen. You'll need to get a program that will convert other media types like .wmv and scale down the movie size to fit the Treo's memory and its screen. I usually use "Pocket Divx Encoder," which is free. Also make SURE you get Pocket DVD Studio for Palm OS; it's another free program that rips and converts DVDs to the correct size for your Treo; works great and a full DVD at decent quality will only take up around 100-200mb!

People's opinions on Media Players will differ; try the core media player first since it's free(?). Just avoid Kinoma Player; they use their own stupid file types and whenever they update the program, you have to buy it all over again. Rip-off.

Also for gaming, go to www.kalemsoft.com. These guys have great emulators for the NES, Master System/Game Gear, Gameboy/Gameboy Color, and Turbographx-16. You do have to purchase them all, but you can get a package deal for a decent price. Handmark also has a great version of Tetris that they sell for $14.99 IIRC; I like to play it with MP3s going in the background; it does slow the phone down a bit when you do this, but it doesn't affect Tetris in the slightest. :)

I leave for Japan on Tuesday. I'm going to miss this phone. :)

Wait a minute! LJP - free emu covering quite a few systems. Kalemsoft emus rock, but if I recall correctly, LJP can do more NES games than NesEm (Kalemsoft hasn't kept up with the various different NES mapper chips, so many games haven't been playable). Get it at http://yoyofr92.free.fr/ljp/ .

I don't think Little John P works on Treo 650. Never heard anyone discuss it, anyway. The thing about Kalemsoft's emulators is that they have versions optimized for the Treo 650, so it fits the screen perfectly.

Thanks a ton Lyte Edge. I can't believe how much money Handango wants for some of these apps. I'd throw down $5 for AOL IM, but $20? You have got to be kidding!

On top of that, I wouldn't go with the stock AIM client. Verichat is an exceptional client and with its bots (in Pro) you will have access to weather, directions, sports scores, yellow pages, etc. Verichat can be nutty expensive though.

It also supports Always-On connectivity to Yahoo!/MSN/AIM/ICQ.

Holy crap, I just spent an hour on the phone configuring email crap. Sending with the verizon account is easy, but I've got a personal and work account that I wanted to keep up with, and that took a while. Also, sending attachments other than pictures seems to be a bit of a pain. They said it's going to take 6 hours for the latest changes to go through so I have to wait until then to see if it worked.

Have you tried just using your personal and/or work accounts through the web? I don't even use the phone's e-mail features; I just go to my webmail account and check it from there.

Yeah, they work, but I thought it would be cool to have them all downloaded and stuff. I guess just for quicker access.

Does anyone have a case they recommend? I've got nothing right now, and I'd like to pick one up tomorrow. Neither Target nor Wal-Mart had anything, and even the Verizon store where I got it had nothing, so I am going to hit Best Buy and Circuit City I think.

I'm going to get one of these things, slap in a 1G card, download all of the content from Wikipedia via TomeRaider, and have my own little mf'in Hitchiker's Guide. :D

Curses, I'm far away from the Fry's in Dallas. There aren't any in VA where I live. If I can't find anything tomorrow, I can hit one of the ones around LA in a couple of weeks. Have any of you used and of the IM services? I read the article, and it's clear the expensive ones are pretty darn good, but it's hard to pay for something that is normally free.
