Would it be incorrect to call things like this "a joke" - as we did call things like this, that made us laugh, before the word 'meme' was invented? What's the defining difference?

A meme can be joke, but it can be a ton of other things and the word was created in 1976

According to wikipedia:
A meme is a postulated unit or element of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, and is transmitted from one mind to another through speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena

You guys have been laughing at this all morning. It hasn't even been 24 hours and now it's old because other people outside of Gaf and 4chan are having fun with it too?

People always want to be the first to call a meme old. That way they are cooler then all the people still using it.

But fuck the haters cause O'rly owl still cracks me up. I know, that makes them cooler then me right.

How do you pronounce "meme"?
This might help to understand/remember the pronounciation.

Wikipedia said:
The word meme originated with Dawkins' 1976 book The Selfish Gene. To emphasize commonality with genes, Dawkins coined the term "meme" by shortening "mimeme", which derives from the Greek word mimema ("something imitated").[8]

i.e., rhymes with `gene'.

Seriously, enough with these threads. The meme's not even good.

I completely missed this meme on gaf. I was writing a 1000 word essay.

I just found out about it today due to it catching like wild. fucking. fire. with all the pop blogs. It was even on kotaku man. KOTAKUUUUUUU
