I recall the animators not actually using most of his mocap outside of his facial expressions to match up to his lines, so it really was a waste. I wouldn't be surprised if Cumberbatch insisted on the mocap given he recorded his lines in the exact same position as that gif.

Not nessecarily. I mean, Steppenwolf could be a well written (maybe with no important depth, but some really good lines and moments) character. I don't think the fact that the actor didn't act with the other actors is something we should be worry about.

Steppenwolf obeys Darkseid, doesn't he? So, I expect a post-credits scenes which reveals Darkseid as the villain of JL2 or Steppenwolf saying something about Darkseid in the end of the movie.
