i think its funny that out of all kpop stars the chubby one made it. not 2NE1, not SNSD, it was psy. i love that. maybe the chubby one from super junior is thinking about a solo career now? lol

i love me some k-pop but i doubt that other songs are going to succeed in the us. i hope psy enjoys his time right now. and looking at his recent live performances (in and outside of korea) it seems like he does. very humble guy.

It probably has a lot to do with the fact that Psy didn't come out of the "machine" that the article mentions. He's actually a real person with creativity.

Love me some Brown Eyed Girls, gonna listen to them right now!

Easily my favorite group.

Anyway, I gotta disagree with the thread topic. Gangnam Style is a phenomenon and an exception. Generally speaking, most people in the States are over the boy/girl band thing (One Direction being the glaring exception atm), which is the bread and butter of the k-pop scene. That, along with the lack of idol status in the States, I think will prevent k-pop from ever becoming more than the occasional cool song/video on Youtube.

When Gangnam Style invades US sports events and starts getting radio airplay, you know something's up.

bro, you should post in our thread more often

I would like too but man, it is intimidating. There is so much going on and your guys' knowledge of what is on another level. I'm always behind the curve as well so that thread is nice to catch up on things. I do enjoy lurking there though and learning what I can.

I need Rainbow to not be a flop group....;____;

;_;

Sign is one of my favs.

Mine too!

Mine too!

Dont worry man. Im listening to a shitton of kpop every day but im too lazy to learn every fucking name of each singer :D but i have my favourites though. Hyuna and nana. I enjoy the pics and gifs then.

as a half Korean who just recently came back to the states, it's still weird to hear Gangnam Style on the radio. also they always mispronounce 'gangnam' lawl.

I wouldn't be too intimated by kpop-gaf. Pretty easy going group for the most part.

And we were all novices at some stage.

I mean, Alt has been posting there for years and he still doesn't know anyone's name beside yoona.

No one I know listens to K-Pop. They're aware of Gangnam Style because it's played on the radio and they think it's funny but I doubt they'd actively go out and listen to K-Pop.

Stuff like this sounds good even if you don't understand Korean IMO

If these guys could put out English albums that don't sound awkward, they could sell here. I guess what I'm saying is that a K-pop star who has the "swag" and talent of groups like 2NE1 and BB PLUS fluent English (not just singing but relating with fans) would do well overseas.

CL's English is pretty good but the others are clearly not comfortable lol

I've just found out about k-pop in the last 10 mins. I've heard the psy track before, and I heard of j-pop before. Didn't know there was a genre called k-pop though. Is there a *-pop for other countries? Or just korea and japan

I don't see this happening either. Sure "Gangnam Style" is like really big right now, but I don't think that K-pop factors much in all of this. It's comparable to that Numa Numa song from a few years back. That song blew up also pretty big worldwide, but in the end did fuck all for the Romanian pop scene.

For the love of all that is holy, more sexy gifs!

Just come to our thread in the community section haha

I don't think its comparable at all. Kpop already has a decent following in the US. Unless I am mistaken and Romanian pop scene has a lot of fans already? .....

Just like Latin music was supposed to conquer America?

Even less so. People try to hype certain things such as the push in Korea to bring the music here but the fact is that all of the actual attempts to introduce K-Pop here were miserable failures for everyone involved despite aggressive marketing. Psy's popularity will never translate to people moving on to groups like Girl's Generation or Beast as their appeal is completely different from his.
