When is the next election for her position?

Here's my hope.
-- she rots in jail
-- one of her subordinates gives in and issues licenses while she is in absentia
-- she stays in contempt for lets say 2 years until the next election
-- she get re-elected by idiots
-- she continues to rot in jail
-- etc.

:)

I was thinking this same thing. I hope she refuses to comply and gets reelected.

I wonder how often Europeans are thankful that they sent so many of their crazies over here. It would be nice if there was another place they could go settle, Antarctica in another 200 years maybe? Or Mars in 500 years?

I feel bad for the deputy clerks. They're fucked no matter what.

The deputy clerks are forced to use the public defender. Because, you know, the Liberty Counsel who got them all into this fucking mess are only defending Davis.

That being said, given that Liberty Counsel's advice to Davis was "disobey a federal court order" I'm pretty sure they're in much better hands.

I like schadenfreude and all, but she is being martyred. The optics of someone being jailed for not being pro-gay is, uh... pretty horrid. It's exactly why the couples were not pushing for jail time.

There's a bureaucratic process involved in removing elected officials.
Because she's an elected official and in Kentucky that would require her to be impeached by the state government.
You cannot fire an elected official. You can impeach but it is uncertain if there is even an impeachment proceeding in KY for this.
she's elected. can't be fired. She can quit or there could potentially be a recall election (no idea on KY law on that one though). Other than that nothing can be done. Other than what just happened - held in contempt of court

oh, OK. I thought she was literally a window clerk

She's an elected official. The only option is to jail her until she complies.

Not really. She is jailed for not following the law, or listening to a judges order. She swore to uphold the law when she was elected, now she is picking and choosing what to uphold.

She's not being asked to be pro-gay, whatever that means.

She's getting jailed for being in contempt of court, not her beliefs.

She wasn't issuing marriage licenses to anyone.

She was jailed for not doing her legally assigned duty and for breaking the law. She didn't have to be pro-gay. She just had to do her job.

Ok, you could also just put me on your ignore list.

I haven't ignored anyone on GAF ever, don't plan on starting now.

Your post was very insensitive to people with ancestors that immigrated here due to religious persecution (from other religious groups). A lot of those groups are still some of the nicest people you could meet and were active in assisting the Underground Railroad and Abolitionist movements (Mennonites and Quakers). I think they were actually the first european origin groups to formally protest slavery in the west.

not that her supporters won't paint it like that... but surely a logical and sensible person doesn't believe this.

Judge Bunning pretty much guaranteed that the issue of marriage is going to remain in the conversation for the rest of this campaign. I'm surprised she got jail. The holy rollers are going to go into a persecution tizzy over this.

Logic and understanding of the law is something you'll be hard pressed to make someone who is willfully ignorant accept.

There will be tons of people claiming she was jailed for being anti-gay when it's actually for not doing her state ordered duty as an elected official. It ultimately becomes a double edged sword for those working in the office who have to handle her duties while she's in jail.

Judge says Deputy Clerks will go to jail too if they don't issue licenses

A federal judge is warning deputy clerks in Kentucky that they must issue marriage licenses to gay couples or face fines or jail.

U.S. District Judge David Bunning already jailed Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis for refusing to comply with his order. She was led out of the courtroom by U.S. marshals on Thursday.

The judge gave the deputy clerks time to go meet with public defenders and said the hearing will resume at 1:45 p.m.

I wouldn't say it's all that stupid. Insensitive, but not stupid. We're puritan in our roots and its effects can be seen today in our views on sex, violence and bootstraps economics.

I think it's fair to look at the Puritans in the north east and their reach in our culture still today. To me they were a pretty extreme religious culture. The mennonites and quakers in Pennsylvania were more loving.

You hope she doesn't change her mind or views and spends the rest of her life in jail instead of her realizing her mistakes or just doing her job?

That sounds like what a reasonable adult would hope for. Sounds more like an angsty/revenge fantasy.

If you turn any picture of this wretched cunt into black and white, she just looks like she's been plucked right out of one of those photos of segregation supporters from the 60s. Just has that look. Hair, clothes and all.

Correct and I myself took it to mean he meant the Puritans as well.

What if she has been a self hating lesbian this whole time and we find out she has a lover in prison?

Yup, that's what I'm talking about. They don't get that she can't be "fired", and that's not going to be brought up often by right-wing media, if ever.

And she thanked the judge.

I...dammit. My goddamn curiosity. I need to not follow those links.

Can you imagine if we had the internet leading up to the Civil War? During the reconstruction? During the Civil Rights Movement? I think we'd be seeing a mirror image of these comments.

Well she can't be fired. I don't think she's being jailed cause of her oh so holy beliefs but rather cause she's opposing the supreme court here.

I'm talking about optics. This was a big win for her and for anti gay marriage proponents in that regard. We're not talking about people who are known for logical thinking, they'll just digest this as Obama's atheist government jailing her for her religious beliefs.

Those people are not crazy at all, and my post was not directed at them. Thoughtful Christians that actually follow the teachings of Jesus are wonderful people and the world would be a much better place if there were more of them. Unfortunately, they are not the majority of practicing Christians in this country. The 'Christians' my post was directed at are hateful, exclusionary, and proud of being anti-intellectual. I feel no remorse at all in saying that this country would be a better place if they chose to live elsewhere.

Oh I agree. Now it's gonna be milked as the "persecuted martyr". But I'm not really sure how you can lay down consequences while avoiding that from happening in this instance.
