Justified - Season 6 - The Final Showdown - Olyphant & Goggins - Tuesdays on FX

Damn, its not often I watch a show from start to finish and still love it without hating parts of it, but Justified is on that list. I'm really going to miss it, the ride was awesome and the feel of being part of a secret club here that appreciated and helped fill in the blanks of the show.

But what about Bob???????

Loved it. Had been saving 11 & 12 so I watched all three in a row. So good.

So Boyd knew that Ava was pregnant?
No, that's why Ava was so adamant that Raylan tell no one about her child, because she absolutely didn't want Boyd to know about it, and so that's why Raylan had those fake documents made up saying Ava was dead. So he wouldn't want to break out and find Ava (and their child) anymore.

Just finished watching the finale. Loved it. Justified is my all-time favorite TV shows and one of the only ones I actually watched from the day it started instead of catching up on Netflix/Amazon.

The whole episode was intense, from Avery-Ava, Boyd-Avery, Boyd-Ava, Raylan-Boyd, and Raylan-Boon. Its nice to see that all major characters had some form of closure, and I loved seeing Preacher Boyd make another appearance. That final scene with Raylan and Boyd was perfectly done, as was most of the series. Excellent series and I already miss it.

Oh, and of course it's Wynn that walks away with all the money.

Ava won, Boyd lost, and he gets to live wirhout knowing something quite important. That's very devilish, truth being told. And he doesn't deserve that knowledge at all. Let him carry on with his delusions and no longer torment her or his offspring.

Anyone else a little disappointed Winona and Raylan didn't make it as a couple? I'm a sucker for romantic endings.

The point that has been made over and over during the series and the reason this finale (and last line) works, is because Raylan and Boyd are inherently similar. They're both outlaws, don't play nice with others, and have something of a mean streak ("beats angry." )

If Raylan and Winona had suddenly worked as a regular couple, that would have been a fundamental breach in his core characterization. The same way, Raylan knows why Ava doesn't want Boyd to know: because he, much like Raylan, would move the world to try, try, try, and fail, because they're from the same mold, just at different sides of the line.

That interview that linked a good few pages ago sheds some light on this. Both actors are kind of frustrated with movies having no story. Events occur, but there's nothing underneath. So this show ending with a story that actually amounts to something is a big deal for both of them, but Olyphant as producer in particular.

moving on:

aside from not noticing the hat (thanks Bobby), I also missed that Boone specifically went for a head-shot. Speaking of characterization: this is what you want. A guy who knows damn well he shouldn't, but can't help himself to do it anyway (and would have succeeded, if not for the risk).

That pathetic bandage right after made me laugh though. Not even a goddamn scratch.

Oh damn, I didn't even think about that in terms of their characterizations, but it makes perfect sense that Boone goes for the headshot out of arrogance.

Boon mentioned to Loretta in an earlier episode that he always goes for the headshot. He said something along the lines of "You never know when some pussy will be wearing a bulletproof vest."

I may be reading too much into things, but I rewatched the pilot yesterday and Boyd has a line something like "see, now that's how you wear a hat, all casual, not down on your ears", referring to how Raylan wears his hat high on his head. That made me think maybe Boon aimed too high.

Makes sense. The finale had several callbacks to earlier episodes, especially the pilot.

I liked how when Raylan was wearing Boon's ugly hat he said to Rachel "I tried it on and it fit", which is what he told her in season one when she asked about his original hat. That makes me wonder if Raylan took his previous hat off someone he killed and/or someone that managed to land a shot on him.

Hah, that's great.

I watched the pilot and didn't note that at all, but did read that in Sepinwall's review, so you're definitely not alone. It's a really good observation.

Another (maybe) callback I haven't seen mentioned yet is the bloodstain on Boyd's shirt in the barn from the cop getting shot was in the same spot Raylan shot him in the pilot.

I'd really love a short akin to those of The Wire of young Raylan and Boyd digging coal together, bantering away as they do so, hinting at how different yet connected they are. It's not necessary, but I'd like to see how they bonded working together.

I would totally watch "CW Justified."

Is it a stretch to say that Justified had one of the best, if not the best, rogue's gallery of any modern TV drama?

Easily. They did an incredible job of building engaging characters extremely quickly. The fact that I feel like we had 2+ seasons of Markham, Boon, Ty Walker, Choo Choo, Seabass, etc. is evidence of that.

Doesn't have the second one, but:

justified-lorretta.gif

Nah, that is the second one. Warming Glow musta cut the first one out to make the gif smaller

He thinks he's got those two completely fucked over the second he rolls in there... and he almost does. And he is LOVING it. Everything they try, he's got an answer for it. And then THAT happens.

Too good.

Ah gotcha. Well, one at any rate :)

It really was a great scene. I'm really glad that we got to see him one last time. You can tell that dude just loved being that character:

I really liked the finale, those last lines were amazing. The Boon Raylan standoff was great too, I like how in a previous episode Boon said something along the lines of: 'It's risky to go for the headshot' (when he shot Loretta's boyfriend) or something. Now he tries it and Raylan goes for the body shot. Raylan lives, Boon dies.

I think the funny/sad part is that as he dies, he sees the giant hole in Raylan's hat, so he knows he missed.

Another nice touch was Ava leaving only after Raylan got up. So you could invent some fanfiction reason like she was waiting to see if he was okay before making a run for it.

One thing I can't get over is the fact that Boyd would want to check out Raylan's story regarding the fate of Ava. The confirmed death of an escaped fugitive would make the news, or at least the information would leak to Boyd's connections. Once he discovers there's still an active manhunt for her, what's to stop him from putting 2 and 2 together?

I think that's part of the reason why Raylan indulged him. The "that's right" was partly sentimental, partly working an angle.

Great show. Went out with style and quiet flair, as opposed to multiple shock and awe moments. I love how it ended with two of the central characters just sharing a somber moment.

I wonder if Boone knew he fired poorly in the end there; he seemed hell-bent on finishing Raylan off before Lorena stopped him.

Best ending in a series I can remember. Breaking Bad was more powerful, but it felt like a logic conclusion, a breathtaking at that, but somewhat expected. Justified went for the Wire route of offering a quiet reflexion on its themes but it fucking nailed it even more so.

It's still too strong in my mind to offer any rational thought about it other than that. I'll say just two more things: 1- I'll miss Tim; 2- Still waiting on that Better Call Duffy spinoff.

COME BACK SOON OLYPHANT AND GOGGINS.

What a great series finale guys. Sad it's over, but it was a great ride. I know I will rewatch this show multiple times in the years to come. So good.

Sad thing about all this, if Justified had originally been streaming on Netflix instead of exclusively on Amazon, it would have picked up a nice following for it's last run. Netflix did wonders for Breaking Bad and I am sure it would have helped out Justified the same. Another great show stuck in Amazon exclusivity is The Americans. FX made a huge error on their part. Amazon Instant Watch is hidden behind it's Prime membership. Hopefully now that the series is over, Justified can show up on Netflix. Would love to hear about Bill Simmons finally binge watching this show and loving every minute of it.

Pitch perfect ending.

Really happy this last season was a return to form - I don't think season 5 was as terrible as some but it was easily the most uneven Justified season.

Can't believe it's over, and that it's been more than 5 years since I saw some promo shots and said "well, I don't know anything about this but Olyphant in a cowboy hat means I have to at least give it a shot."

What a great fucking ride it's been.

That's pretty much all I knew about it before diving into it as well. It was just after season two had ended, and I just came off of finishing Deadwood for the first time.

I'm going to miss these characters so much, and that dialogue, damn. Perfect Series finale, I wish they cut to the wide shot during the standoff sooner though, but I understand they probably wanted to focus on Boon pulling first.

I thought the second half of the finale was good, and the last scene was perfect and incredible (those lines were obviously in the writer's head since the first season).

the first half though seemed incredibly rushed, markhams last encounter was badly done imo. to shoot the hostage boyd had and then leave himself wide open was just poor writing considering what a manipulative cunning tyrant he had been built up to be. very dumb from markham. the shootout with boon was good but a bit contrived, i mean he came out of nowhere! he said he'd been to that barn and followed him, but to me it just seemed like they were ticking boxes with that shootout.

last week's episode was far better and had some fantastic moments in. i am happy with the conclusion though.

It was specifically timed as they were driving out of Harlan, with the usual season closing song reiterating the idea that "you will never leave Harlan alive." Which added a very heightened tension to the scene knowing it was the season finale. I mean, yeah, the character's entire purpose was essentially to give Raylan a proper western showdown in the series finale, but he also served several more purposes from thematic (past vs. future), facilitating Ava to be able to escape, and paying homage to Elmore Leonard via the hat Raylan ends up with.

Still can't believe this show is over and I'm still thinking about the finale. I loved the ending for a lot of reasons, especially the last conversation, but really it's how they went against the cliches and almost lead people to believe at least one of the main characters was going to die. I thought for sure Raylan was dead because they had him reconcile with his family earlier in the season and show a lot of interest in his girl so he'd die like characters do in a lot of stories where they can see a happy ending earlier in the story just to get robbed of it because of their mistakes at the end.

Instead, he avoids that but doesn't get back together with his wife but still gets to be a father figure for his daughter. It was a perfect conclusion that felt happy, but not too happy for the story I guess.

And he beheaded the snake. The character is great and we only knew him for 5 or 6 episodes.

Good points about the story and characters too. I'll add that interview to my list of Justified reading materials.

Having seen the finale a few times, there are just several small moments that pay off. I'll agree with Feinberg's criticism about the show - primarily that they failed Tim and Rachel - but that's because everyone else was written so well.

Not knowing anything about Elmore Leonard's stories, I just expected someone to die based on the fact that they keep using the song. But I'm happy with how it all worked out of course.
