I watched the whole series long ago and I had just started listening to the ost in all it's entirety just recently.

I was wonering if anyone here has any cool (historical) info regarding the series.

I already know of kenshin but I want to know more of shishio and Saitou Hajime.

I watched the OVA "Reflection" a couple of days ago... Man, that ending was damn sad. :(

The manga of Rurouni Kenshin is far better than the anime, IMO. I read through the entire manga a good month ago, and was surprised with the amount of changes that were made.

And then... There is no excuse for them axing the Enishi arch out of the anime and replacing it with that Christian Hiten Mitsurigi Ryuu guy. :(

[EDIT] - Oh, and...

Yeah I nearly (well kinda) cried while watching the last OVA. It was probably because I became so attached to the characters after watching the whole series. :(

I believe the reason the Enishi arch wasn't in the anime was because it wasn't written yet. That's why you saw the horrible amounts of filler. A thing that naruto has under control.

EDIT:
I also like that lightning fast swordsman, I found it weir that he was always smiling.

Okubo Toshimichi, the one who asked Kenshin to kill Shishio at the beginning of the Kyoto Arc existed, and he was assassinated on May 14th, as shown in the anime. Of course in real life it wasn't by Soujirou, but by the people who stopped the carriage(as seen in the anime). This was how they were able to work this piece of fiction with history.

http://sakabatouzanbatou.com/HistoricPers/okubo.html

Yamagata, the man who came for Kenshin earlier in the series also existed. You can read some info here:

This site has a lot more info, under historical:

So, uhm, what is the right order for watching Kenshin?

I have the first season boxset, the movie (Samurai X motion picture), and the OVA collection which is a boxset that has (all?) 3 OVAs in it.

Oh and how much does Kenshin get involved with the "miburo wolves," or the Shinsengumi? I saw Peace Maker Kurogane and while the anime was "meh" I thought it was very interesting most of the characters (and the entire shinsengumi organizations and the anime climax) were all real. Even more sad when reading on the fate of the members later in their lives. :(

I've read some where Kenshin actually goes against them in the kyoto arc.

Watch the tv series first. The movie seems to take place(or at least my guess) after Kyoto(though the very beginning of the movie could be during the episodes before Kyoto, as the train ride could fit in the timeframe of that episode where the train that Kenshin and the rest were on got hijacked). The OAVs should be seen after the Kyoto Arc.

There are scenes with flashbacks during the Kyoto Arc(though not really a lot, mind you), where Kenshin faces off with Okita Soushi before facing off with Saitou. Most of the stuff with the Shinsengumi take place in the OAVs though.

Cool. I'll see if I like the series enough to pick up the second box set. Right Stuff has it for 85 dollars which is tempting. What worries me is the 3rd season. Everybody says it sucks but I know if I go that far in Kenshin I want to complete everything so that's another 85 dollars... >__<

It would be good for my Anime collection though. :)

Well, if you want my opinion, the first arc, or season(known as "Wandering Samurai" on the dvds) is ok(but filled with filler, though not all of it bad), it is the second arc(Kyoto), where the real 'meat' of this series is.

As for the 3rd arc, while I don't think all of it is bad(as two of my favorite episodes appear here), it is a bit of a let down considering how good the Kyoto arc was.

Enishi deserves some love too:

The fights during this arch would've translated so well to the anime. :(

(the fight with Enishi in the OVA was kinda... Meh...)

but how did he learn kenshin's techique in such a short while?
It seems as though he was spying on Kenshin for years. Not just during that arch. I think by the time they actually had to fight(for the first time), the only technique he had not seen was Kenshin's Ougi(sp?): Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki.

... And I'm very surprised I remembered the full name of that technique. o_o

Forgive me for being clueless, but who is Enishi? The picture looks like someone I saw in a commercial, but I doubt it, as from what everyone is saying, it sounds like he wasn't in the show. And this arc that was in the manga that wasn't animated, what was it about? Lack of time (which will finally be dealt with on saturday) and money has kept me from buying alot of Kenshin stuff.

If you're watching the series you might wanna watch the reflections OVA when you're finish.

it wraps everything up including enishi and who he is.

I've only watched the Kyoto arc and the first two OVA's.

Does "Reflection" at all touch upon the Enishi/jinchuu arc, at the very least, in passing? If so, I may watch it out of curiosity.

Didn't want to start a new topic, so I thought I'd bump this since it’s “everything” about kenshin. :p

I just finished the Kyoto arc and boy did it ROCK. The first season, wandering samurai, really left me confused thinking "is this it? What is all this kenshin fuss about?" and then I watched Kyoto... Awesome, freaking awesome. :D And Shishio rocks too. :D

Ahem. So I have a few questions. :p I know Wheeljack359 answered some but what I would like to know is:

1) Is it better to watch the OVAs/movie after Kyoto or the whole series? If the 3rd season really is that bad I’ll watch the OVAs/movie before it then..

2) Movie before OVAs or the opposite?

3) In what order should I watch the OVAs? I have the box set.

4) When will the manga finally be over in the U.S.? I'm definitely going to watch season 3 no matter how bad it is since I already bought it but if the manga is so much better (and different.. I hate it when plot/major events are different in manga/anime) then I got to read it too. Kenshing just rocks so much.

Oh and does
Saito ever return? I know he's alive but does Kenshin ever finds out?

It's ok to watch after Kyoto, as really nothing from the 3rd arc of the tv series takes anything from the manga.

2) Movie before OVAs or the opposite?

Hmm, I'd say movie before OVA. There's a Bakumatsu flashback in the beginning of the movie, which, unfortunately gets a bit overplayed during the course of the movie.

3) In what order should I watch the OVAs? I have the box set.

If I remember the names that ADV gave them, Trust and Betrayal, then Reflections.

4) When will the manga finally be over in the U.S.? I'm definitely going to watch season 3 no matter how bad it is since I already bought it but if the manga is so much better (and different.. To be honest, I dunno. Vol 6 should be out, or will be out. Saito doesn't appear 'til no. 7. Considering there are 28 volumes, it should be a few years.

Oh and does
Saito ever return? I know he's alive but does Kenshin ever finds out?

In the manga, yes, as he does have another role to play in the Jinchuu Arc, and has I think a quick cameo in Tales of the Meiji.

The Kenshin manga has been put on the 'hurry up offense' by Viz in that volumes are being released monthly. Considering V9 is out in November, V28 should be out June 2006.

As for the anime, the actual timeline is:

OVA (Trust & Betrayal) - Series - OVA (Reflections)

The movie is all filler so as far as I'm concerned you'd really have to be a hardcore kenshin fan to think it's worth the money.

The first OVA (Trust & Betrayal) can actually be watched whenever; it completely spoils Kenshin's past but it's basically the best story in the series, so if for some reason you weren't so hot on the series itself, the OVA would definitely amp you up. (I saw it before the series). The manga-ka has even admitted he liked the first OVA better than what he put down on paper in the Kenshin manga.

The series...well, watch Kyoto and then jump ship. The filler is overwhelming and the show ends on a really broken note. As a series, Kenshin is basically just great animated drama to help clarify parts of the manga, but doesn't stand alone so well.

The final OVA is super-compressed Jinchuu Arc + New Ending. You get some short recaps (Kyoto arc fight scenes in OVA animation quality) too. To be honest, I like this ending, it's super depressing but fits in well with the first OVA. People who were weaned on the series (or manga) instead tend to hate it since it's a completely different ending compared to the manga (and general resentment over not animating Jinchuu despite the actual costs and profit margin involved).

Having seen basically all of the animated Kenshin bits, I'm keeping the first OVA set and am pondering picking up the manga. The rest of the show, while it had its high points, is really too problematic compared to the great anime series of today.

One last question ^__^;

I know I should watch Trust and Betrayal before Reflections, but I don't have the director's cut and I have one DVD for Trust and one for Betrayal... is it Trust and then Betrayal? I’m guessing it is since everybody says Trust and Betrayal but I just want to make sure.

I think I'll be able to get the manga through irc though. Kyoto arc ends in volume 16/17 so that's about 12 volumes to get. If I do acquire them in about a week I'll just read it and then watch the last season. This way I'll have an idea of how far it is from the manga.

Also, assuming seasons 1 and 2 followed the manga closely, by reading the manga volumes 17 + I would have seen/read the Kenshin story just as the mangaka intended—and that’s the most important thing to me. :)

They followed the manga yes, though there were changes. The Kyoto Arc is pretty close to the manga, IIRC. Some things played out differently in the earlier arcs, such as with Raijuuta.

People who were weaned on the series (or manga) instead tend to hate it since it's a completely different ending compared to the manga (and general resentment over not animating Jinchuu despite the actual costs and profit margin involved).

You can count me in on one of those who think like this. It was the ending that pissed me off more than anything. Watsuki gave Kenshin
a happy ending because of all the crap he put him through, especially thinking that Kaoru was killed.
At AX 02 Watsuki did say that he did like the OAVs story, as you said, however, he told the fans that they can decide the ending for themselves(basically which one they prefer, as many who attended didn't like the OAV ending), as he pretty much had nothing to do with the OAVs, other than okaying the character designs.

I personally think the OAV ending for the series is perfect. It's sad, but it's also a "happy" ending.

I'm of the sort that believes that sometimes, not all endings should be happy as well because the vast majority of the time, it just wouldn't work that way. Then again, a good happy ending works too. ^^

Seisouhen is fucking stupid. Should've done a 2 hour OVA on the jinchuu arc to finish the series instead of recapping and making up stupid shit that doesn't fit the characters.

Tsuiokuhen is amazingly well done. Must see, super fantastico, etc.

The movie is a horrible filler cash-in and should be avoided.

TV series, well, 1-27 is the Tokyo Arc and is pretty mediocre at times, but provides some vital backstory to the characters. 28-62 or 63 (whatever it is, I forget) is the kyoto arc and is pretty damn decent overall. After that is filler that could be used as a torture device.

Err he did a follow-up about Yahiko? I must've missed it. I know he's working on his current series called Busou Renkin.

I got pretty far in this series actually, I loved it, but stopped watching it for some reason. I have most of the episodes on dvd, I cannot remember where I got up to, Kenshin was learning some sort of final skill.

I've watched Samurai X and about 60 eps of the series, I've noticed some more OVA's have been released. What order should these all be watched in?

Yeah, it was called Yahiko no Sakabato. I'm unsure of the length of it, but I know at least it was a miniseries/side-story deal.

I asked that question and it got answered a few posts above yours. :p

1) Trust
2) Betrayal
3) Reflections

btw there's a director's cut OVA that merges Trust and Betrayal into a movie. You can just watch that and then Reflections.
