Just read an article on HL2: Aftermath over @ GS...

And I can't help but think....

After HL2 was finally released... it has actually kind of sucked. I mean. DoD hasn't been released.... no word on Counter-Strike 2, no real mods that shine like they did on HL1... and now the impending expansion due out by the end of this year.

Dunno the last time I even opened up to play Half-Life 2 on my computer. :|

The big HL mods didn't really show up until after Opposing Force, I thought.

well that's what I'm trying to figure out. If the learning curve on the new engine is so steep, that's why it's taking so long for them to come out.

I'm irritated that DoD:Source isn't out yet. I chose the silver package because DoD was free with it. I had no idea Valve was going to run off with my $10 and not release a god damn thing. Fuckers.

Every time I actually bother to launch HL2, Steam feels the need to download a bazillion megs of updates over my dial-up connection...despite the fact that I have automatic updates disabled. After about 15 minutes of watching a progress bar move, I get disinterested and proceed to turn on my Gamecube or XBox. PCGayming4Life, yo!

You turned auto-updates off and you're surprised when Steam complains that you're not current?

Sounds like user error.

I am a regular on the Dod Mod forums. We had a contest to guess when DoD would be released (this was back in February) The oldest guess was June 11th. Most of the regulars have a very realistic outlook on DOD and the capabilities of the Devs. So all of us are kind of in numb shock that it is July and no real concrete word on anything.

I really don't blame people for getting upset now. They should have just did the CS release (release the game, and a few maps ... add on later). Hopefully they have re-tooled DOD into something better.

The whole draw for DOD for me was solid teamwork, weapons that can kill, fast gameplay. Unfortunately BF2 has pretty much done all that and more. Then with COD2 on the horizon, I really can't see DOD attracting any new players. Hopefully they can keep the existing playerbase and maybe steal away some more CS:S players.

I really was sort of hoping that DOD would expand its playerbase .... but that window has closed.

In the end, Valve just moves really, really slow. They are also horrible at guessing when a project will be done. They are forgiven because they release such good products, but it still makes it frustrating to defend them.

He's not complaining about not being current, but about being forced to get update's he does not want

In its current shape i rather not have DoD source at all. It fucking looks like dod 1 with 10 extra polygons. Looking at a screen is disturbing for hardcore DoD fans. :(

I play CS: Source on the computer, but I'm sick on playing it on PC. I prefer console shooters to PC shooters simply because I'm generally better at the console ones. But I do play, and love PC shooters as well, CS: Source included.

I bought hl2 from a store because i wanted an actual hardcopy. If I'd of known that they'd only include the fucking dvd I would have bought the silver package. So to this day I still don't know where I stand entire. I can't get HL:Source and I don't know if I'll have to buy dod seperately or not. It's fucking stupid that I can't change to silver (I guess the boxed version is the same as bronze) Maybe something will happen when Valve and vivendi split in august

Why not get both HL2 and BF2?

HL2 is such a great game, loading points aside. Can't wait to play Aftermath expansion!

I was pretty underwhelmed with the Source engine actually. The only reason to develop for it is because so many people own it (as compared to Far Cry, which I consider a better engine).

CS: Source was actually a more fun game in the initial beta stages. Then they down played the physics a bit, which made it a little less crazy, and a little less fun.

Counter-Strike 2 is CS SOURCE, afaik
It's not.

CS beta 1 came out in may or june 99 if I remember right. About 6 months after release. We are 8 months after release of HL2. But CS didn't really get too popular until beta 5 or so, which was like a year after release.

I am kind of disappointed no HL2 mods have came out big, but higher quality graphics and more complex engines means more time goes into it. I'd expect some big releases from modmakers before winter.

Of course that's not including Garry's Mod, which is probably the best mod of HL1+HL2, excluding CS. And it came out less than a month after HL2 came out....

I WANT TEAM FORTRESS2 FOR FUCK SAKES. I HATE YOU VALVE.

In protest I haven't played HL2 to this day, and I'll never give Valve another dime again.
