New Kanye West Album
posted 2005-06-28

"This is killing everything out there!" Kanye West exclaimed while listening to his own album, Late Registration. "Who can't hear that?"

And at a listening session for the album in New York on Wednesday, the answer was: No one. Even though the album isn't finished yet, even though not all of the completed songs were played and some songs weren't played all the way through, and even though the video for "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" that he was unveiling actually premiered on television during the event, a large crowd including Common and a tardy Lil' Kim packed into a tiny room at Sony Studios to hear and see what Kanye's been cooking up.

"I wanted to take this opportunity to play [the album] and show off," Kanye said unabashedly.

First he played the video, directed by Hype Williams, which opens with a shot of a diamond mine and a subtitled introduction that reads, "When I was a boy, I worked in the diamond mines deep in the dark mountains of Sierra Leone. Children worked there day and night under the watchful eyes of soldiers. Every day we feared for our lives. Our only hope came from when we would sing" then the sample from Shirley Bassey's "Diamonds Are Forever" kicks in (see " 'Diamonds' Remix: Kanye Raps About Rocks, Jay Raps About Roc").

Throughout the black-and-white clip, there are shots of Kanye walking through Prague in a wool coat, children working in the diamond mines, and skewed versions of the De Beers diamonds commercials where, after the wholesome couple agrees to get married, blood flows from the woman's ring finger (see "Kanye West Shooting 'Diamonds' Video In 'Pray-Goo' ").

Later in the video, the kids are featured underneath the display case in a jewelry shop, then a car drives into it, knocking West down outside of the store. The kids come to his rescue, and they all run into a cathedral together, where Kanye double-fists pianos for the song's finale.

At the listening session, a minimally blinged-out West said he expects to catch a lot of flack from people for having Williams behind the lens because of his flashy, all-style-no-substance videos but Kanye defended Hype by saying that it was the other people who copied his style who made it into a full-fledged trend.

After the video, West played tracks from Late Registration, including the "Diamonds" remix with Jay-Z, the second single, "Gold Digger" (which features Jamie Foxx) and "Drive Slow," featuring Paul Wall and GLC (see "Kanye, Jay-Z Give An Early Peek At West's Late Registration").

When "Crack Music" (featuring Game) started playing and Kanye thought the crowd wasn't paying close enough attention, he stopped the song and asked the listeners for their concentration. "The lyrics are very good, trust me," he said. On the track, Kanye says the government intentionally spreads AIDS and implicates Ronald Reagan in bringing down the Black Panthers.

"You can say, 'I'ma kill you n---a, I'ma kill you n---a, I'ma kill you n---a' but saying 'I'm going to dinner with a white woman' or 'Diamonds come from Sierra Leone' is way more disruptive," Kanye explained. "But I had to get it off my chest."

Then he played "Bring Me Down," which was arranged by the album's co-executive producer Jon Brion (Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple) and has a chorus sung by Brandy. West said he thought it would be interesting to have the former sweetheart say, "I always knew that one day they'd try to bring me down" (perhaps referencing Brandy's 1994 hit "I Wanna Be Down"). Brion's other string arrangement on the album is "Celebration," a straight-up party song that Kanye said he particularly enjoyed using a 20-piece orchestra for, because the hook goes, "You know what this is?/ It's a celebration, bitches."

West said he appreciated the broader palette that Brion brought to his music. "[Rap music] is so formulaic: 16 bars, chorus, 16 bars, chorus," he said. "I had just one verse. It was a mad long verse, but that's all I had to say."

After that, it was game time. The first game was peek-a-boo, where Kanye would only play a snippet of a new song because there is a guest on the track that he's not ready to reveal yet. And the second was a guessing game: West played "Heard 'Em Say" and asked everyone to guess who was on the hook.

Someone shouted out Smokey Robinson, but it actually turned out to be Adam Levine from Maroon 5. "They were so big that I thought they'd be less ill, but I heard them rehearsing backstage at the Grammys and he was hitting all them mockingbird notes and I said, I have to get him in the studio."

Kanye revealed that his third album will break him out of his underdog-themed titles and be called Graduation, then indulged in some more self-promotion. He dismissed the concept of time constraints when putting a record out: "I won't put music out unless I cold talk my sh--," he said. "I'm the [Muhammed] Ali of this sh--." Then he addressed the press directly, urging them not to be afraid to write as many nice things as they want to about him. "When you had dreams of being writers and writing about the Rolling Stones or Prince ... yes, only Kanye would put his name in that group," he laughed.

"Seriously, how many perfect albums is that under my belt? I'm sorry," he said, before adding, "Actually, no, I don't apologize."

Just picked up the remastered edition of College Dropout. The album's great start to finish. The only song I don't really dig is "Get Em' High."

Some good side Kanye tracks:

Selfish w/Slum Village & John Legend
Down and Out w/Cam'ron
The Food (Live) w/Common

Pretty sure its the same version

also be sure to check out

Kanye West ft Jay-Z - Diamonds Remix

amazing song

No, the one I heard on the radio had a much less interesting beat and didn't have Shirley Bassey in the background

o, never heard that version, but on another Diamonds remix with Mos Def, Kanye raps like there was no beat, he just does it extremely fast with no stopping, its a good remix though

Kanye is probably one of the only guys out there who talk shit constantly and yet always seems to come back with some crazy shit. Gold Diggers with Jamie Foxx is such a sick song. Diamonds are Forever (plus the Remix) are so good, you can bump that shit like some Crunk music crap. :lol

I'll find gold digger for you guys, and upload that shit. it's worth it.

I hate most rap.

With a passion.

Most mainstream rap these days is just about partying, bitches, hos, whatever.

On that note, Kanye West is fucking amazing and I'm trying to get all my rock friends into him. I can't fucking wait for this.

Most mainstream music these days sucks and is just about whatever.

Zeo you mis-spoke. I fixed it for you.

In fact I'd almost say current mainstream rock is the worst offender for being about nothing, watered down, cookie-cutter and lame.

Good Beats (not outstanding IMO).
Average Lyricist.
Awful Hook Maker.

Forever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever. Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.Ever.

Uh, nope. I don't think mainstream rock is nearly as bad as rap. Not even close. I'm pretty happy with the popular rock stuff lately. Not that it's amazing, but not shit.

And I think you're bitching a bit much. Only reason I hate mainstream rap is because of what it stands for: shit.

Damn, this album is going to be hot. No one can deny that College Dropout is a classic...i'm sorry, but in 10 years, we're not gonna be talking about The New Danger, or Beautiful Struggle, or even Com's Be.

That album didn't have a single weak track.

some more stuff from mtv

With Late Registration, Dr. West has indeed delivered the medicine. And once again, he did the only way he can: with honesty, humor and his conviction in continuing to prove himself by making great music. Enlisting composer/producer Jon Brion (Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann) to lend his skills to the album’s production, West’s newest offering is a big album in every sense of the word. His trademark sample-based arrangements have expanded to include live instrumentation. West has always been an artist who challenges not only himself, but his audience and his fellow musicians with new ideas and new ways of expressing the joys and sorrows of life through music. Late Registration does just that as it takes down avenues and alleyways filled with sound and vision.

With a line up of guests that includes Jay-Z, Jamie Foxx, Brandy, Paul Wall, Cam’ron, Adam Levine of Maroon Five and his longtime friend and collaborator John Legend - West has widened his scope since The College Dropout. There are new flavors and voices in the mix, but it’s still 100% Kanye, still the voice of the underdog tackling the highs and lows of everyday life through pointed lyrics and emotionally charged music.

Eschewing cliché for reality, Late Registration addresses a litany of topics that range from the personal to the political and all that falls in between. The fist pumping "Crack Music", which features a one-line hook from superstar MC the Game, looks at the effects of drugs on the black community and offers that at the end, "the music is medicine." A similar thread runs though "Addiction", a song that has West asking why it is that "everything that’s supposed to be bad makes me feel so good?" On "Bring Me Down," Brandy gives a mournful voice to Kanye’s barbed cynicisms as he raps "If you ever wanted to ever be anything, there’ll always be somebody that’ll shoot down any dream."

While tracks such as these show West’s rage, he’s not one to dwell on the negative. He’d rather examine it and turn it into something positive. This introspection finds its way onto tracks like his breezy and harmonious collaboration with Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine, "Heard ‘Em Say", where the two stress the importance of being honest with yourself in a world that’s anything but.

Kanye’s not one to limit himself, and lets his humor shine through on tracks like "Drive Slow" featuring Paul Wall and the return of GLC, and "Gold Digger," his reunion with Jamie Foxx, a cautionary tale for those who confuse love with the love of somebody’s wallet.

Throughout, Late Registration’s sheer depth of musicality is what’s most impressive. Dark and eerie at times, uplifting in others - tracks like "Touch The Sky" and "Celebration" come to mind – the album finds Kanye at once madly in love with hip-hop music, and fighting with it like a lover scorned - trying to push it’s boundaries, to see how far it will go. A daunting task, indeed. But it seems as though West – as stressed as he is – is more than up to the task.

I think mainstream rock is crap... it is about partying, losing you GF, and complete remakes of other more talented artist...

Haha, what a cocky motherfucker. He can write some decent lines, but he really isn't that great a lyricist. Not yet, anyway. Maybe Late Registration will blow me away, but personally I think Diamonds is a garbage track, mainly because of that stupid "Forever-ever, ever-ever..." stuff. If he needs someone to write that shit for him, that's weak.

Ya, I agree with Be, also my friend said Webbie is one of the best rappers, hahaha, Ive actually never listened to him, his album came out today, He says Webbie will take over rap :lol :lol :lol :lol

o he sings that?

what a shitty song

anyways what is everyones top Kanye Songs?

mine would have to be

Is this the same as Freshman Adjustment? My favorite tracks off that are:

Hey Mama

Self Conscious (aka Yeah)
Livin' In A Movie
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
03 Electric Relaxation

Hmmm, I guess that last track suggests this was a 2003 album, but I only found it recently. I'm all over this new album when it drops though. PEACE.

Through The Wire - itunes says I've listened to this over 110 times :lol
Family Business - great funny heartfelt lyrics
Last Call - love the spoken word style
Jesus Walks - "Yall eat pieces of shit?"
School Spirit - "I got a Jones like Norah" :lol

I thought it was a direct nod to Outkast (sounds almost exactly like a part of Andre's verse in Ms Jackson)

Deltron should sue for identity theft. He's a poor man's Del, guys.

Not to say that he's awful, he's still better than the rest of the mainstreamers. :)

Kanye's one of the few mainstream producers who makes musical hip-hop anymore. His lyrics aren't great, but I gave up pop lyrics a long time ago, anyway.

K-OS (Canadian rapper) makes some fine musical hip-hop as well. Love his two albums, especially last year's Joyful Rebellion ("Crackbukkit" is one of most catchy tunes I've heard in years). Saw him in concert last Friday night, and he and the band were outstanding.

^^^I'm confused, I don't understand this comparison at all.

John Legend's cd was pretty good, at least he brought something new/different to the table, at least compared to usual r&b drivel.

ha i was just going to bump this

Here are two news Items

Rap star KANYE WEST urges rock fans to buy his records because they are just as alternative as edgy guitar tracks.

The THROUGH THE WIRE rapper sees strong similarities between his sound and bands like THE WHITE STRIPES and FRANZ FERDINAND, so he can't understand why rock crowds steer clear of his hitmaking hip-hop.

He says, "What I struggle with is that I think my music is rap, but I also think it's alternative. If you have a White Stripes album or a Franz Ferdinand album, you should also have a Kanye West album.

"If you can appreciate that style of music, you should be able to appreciate mine, too. It's darker, sexier, it's low; it has a lot in common with rock production and instrumentation."
